What's really scary anymore?
Lately I've been finding a lot of the things that were frightening to me when I was young and rewatching them. The original Chainsaw, Last House On the Left, that screwed up X-files with the inbreeders, etc etc. and none of it seems remotely as shocking or disturbing as I remember it. That's to be expected I guess, I'm older and many of the things that were unthinkable back in the day are cliches now. My girlfriend upon watching Chainsaw after I built it up as the scariest mainstream movie I could think of was unimpressed. She said it reminded her of House of 1000 Corpses. Thanks Rob.
So anyway I guess what I want to hear is suggestions of things that will give me that same feeling I had when I was 12 and was more scared of monsters and psychos than power mad politicians and religious fanatics. Any suggestions? |
I dunno, to me, possesion scare sthe eveliving shit out of me. (The Exorcist, Amityville 2, Evil Dead). It just really digs deep for me. on the other hand, I'm only 16, so I can't relate as well to the "When I was 12..." thing.
|
I agree, not much scares me anymore.
Prince of darkness gave me wierd lil feeling after i watched it, but that was when i was 14. I still think its a really interesting, unsettling movie. While others might disagree, i dunno - movies work differently on different people. Black christmas also bugged me out. You would think its a typical slasher blah blah, but i dunno - it was very eerie and slow paced. Definitly a good movie to watch late at night. |
Maniac will be the movie that I forever will remember as scaring me to the core
Jacobs Ladder will forever be the movie that I cannot ever watch again as long as I live if I want to remain sane(well-relatively) Excorcist makes all the demons possessing me very nervous,so yet another movie I should not watch.I will not even attempt to watch this new one"emily rose"thingy...nope,not for me So,maybe you need to find out what you fear and then concentrate on watching those-from the classics to the new. |
Jacobs Ladder is one of those movies I keep intending to see but always forget when I'm trying to think of something to rent. Thanks for the suggestion.
I should be clear I guess by what I mean. I've seen many films that have seriously scared me. Dancer in the Dark with Bjork is one of the most screwed up things I've ever seen. But it's hardly "horror". And I'm still working up the fortitude to find a copy of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer because I know it'll leave a bad taste for weeks. Possesion seems to scare a lot of people. I've never focused on it myself but I understand the sentiment. The thing I always loved about the Evil Dead films is how Ash accepts the situation and then does everything to survive. In Evil Dead II when he's being chased through the house and crawls inside the wall to escape.... that's intense. |
Nothing really scares me...couple things give me a eerie feeling but that's about it.
|
I've been married for over twenty years and lived with my mother-in-law for fifteen of them......what the fuck could possibly scare me now.
|
Movies don't scare me so much anymore, though it is ridiculously easy to make me jump...lol....but obviously that is different kind of thing. On occasion a film can still make me uneasy. But for me, the movies that impacted me the most when I was younger and filled me with that complete sense of dread that I think you are speaking of, still do to a lesser extent. But, for instance, the original TCM and The Exorcist both still disturb the hell out of me.
And Jacob's Ladder is an excellent film. |
When I was little the intro to Tales from the Crypt scared the hell outta me... I just never liked that Crypt Keeper.
The first Child's Play got to me too... maybe its just the whole puppet thing in general, I just didn't like it. |

Jacobs ladder is a ver frightening film.
And if you really want to be scared, have children growing up in this fucked up world. And if that doesnt do it for ya, come over to my place. I can take ya up to the loft in the barn and really give ya a fright. We have a veal slaughter house just east of me. I know someone who works there. I can get us a tour.;) |
Demonic Possesion scares me to the core, because you can never, ever know who its going to happen to next. If it exists, that is.
|
Sometimes I think I'm now immune to being frightened by movies (which kinda makes me sad, since that's why I became a horror buff to begin with).
Then I'm watching TV at 2:00 am and the Shining comes on, and pretty soon I'm looking over my shoulder and sleeping with the light on. I think it's more about HOW I watch movies now, more than the movies themselves. I can't imagine ever being scared in a movie theater, surrounded by noisy people. All of my horror watching is at home, and often alone. -AiV |

Wait a minute....are we talking strictly about movies or stuff that scares you period? |

Car crashes too. At least I drive but the idea that I'm going to be mangled on the highway is always in the back of my mind. It's not the death I fear so much as the dismemberment. |
Snakes
...and I think it's COMPLETELY Freudian.:D |
You don't have to be afraid of the snake, baby. For only you can TAME the snake!
|
And please, try to take no offence... I am afraid of Christians.
But yeah, that Emily Rose movie looks pretty scary. I'll go see it, get scared out of my teeth, take a xanax, then discuss the movie with either my brother or Zwoti or both... not at the same time, obviously. Love to discuss with a certain Bloodrayne, but she hasn't answered my pm. ;) ;) :D |

Okay...Answering PM now:D |
Mushrooms and trains have always been pretty scary.
|
Honestly, I find children with missing teeth is creepy as hell. Like, when a little kid loses his front 2 baby teeth and he gives that big grin.... I keep imagining something like a snake tongue coming through the gap, just makes me shudder.
|
Biggest fear I have is of loss.

