I had watched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me first only because it was available and the series wasn't on DVD at the time. I absolutely loved this movie, though it gave me a much darker impression of the series. The series itself has more humor in it. Season One was very entertaining, Season Two (which is much longer) comes out tomorrow.
If you are planning on watching the whole series, I would watch Fire Walk with Me last because you may get more out of the story that way. If you start watching the series and don't like it, then just watch the movie instead. A note about the Season One DVD: it is missing the pilot episode. This first episode on the DVD will start with "previously on Twin Peaks". This is due to the fact that David Lynch sold the rights to just the pilot to a different company to market it as a stand alone movie in Europe. As of right now, there is no copy of this in United States except for bootlegs. What you can do is pull the screenplay for the pilot off of the internet (which is what I did) to find out what happened. |

As great and fun and quirky and odd as the series is, the Movie is the real artistic statement.
I loved the series and really thought the idea of a prequel was lame...until I saw it. Dark, unsettling and relentlessly inventive. Watch the series for the quirks and the fun, THEN watch the movie. It's one of Lynch's best.

Hmmm
Thanks for the replies everyone. I had the movie at home but just mailed it back to Netflix. I'll wait until I see the rest of the series first. :)
