It's like the Ian Malcolm Effect. One small event (an off topic post) creates a chain reaction. Picture a gentle slope. You put a drop of water on it. The slope is the theory. As the water progresses (more people following from the first off topic post), the slope gets steeper and steeper, (the thread going further and further away from the topic, faster.)
