I've actually seen an episode of Ghost Adventures addressing that very question. He gave a very good answer but I can't remember all of it. Most I remember is it reduces glares and chances of catching light from the sun and mistaking it for a orb or something in the photographs. Sounds reasonable to me. Like one of reasons it's not advised to go ghosting in the cold is because if you were to catch a mass of something on film, you can't rule out the possibility of it being your breath.
I'm not one for reality tv myself usually. There are some ghost hunter shows (one I think being the original) where they're just so fucking corny I can't help but laugh. They just jump at EVERYTHING.
