Italian films: Half and half?

Question for all the Italian horror buffs:

Why is it that some Italian movies are half English and half Italian? For example, I was watching Deep Red tonight, and sometimes I'd have to read the subtitles because the actors were speaking in Italian. All of a sudden, sometimes mid-scene, they'd start speaking English.

I've noticed it in other films, too. Why is this?

I couldn't tell you but I love it in The Anitchrist, especially how the first bit has no subtitles just italian wailing.

It occurs when two different versions of the film are fused together, usually in a Director's Cut.

In a bid to release a definitive English-coherent version with all scenes intact, this might mean inserting sequences only ever shot for the Italian market - hence the subtitles, since it is too late to dub over.

Many films were released with different edits between Europe and the USA (Dawn of the Dead, for example), with sex and extreme violence often missing from American versions but different scenes included to compensate.

There is a sexier, more violent version of DotD floating around somewhere? Is it available Region 1?

Its on the 3 disc special edition they released, US cut, European cut, & the DC cut. For me i prefer the US cut. The European cuts out the helicopter decapitation scene.

I ask you again Captain, where will you go?
You can destroy my specimens but what about the millions that wait to greet you outside?
Do you really think you can blow the piss out of them?

I was using Dawn of the Dead as an example of differing versions between Europe & USA - there are quite a few edits of this film about, and I can't remember the pros and cons of each release (Google for a list), but (un?)fortunately there is apparently no sex in any one of them.

:)
