I also don't understand calling Donnie Darko a sci-fi movie. Is it because a jet engine falls on their house? I don't get it.

I agree with urge that Darko would speak to a lot of people of a certain age and outlook. I think works of art- and I believe movies, even the most crassly commercial- can be called works of art- can be a deciding factor in helping someone make a realization, or come upon some truth that becomes important to them.

Donnie Darko is a very, very good movie, imo, and I can see how it would be a important to some people.

i dont think sci-fi drives the film, any more than Repo-Man or Slaughterhouse Five, but as soon as there is a hint of time travel - it's going to get associated with the genre.

i keep it in my sci-fi section - taking my lead from the film revview books that sort genre films by some pretty lose criteria.

(i just do it because it makes locating a lot easier)

Well you're lucky then. Around here I heard it constantly. In fact it was the sole reason why I never saw the movie for years. 99 times out of 100 when so many people are saying "It's the most amazing movie I've seen. OMG it changed my life," it's probably not quite that good. Don't believe me? They're making Spiderman 4 AND 5. I shouldn't have to elaborate any further than that.

I'm not talking about a movie making you take the leap from mainstream movies to more serious films. [Not to insinuate that I even remotely think that Donnie Darko would be put in the latter category anyways.] I'm talking about people saying that it changed their life. That Donnie Darko actually changed how they look at life and made them re-evaluate their own philosophies and attitudes. I mean, Donnie Darko was basically a Twilight Zone episode. I don't see the "depth" and "deep meaning" that people heap onto the film.

It's not sci-fi in terms of aliens bursting out of chests or laser guns going "PEW PEW PEW," but it's most definitely sci-fi; just set in modern times. If time travel doesn't fit into the broad genre of sci-fi, I don't know what does.

Personally, I love Donnie Darko. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and I think that it's just... Smart. It has some definite flaws that I've learned to get past (Drew Barrimore's acting, for example), and I thought that some of the predestination discussion could have gone a little farther than it did, but overall I love the film.

Incidentally, I never thought that the soundtrack shone over the rest of the movie. It's a brilliant soundtrack, to be sure, but I loved the writing and direction so much that it was never just the soundtrack. So I find it interesting that some people think that its popularity only comes from the soundtrack - Never considered it that way.

i think a long time ago i made an observation that i always saw Napoleon dynamite to be the 'simple cousin' of donnie darko.
both dealing with a guy who is out of step with everything around him, and the time travel bit.

been a while since i've seen DD but back when .. i remember finding a few more amusing similarities



as far as people having it change their philosophies - just take that for what it is ... young folks are impressionable ... 10 years from now they'll be saying the same thing because of some book on buddha they read.

i'd never let that stop me from seeing something on my own terms.

The worst horror movies I have ever seen was Children of the Corn 2-last!! You should know you can't touch Stephen King!! As for Donnie Darko, after you see it once, thats pretty much all I can take of that movie. It's kinda like the Sixth Sense, you already know what happens, so it's pointless to watch it more than once, ya know!! Hope that helps! Happy Slashing All !!
