Exclamation DVD Rot.

no it's not the title for a new gore film,

after seeing Vamps new thread asking for help with a scene in Silence of The lambs, I thought I'd check out the film, to see what he's talking about.

anyway, chucked the disk in my dvd rom, and it starts clicking, scene selection wont load and dvd software freezes up. I closed it down and ejected the disk.

the 1st disk is well and truly fucked now, it's all cracked from the centre outwards. I checked the 2nd disk and there's no cracks, but the surface has lost it's shine and it's completely sticky to the touch. The 1st disk is also sticky.

I'm assuming this is disk rot, that I've read about, where the glue sticking the layers together 'rots' the disk.

The version of Silence of The Lambs is the 2 disk Special Edition version (see below), in the cardboard sleve, produced by MGM. Not sure of the date it was made because I bought it a long time after the film was released.

Maybe if any of you guys have this version, would check to see if yours is ok.

yeah.

would be a good idea for all the members here with the faulty disks to post here, to get an idea of numbers.

Unless the problems restricted to UK released versions of the Disk.

Wow. I have never heard of DVD rot before ... and, fortunately, this has not yet happened to me. I know that at the Blockbuster my wife manages, she has a bottle of some sort of DVD restoration fluid, which does things like eliminate small scratches and basically resurface the disk. Unless the damage is severe, which it sounds like ShankS disc is totally fucked.

I have had some bad experiences with DVD players, though. My wife would bring home a brand new DVD, not even released to the public yet, and we would put it in one of our DVD players and it would begin to freeze up halfway through the film. This player does it with practically every DVD we have, now. It sucks ... but ... Players can always be replaced easily. It's hard to replace a collection that has fallen victim to rot.
