There are still mountain men to this day!
There was a case of Mountain men who turned blue in colour, due to interbreeding which spread a blood disorder! There have even been cases both in Europe and the USA of Feral families who did indeed turn to cannibalism! … Whether those newspaper clipping are real how ever I don’t know, I’m not sure if anyone became as mutated by interbreeding as they do in these kind of movies no doubt it is "reality" exaggerated for cinematic effect!

The clips were fake. The story is fake. The movie is fiction. Of course there are people that live in the hills/mountains, some even inbreed, and a few might even be cannibals, but this movie wasn't based on anything factual.
