The original is better (as is Robert Mitchum, concordingly) but Scorsese's remake is almost right on par.

I liked the De Niro one i thought he played a amazing psycho, he's one of my favorite actors of all time. This movie was scary because it could happen.

The remake is fine, but doesn't touch the original, IMO.

It(the original) always got middle of the road reviews, and I thought it was a prime candidate for a remake. The music and Mitchum(who I thought was just doing a continuation of his character in Night of the Hunter) were the high points for me.

I don't consider anything a prime candidate for a remake.

[In April 2007, Newsweek selected Robert Mitchum's character as one of the ten best villains in cinema history. Cape Fear was also #36 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments for its famous scene where Max Cady attacks Sam's family.

I believe he's speaking of reviews contemporary with the film's release.

Wasn't mad about the remake but the original is one of my fave films of all time. Max's story of what he did to his wife is really chilling. I think Michum overall did a better job.

I did like the look of the remake where it looked a bit cartoony or hyper real (like the scene in the cinema or the fireworks part).

Deniros version of character seems to be a mix of Michum's characters from cape fear and Night of the Hunter (bible quoting and tattooed)