I had a very vivid dream when I was 15 or so, that I burned alive inside a car. I have major issues with cars and I am terrified of fire. Yet somehow fascinated by it at the same time. Funny how that works.
Also on a far lesser scale: spiders, clowns and dentists (actually not sure if this one is on a lesser scale or not...lol). |
Apparently people are more afraid of the dentist than death itself so you're definately not alone there.
|
If we're just talking about general things that scare us here, I'm absolutely terrified of centipedes. Those things are horrible.
As far as movies go, horror never really frightens me anymore. What I find more disturbing these days is the nihilist cinema of filmmakers such as Gaspar Noe and Michael Haneke (Irreversible, Funny Games, The Piano Teacher, etc.) It's just distressing witnessing all the truly terrible things people will do to one another. |

You shouldn't be afraid of my adopted faith-Lutheran.(although I haven't been to church in so long,I wonder if our membership expired-lol) We don't preach,we don't shove God down your thoat and we don't care if you're an alien from outer space, basically Lutheran's help when needed and try to be good to the earth and all it's creatures without judgement.(I personally have nothing bad to say about what anyone believes in,except when it goes to the extreme and harms them or others) Now,the amount of people that actually put this into practice.....well,humans are fallible. So,I'll add that to the list of things that scare me....Hard-core fanatics of ANY religion. |

Jenna said something that made me think again, and I now realize my other "scary" category, although it's just a sick-to-my- stomach disturbed feeling, not a scared one.
I don't know how to exactly categorize this, but here's two examples: - Texas Chasinsaw Massacre (1974) - Last House on the Left It's the 70's realistic-like movies where it's a group just absolutely torturing a group of innocents. L.H.O.T.L really disturbed me a lot. |
I can't think of any horror movies that still scare me. On the other hand I am terrified of monkies. Terrible terrible little things...
|
Oh, I've got a weird one.
Dragonflies scare the shit out of me. People constantly try to explain that they dont bite, sting, or hurt you at all, but they are the scariest animal I have ever seen. My mother feels the need to decorate our porch with a dragonfly theme. Even fake ones scare me. I fully expect someone to post a huge pic of a dragonfly after this, which will probably scar me for life. Them suckers are scary. |
the thing that still freaks me out is scenes in movies like 'evil dead 2'when annie's boyfriend suddenley appears and say's "we are the thing's that were and shall be again!"or in 'the shining 'when the o'grady twins are standing at the end of the hall holding hands.or when micheal meyers is watching jamie lee curtis from the backyard, behind the blowing sheets,in halloween.i could go on and on,but,i'll shut up.wait was i only supposed to talk about only one movie?sorry.

This is the only thing that scares me.

Spontaneous Human Combustion scares the shit out of me.
I’ve read countless horror novels over the years, and can read about anything at all, even true life mysterious stuff like UFO’s, Poltergeists, Demonic Possession, true crime stuff, but when it comes to SHC, I just hate it… And anyone who thinks that phenomenon has been scientifically proved to be no longer a mystery, the wick effect and all that crap, then you had better read more on this subject… for one thing, the wick effect, when it is Made to work, takes literally hours, whereas SHC can happen in minutes…. One minute you are alive and smiling, next minute you are burning to death, from the inside. In less than 10 minutes, you are dead, nothing but dust, and that can happen at any time, to any body, in any place, with or without others around… oh, and by the way, if it does ever happen to you, do Not jump in the shower… water fuels the flames!!! |
Quote:
Never heard about that. Ever.    |

Also if SHC is real, I doubt very much there are flames involved. |

Wolf Creek
'Wolf Creek' (new movie set in the Australian outback) is the only thing I've seen in a long time which actually shocked me.
It makes Texas Chainsaw look moralistic! Some of the Asian horror Ring, Grudge etc are actually scary in a kind of haunt you after the film is over kinda way theres a top twenty list of scariest ever at rawfear.net which is pretty spot on (and some good comedy/worst ever charts too) |
