Everyone needs to read this link that was sent up above it's veryinteresting and will help understand this story. one thing that confuses me is that they try to make it seem like the original exoricist is based on this girl to, but it's not it's based on a boy who spent the night with a priest at least that's what the directors of the exorcist said.;) ;)

Wow, lots of interest about this film, and lots of points raised in earlier posts. My head is swimming but let me try to answer a few things....
THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE is a very good horror movie, but it is not "based" on a true story, despite a credit to that effect. The screenwriters got the idea for a "courtroom horror movie" from the case of Anneliese Michel, but they admit they fictionzlied their story, creating characters and adding stuff they heard about other cases of possession. THE EXORCIST is not based on a true story. William Peter Blatty told me that he read about the case of the possessed boy and thought of doing a non-fiction book "But I never wrote a word." Years later, when his career as a comic screenwriter was drying up, he decided to go back to that idea and create a novel, to prove that he could do serious dramatic work. He never pretended to be telling a true story, just that he got the idea from something he read in the newspapers (and subsequently researched). As to why THE EXORCIST seems funny to younger viewers, I can only say that only one scene ever amused me: when the doctor gives an injection to the unwilling Regan and she spits in his eye, yelling, "You fuckin' bastard!" Maybe the urinating on the floore scene too, but that is a nervous kind of laughter -- the kind you make when you're embarassed (kind of like the characters are embarrased in the film). I think there's now a tendancy not to sit through the movie as a movie but as an endurance test or a rite of passage ("every body says it's scary, but it sure as hell didn't scare me because I'm so damn cool!"). As for the complaints about the PG-13 rating given to EMILY ROSE, I wish horror fans would worry more about how scary the film is rather than how gorey it is. Yeah it's a bummer when good stuff gets cut to earn a more marketable rating, but EMILY ROSE is not about projectile vomit, spining heads, or crucifix masburation. It's about a terrible, agonzing, miserable fate visited on a helpless young woman and about how the efforts to save her failed, and it's about trying to make some sense of the tragedy. That's more than enough to make it effective. By the way, it is not giving the ending away to say that Emily died. The film shows us this in the very first sequence. The movie is actually structured as a courtroom drama, with the events unfolding in flashback, which gives the filmmakers leeway to present both sides of the story and leave it up to the audience to decide.
