The Departed was alright for a remake ;) ... 12 Angry Men gets my support, as does Blade Runner. As does Bonnie and Clyde, Close Encounters, Glengarry Glen Ross, Fargo, Lawrence of Arabia, North by Northwest, Raging Bull, Roshomon, Seven Samurai, and This is Spinal Tap.

...These films didn't hit as some of the best, but (except for Departed) I enjoyed them, and/or found them touching, and/or appreciated many of their technical accomplishments (including Departed). So I don't neg these:
...
The Departed - I didn't care for this film. It was finely shot and acted, but I didn't care for the story and characters. I don't recall being thrilled with the suspense, intrigue, action, but maybe I was too tired. Anyway, I'm Negging it.
V, that was a typo. I meant to type, "Anyway, I'm not Negging it."

I strongly support these films:
Groundhog Day - Man repeats the same day in a time loop until he understands what's important & lasting; a beautiful, smart, existential, funny film. American Film Institute voted 8th Best Fantasy Film All-time.
Yellow Submarine - mind blowing existential film, with amazing psychedelic animation, sci-fi symbolism on evil, fear, knowledge, psychology and of course LOVE; Beatles & original music. A moving experience.
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - a truely spectacular sci-fi film where two lazy best friends go through death, Hell, challenge the Grim Reaper, not to a a game of chess (ode to The Seventh Seal), but to games of Battleship, Clue, vibration football and Twister, then go to Heaven, meet God and Einstien, go back to Earth and save their fiancées from evil Bill & Ted robots, where they learn "We've been to the past. We've been to the future. We've been all around the afterlife. The best place to be, is here. The best time to be, is now." Amazing visual inventions & special effects, a great mix of high & low brow humor, very touching. Has to be seen to be believed. Roger Ebert wrote, " "It's the kind of movie where you start out snickering in spite of yourself, and end up actually admiring the originality that went into creating this hallucinatory slapstick."
Gandhi - the story of how Gandhi became and developed the peaceful protest of non-resistence (later used by Martin Luther King) to free India from British colonial rule. Nominated Best Picture.
Annie Hall - immensely engaging & funny film with excellent pacing. Hard film to describe. Won Best Picture.
Broadcast News - beautifully written story of conflicts between attraction, friendship and compatibility. Nominated Best Picture.
Crash - Well crafted film where acts of coldness, harshness, racism lead to more acts of harm & death; and each act of kindness and love leads directly peace, resolution, love & life. Won Best Picture.
Dances With Wolves - beautiful big screen film of man leaving the absurdities, chaos & violence of Western like during Civil War and finding the loveliness of living within a Sioux tribe & nature. Won Best Picture.
I support these films into the 100:
Music Man
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Robert Wise)
THE DEER HUNTER
When Harry Met Sally

Is it too late to add something? I watched THE TRAIN (1965) this morning and was reminded how good it is. Story, acting, photography and by implication directing, all top-notch. Especially the photography. Since several of my nominations have been negated I'd like to toss this into the fray. Should have nominated it the first time, just didn't think of it.

1. Black Swan -- Although I truly consider this a horror film, Arnofsky and Co. did a great job marketing this as non-horror so it would get attention at the Oscars -- so much so that even horror fans believe it. A modern masterpiece in psychological storytelling. Heartbreaking and distressing.
2. Monty Python & The Holy Grail -- No argument is really necessary. If you love it, you love it, and if you don't, you never will. But for a comedy, this film has the most amazingly detailed sets and costumes, and feels extremely gritty for being off-the-wall British slapstick. This film has no peers.
3. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover -- This film breaks too many rules for most folks, and I wouldn't want to watch it with my mom. But every time I do watch it, I'm left gut-punched for a couple days.
4. The Deer Hunter -- Incredible cast, moving, heartbreaking, epic. A truly impactful drama that is oh so human.
5. Fargo -- I would be fine with any number of Coen Brothers films, but one of them really needs to make the list. I chose O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but that film is a bit niche for a broad range of voters. Fargo has been cherished by quite a few, including myself, and has an endless number of memorable moments. The Coen Bros know how to define and develop unique, but still believable, characters. I personally think The Big Lebowski is a better example of that, but Fargo is probably more respected in a general sense, and a good choice if the Bros only get one.
I'll back these.

