Breaking the fourth wall can be really effective on the rare, reare occasion that it's done well and fits the movie, but here when the actor playing Tommy looks at the camera, it's as though he's saying "How the hell did I get stuck in this?". It's almost as though he realised how pathetic the joke was, and was apologizing to the audience.

Jason X took the same basic idea, but made it more subtle. They made it seem like it was to be taken seriously, which is why so many people think its crap. Its tounge was just as firmly planted in its cheek, but it didnt wink quite so much as "Jason Lives".
I do see your point...I guess it all comes down to a matter of opinion. I guess if I'm going to watch a Friday the 13th movie, my brain will be turned off, so I enjoy the "out there in front of me" rediculous humor more than 'X''s subtle rediculous humor.

Im sure that most any horror fan would enjoy at least one or two of the films in the series, because even if you dont like one installment you just need to wait for another sequel or two and it'll go in a whole new direction. Sometimes this is an improvement...other times it's not.

So what are everyone's favourite films in this infamous series? What were your favourite kills? Did you prefer the series when it tried to be somewhat serious, or once it got intentionally cheesy?

Personally, here's how I would rank the series from best to weakest:

Part III
Friday the 13th (Original)
Part II
Jason Goes to Hell
Part V: A New Beginning
Jason Takes Manhattan
Part IV: The Final Chapter

Jason X

Part VII: The New Blood
Part VI: Jason Lives

I really enjoyed all of them up until that first space. Jason X was decent and really fun in places, but not on par with the rest of the series. "New Blood" and "Jason Lives" were just garbage, though "Jason Lives" was by far the worst.

I know Jason Takes Manhattan gets alot of shit, but I thought it was alot of fun. It dropped most of the intentional comedy that was spawned by "Jason Lives", and despite its somewhat far-fetched plot it made a Hell of alot more sence than "The New Blood". It knew that the series was too far-gone to save, so it took that into account and didnt take itself to serious. Just serious enough to make a really fun little slasher flick, no more no less and not nearly as overthetop as "Jason Lives".

Note: I left Freddy vs Jason off the list because, to me, it was more of a Nightmare on Elm Street flick than a Friday the 13th installment. Jason was there of course, but it didnt really have the "feel" of F13. If I had to include it, it would probably go between "A New Beginning" and "Jason Takes Manhattan"

Thoughts?
Jason X was mos def the worst f13 i've ever seen!

The original, though they really can be considered two parts to one movie (ala Kill Bill)

I like slashers and giallo better than monster flicks.

The first five Friday the 13th films are slashers. The last five are monster films.
The way they made Friday the 13th part 5,it reminds me of a giallo.

You know, that's an interesting point.

The first 5 do have a kind of light giallo feel to them.

i love this series. It was a fun 80s cash cow that prolly hung around too long for alot of peoples liking, and thats fine with me, I'd rather it that way. Part 8 is one of my faves, at least it comes at it a little differently. Jason X is the only one I havent seen. I think the first one is put way too high on a pedestal and I also think it's nowhere near suspenseful enough to have the killer off-screen for most of the movie (if i want to watch a scary slasher flick ill watch black xmas). Of course you cant bag on the first one too much ,since it does have Bacon and without the first one thered be no other ones. I personally like this series a bit better than Nightmare on Elm St. although the premise of NOES allows for more creative kills, although they sometimes dont make alot of sense. Then again most "modern" horror movies don't.
