hmm...here's more news from Warner Premiere direct-to-video desk...

May 12, 2007

A couple of months back, Warner Premiere – the WB’s new direct to video sequel arm; the crowd prepping such sequels as “Space Jam 2”, “Beetlejuice 2” and “The Lost Boys 2 : The Tribe” – have been toying with the idea of introducing 80s adventure icons “The Goonies” to Blockbuster stores, in the form of a direct-to-video sequel.

Richard Donner, director of the original film and someone whose been doing his hardest to get a theatrical sequel to the film up for years, tells IESB.net that the direct-to-video rumours are true; and he doesn’t sound too happy about it.

“There’s talk that Warners are doing a Goonies film - for 12 days - just to go right to DVD”, Donner tells the site, adding that they’ll probably spent about eleven dollars on making the movie.

The filmmaker says that the only reason they’re able to now do a direct-to-video sequel – one without his blessing – is because “Twenty years is up, the rights have run out”. (What that means is that so are the rights on the "Gremlins" series... so you can expect a direct-to-video sequel to that any day now, too).

Donner had been trying to convince Warner Bros to make a sequel - a pricier sequel, one that would hit theatres - for several years. In 2002, he said "We’re trying desperately. We’re just trying to get Warner Bros., who owns it, to say yes.”

Donner's sequel would've reunited the original cast, which included Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and others, with a new bunch of suburban kids, Donner said.

“The new group is called the Groonies, because they happen to live in a town where [Data], the Chinese kid, lives … and he’s got an electronics repair shop and all the kids hang out at his shop. He has this Chinese accent and he calls the Goonies the Groonies, and so the new kids call themselves the Groonies, until they get into a situation where the old Goonies have to save the new Groonies, or vice versa.”

God knows what the current sequel will be...

Wow, I don't know what to say to this......this just keeps getting worse. And I loved The Goonies when I was a kid.....:( What the hell are they thinking? I just wouldn't think this would pull THAT much money in for them, I would think most people would be as disgusted as I am...maybe not....

I can't believe this either, and I don't think it will be any good. The Lost Boys is one of my all time favs and this is a slap in the face to the original I think.

Warner has lost its marbles...most of these direct-to-DVD sequels are gonna be low-budget stuff with lesser known directors involved. Unless and until it boasts of some fabulous performances, I dont see any money generated from any of these.

The Goonies II, Lost Boys 2, Beetlejuice 2...and Space Jam II??

c'mon gimme a break.

Why WOULDN'T Hollywood force this crap down our throats?
They spend alot of money and audience polling for these things, it doesn't just come out of their butt ( as much as we all like to believe:D )

If everybody would stop going to sequels and prequels,etc,etc-the studios would be forced to seek out original screenplays.

It's our own damn fault:D

In a way, yes I agree.

But then most of the original stuff spewed out of the Hollywood factories has pretty much sucked since the early 90s, so audiences have been basically forced to go to sequels, prequels, remakes etc. They would rather watch em than a crappily scripted and paced "original" movie.

For e.g., DotD remake, TCM remake...heck even Hellraiser's latest sequel beats Uwe Boll's offerings, or the latest "John Carpenter/ Wes Craven Presents"...which they call "original".

They keep all the original screenplay writers chained up in a dark underground place.

*whip crack* 'We Will Break You' (russian accent) :D

lmao...

You know what...back when James Cameron announced Alien 5 with Ridley Scott as director, and John McTiernan announced Predator 3 with both Danny Glover and Arnie together...I was excited as hell. Both movies would have been pure class...

but then...Fox had to put its foot down. Being the major studio that owned both franchises, how could they let the legends of Hollywood trample over their ego?

They went ahead and made AvP, and buried both Alien and Predator franchises. Thats one decision I will NEVER forgive Fox for. Damn Hollywood studios to hell!