Adding those in bold (strong approvals) in my post above, we are now at 67 films. Still need 33 more.
Can I have a say in the films which are remaining? If no one objects, that is.

Certainly.
How do you want to proceed to select 33 more? Would you like us to go ahead and support films for the full list (ones we haven't supported already?)?

Review the ones from the 2-vote and 1-vote section which have nominal support and/or no support so far, then rummage through the ones from the backburner.
Will post the lists once I get the approval from more members to put my inputs into the remaining films.

Be impartial, and weigh each film's pros and cons carefully before extending your support for them.
I expect to find at least 20 more from this section, because we won't have much to go through with from the remainder, because the films in the backburner section are the ones with the most negations.
This is a call for fresh voting from everyone, so PLEASE don't be hasty or quick before reaching your decision. Our final 100 has reached a certain level of quality with the 63 chosen ones till now, so let's maintain the quality with the remaining 37 selections.

I'm not really clear about the fate of 'backburner' films. Although, as you say, some of them have the most negations, they also have the most initial votes, and are most likely to get more additional supportive votes when looking comparatively at the 'big list'.
As a fake example, maybe Shawshank Redemption got 3 negs, but had 2 initial support votes, and an additional 1 vote during discussion, for a total of +0.
If we 19-some folks look at all those +1 films, four people who haven't chimed in on Shawshank may say Shank is better than most of the '+1 films', and thus make it a +4 film.
For that reason, would you list the backburner films that have not made it into the Top 100 films?
_____V_____

For that reason, would you list the backburner films that have not made it into the Top 100 films?
Actually, the films in the backburner are the ones which received the most objections when we started the debate.
I'd say the films with any/all support in the 1-nomination list get precedence here. Instead of making things more complicated by adding those in the backburner, let's finish completely with the 1-nominations. Once we finish rustling through this list, we shall tackle all the remaining films, including the ones in the backburner.
There are still 37 films (+25 Honorable Mentions) needed, so we need at least 20-25 out of this present lot. The backburner films can fill any/few slots remaining.

Due to lack of interest/voters/supporters, I'll have to close this compilation.
No choice.

Thank you for your work on it V. I really enjoyed participating. I thought it was a great idea. It's obvious to me our HDC members know a great deal about films of all genres. Maybe it's timing. Maybe more a Winter event.

Sometimes it's not even interest, for instance I don't really see a jumping off point for a lot of discussion you know? When somebody brings up a movie I can discuss its merits or flaws but when I'm staring at a list of 50 films that I haven't supported directly or opposed there's not much for me to talk about. Maybe if you do start this back up we can break down the list and discuss a few movies at a time? I don't know, good stuff either way.

These are the films which have been tossed into the backburner because of strong negations during initial discussions. Number beside them indicates initial votes that they had garnered during the Master List compilation.
Once Upon a Time in the West - 4
The Matrix - 4
Back To The Future - 3
Die Hard - 3
Edward Scissorhands - 3
Pulp Fiction - 3
The Terminator - 3
Titanic - 3
Twelve Monkeys - 3
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 2
Gravity - 2
Independence Day - 2
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - 2
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - 2
I had initially kept this batch for a final debate to fill any remaining spots in the final 100, after we had rummaged through the 1-vote films. But let's have a discussion on all of them, in case any of them makes a case for itself over and above the 1-vote films.

I don't think we should over-empower a negative post.
Including a film with 1 vote (say "Scum"), and eliminating a film with 4 votes (say "The Matrix") doesn't make much sense.
Plus, I remember some were posts like "ya, I don't think that's one of the best". Doesn't mean they think that the film with 4 votes is worse than the one with 1 vote.
Just looking at these backburner films: (don't care) means not negging the film, I just don't care about it.
The Matrix - 4 (I think it's definitely one of the best films all-time)
Edward Scissorhands - 3 (I think it's definitely one of the best films all-time)
Pulp Fiction - 3 (I think it's definitely one of the 100 best films all-time)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 2 (very good film)
Twelve Monkeys - 3 (good film)
Die Hard - 3 (good film)
The Terminator - 3 (good film)
Titanic - 3 (good film)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - 2 (good film, don't care)
Once Upon a Time in the West - 4 (don't care)
Back To The Future - 3 (don't care)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - 2 (This is the original, entertaining, don't care)
Gravity - 2 (don't care)
Independence Day - 2 (entertaining, don't care)
