Watching horror movies can have a bad effect on people who aren't used to such things. Many can't stand gore while others can't watch something that has to do with ghosts. Most of the time it can have a deep impact on children.
To me the pros are that I can laugh about how stupid some of the characters are. It's also quite interesting how the creators try to play with our fear.

I admit, I was the biggest pussy when I was a kid. I didn't hate horror but more of respected it like prey does a predator. I kept my distance from it whenever possible, but you can't avoid it sometimes. Until I learned to accept horror as a part of life, I scared easily and (although I still enjoyed my lycanthropes) remember being jumpy of the least scariest things like Buffy and CSI. My parents and my friends were the culprits of most of these, and now a days it seems I'm the only one who appreciates a good murder anymore.
I think the point I'm trying to get to is that horror is very influential, it's very honest, and it's blunt. This is life, this is what it looks like. Either fear it or embrace it. There will be pain. There will be death. That's part of life. Make the right decisions and you'll survive. That is horror to me. Your parents telling you ''that's life'' when you bitch about anything.
