black christmas and haute tension?

i'm homing in on these two movies that i haven't seen as possible new purchases but i was hoping for some final input from the experts. they seem to have two very confusing things in common; firstly, a large majority of you highly rate them as classics and must haves; secondly, the rest of you think they are woeful bags of shit. well what is it? great or awful, i don't want another last house on the left on my hands

The only thing I could say is that Black Christmas could suffer a little bit from dating but should still be a good, frightning experiance.

Consensus is tough to find on any movie. People simply dig different things. People also hate different things and sometimes the slightest thing can tick people off.

Haute Tension is pretty, but completely empty. I hate it.

Black Christmas
is best viewed as a historical document. A film that inspired so many imitators, but has not aged well. It has a few great elements and the last 15 minutes are excellent, but the rest is rather flat, despite the inventiveness of the filmmaking. This is one case where the imitators have done it better.

As for consensus? Never happen around here, there's always a bunch of haters no matter how brilliant a film may be. Notice how OMCDave bashes The Descent or BASSI hates A Clockwork Orange it goes on and on.

Hope you enjoy them, that's all that really matters, right? I'd absolutely rent before buying...still don't understand why anyone buys blind.
