Puns, Predictable Irony, and other unfunny crap.

There is a commercial on the radio around these parts for i think Mobil On the run convenience stores where they are hawking Bengel Traders coffee.

Now, they start off on the wrong foot with me anyway, by having "Conversaitions" that are so natural like "Yes, I would love a Bengel trader's 20 oz regular coffee right now"... I fucking hate "I love PRODUCT NAME! Kids, lets go get a nice 32 oz resealable container of PRODUCT NAME at our local produce market!"

Anyway, the guy in the commerical is speed talking because he has been purchasing multiple BENGEL TRADER'S Coffee, (20 oz, of course, and at the end of the commercial there is an HILARIOUS little bit of irony where they suggest he drink decaf with his next cup (because he is hyper), and guess what?

(This is SOOO funny i could shoot myself)

He has been drinking decaf. Guffaw.

i hate that kind of spoon fed crap that apparently appeals to poeple in the bible belt over 50...

i also hate puns, especially when delivered by people who think they are funny./ It is the best way to suck the oxygen out of the room...

old men are the worst at puns ..

they usually make them to pretty young waitresses who have to smile and act like the old fart is the funniest, sexiest, nicest guy in the world to get that mouldy 2$ tip.

i am becoming an old guy .. i caught myself making an old guy pun once.
my only saving grace was that it wasnt to a waitress .. and i immediately said 'holy shit - i just made an old guy joke !'

dodged a bullet that time but a fear it wont be long now.

I worked with a guy about a year ago that was a horrible pun maker... The problem was that he was a nice guy, so you wanted to smack him for saying such STUPID "clever" things, but you felt bad for even bringing up that they were awful...

i worked with an older woman that did the same thing ...

problem is - i can laugh at an unfunny joke - not even to be polite - i just cant.
bosses dont like that .. i just stare blankly trying unsuccessfully to force a smile on my face... the kind you make when you have a stomach cramp.

so this woman .. yeah she was relentless... one after another ...like a machine .. and NOTHING was even remotely funny .. i felt sorry for her.

its the lack of cleverness.. the absolute obviousness of everything that kills me .. if its remotely smart in any way - even in its silliness i can find a chuckle ..

I completely agree. Its like watching the pairs of celebrities announcing awards on the oscars, MTV awards so on.... Taking one in the face on the hollywood "casting couch" has to be less humiliating than some of the shit those people say...

"I guess you can say our next announcer was 'Big' in the 80s. Tom Hanks..."
*akward clapping*

Probably the same reason i graon through kids shows. Even when I was a kid, i was too cynical for most kids shows...

i'm tough on kids shows...and i see a lot of them - i want to know what my kid is watching. every now and then something clever comes along (fairly odd parents rides the fence - it can be typical one second and have some fairly sophisticated humor the next)

in most cases the makers of kids shows see it as a throw away genre - "its kids - they wont know the difference".. but the smart ones do.

i'm happy and proud to say that my kid responds to the better shows .. he gets a lot of the jokes that are aimed a lit higher than his head.

the worst thing a kids show can do is try to be too hip for its own good.
when a show looks like it doesnt know how clever its being - thats when it works ..

the physical difference is subtle but speaks volumes ..

a little too much emphasis on a word here - a pause there... etc ..

its like a critic i read once said about the films of bill forsyth (local hero, Gregorys Girl) .. the films are funny because the characters have no idea that they are funny.

Exactly. I directed a kids in the hall sketch for a talent show my senior year of high school. One of the kids kept looking at the crowd and nodding as he did his joke and i fucking exploded at him backstage.... ''ITS NOT FUNNY, ITS STUPID."

I told him if he did it again, i was oging to replace him.... I cant stand that crap.. breaking the "3rd wall" is rarely funny. It is gold when it IS, but that is VERY rare. Trading Places is an example where it was funny.

for kids shows, i like Jimmy Neutron. it is smart, and they usually get their facts straight when they bring actual science into things. They also usually have just enough references to things that parents will get.
