Creepers: 3 (For those that are saying they haven't seen it, thought I would point out its the Argento classic better known as Phenomena.)

Indeed. I thought more people would have seen this Argento classic by now. Not to mention, Jennifer Connelly's first film too. Couldn't find a bigger pic for the Phenomena named posters/DVD covers on Amazon to hotlink.

Keeping the ratings open for Phenomena/Creepers for the next 24 hours, just in case.

Scare-O-Meter scores (out of 5)

Hellraiser (based on 8 ratings) - 3.4
Creepers/Phenomena (for now) - Insufficient Data
From Beyond (based on 5 ratings) - 2.8

The two gorefests stack up well in the rankings, while Argento's underrated gem awaits more ratings.

All 3 films are added to the opening post, but ratings are still open for Phenomena/Creepers.

There was some decent casting- can't think of anyone better to play the father than Jason Robards and Jonathan Pryce was great... but the whole thing was so damn CLEAN. It was a competant adaptation, but in the hands of a superior director, it could have really been something. Quite out of character for me, I'd like to see this remade.)

My vote was for the original - but keep in mind that we can't all be scared by the same stuff :) In general (but definitely with exceptions), Asian Horror really doesn't work for me as "scary movies", but I enjoy some of them anyway for the good movies that they are. My votes in this thread are only for the spookiness, not for the quality :)

You should really watch Pet Sematary. In my opinion, it is one of the best Stephen King movies ever made. It features some terrific performances (in fact, I do not even know who do point out because all the acting was excellent). It has a very interesting story, which is very well-directed. Additionally, it has an excellent score. It is an all-around amazing film. If I had to say, then I would say it was my second favorite Stephen King film after The Shining. Anyway, you definitely need to see this one (I am assuming by not rating it that you have not seen it).

I agree! And it's especially a very effective movie because you really feel for the characters, just like when you read the book. I wasn't that old yet when I first read/watched it (around the same time), and I had absolutely no maternal instincts yet at the time, but I could really sense the father's pain in a very disturbing way.

Thanks, Mett and Kan! You know, I've been meaning to see Pet Sematary for a long, long time. Even my older sister told me it was a really good movie. I may just have to check it out tonight on Amazon Prime.

What's especially cool is I know nothing about it. Only thing I know that happens in the movie, is I heard a cat comes back to life. I love seeing movies when I know nothing about them. The film experience goes into another realm when you know nothing about film, don't you think?

In fact, every blue moon, I'll drag a friend to the theatre & pick a film we know nothing about for that extra experience.

"The Scene" in When a Stranger Calls is very well done. Even though I knew about it, I still thought it was scary. But the rest of the movie is a wash out. Too bad the producer didn't make more of it.

The official trailer for Alice, Sweet Alice is really funny (I think) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5QEAH35vM4 . Interesting, on RT, critics liked it 80%, but the general public (6,994 votes) didn't (57%).

I will mention, while I do not consider the latter two films scary, I do consider them very good. The Blob is an excellent film with Mcqueen. One of my favorite sci-fi films (that also fall under horror) from the 50s. Curse of Frankenstein I regard as a masterpiece. In my opinion, it is the best Hammer film ever made. There are many great questions asked here and it is interesting to see the evolving relationship between Paul and Frankenstein. Cushing and Lee both delivered excellent performances, but I think Cushing really shines in this one. I would actually put this in my top 20 horror movies of all-time. Anyway, both these films (but especially Curse of Frankenstein) are great films, even if not scary, in my opinion.

Boy, I tell ya, I looked at the Xtro video box at the video store 20 times, always just inches from renting it. I thought it would be interesting to read what Roger Ebert thought of it in 1982. It's rather funny. Here's what he said.

http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/movie/movie_poster/xtro-1983/large_vUu9vIF2IQLwZA9hnUHark0tmq9.jpg

Roger Ebert May 31, 1983

"Xtro" is an ugly, mean-spirited and despairing thriller that left me thoroughly depressed. Why was this movie made? What vision filled the filmmakers with a desire to share this work with an audience? I am not expecting a great movie when I walk in to see something named "Xtro," but I do hope the movie will contain some humor, or style, or excitement. "Xtro" is the work of incompetent cynics.

It's a British film, opening with a spaceship taking away a little boy's father. Three years later, the lad still has nightmares about it. Now his Mummy lives with another man, and the kid plays with his pet snake. Then the aliens visit again, dumping one of their creatures by the side of a road. The creature is one of those standard special effects monsters, made out of plastic, slime, teeth and moans.

Through a process that the movie makes complicated without making interesting, this creature has the ability to attack humans and turn them into things that look like people but aren't. One of the creatures is the little boy's "Daddy," who figure's in one of the most uncomfortable dinner-party scenes ever put on film.

The movie settles into a curious pattern. The scenes of everyday events are done as a sort of bitter, understated British slice of life. They alternate with the special effects scenes, which are heavy on teeth, slime, pulsating eggs and things that bite you in the face.

There are fugitive moments of tenderness, as the little boy plays with his pet snake, Harry, but this idyll ends when Daddy eats Harry's eggs. There also are moments that fly in the face of reason. In one of them, the mother turns back her son's covers to find he is totally covered with blood. A doctor is called, but no wound is found. Next morning at breakfast, the boyfriend says it's time for the kid to go to school. "But what about last night?" asks the mother, not unreasonably. "Poof -- forget about it," says the boyfriend.

Most exploitation movies are bad, but not necessarily painful to watch. They may be incompetent, they may be predictable, they may be badly acted or awkwardly directed, but at some level the filmmakers are enjoying themselves and at least trying to entertain an audience. "Xtro" is an exception, a completely depressing, nihilistic film, an exercise in sadness.

At the theater where I saw it, "Xtro" was on a double bill with "Tootsie." Why? Possibly because a booker thought the combo of a third-run hit comedy and a first-run thriller might attract audiences. On a Sunday afternoon, the audiences that turned up for "Tootsie" were rather nonplused by "Xtro's" pulsating slime and bloody little kids. It's movies like this that give movies a bad name.

Double feature with Tootsie! lol. I confess I don't like nihilistic anything. He doesn't make it sound very inviting.

Anyway, I have to see Fire In the Sky; it's a hole in my cultural awareness. No scary ratings from me on these.

That's true in comparison to most big critics. That's why I knew it would be funny. Ebert is the guy you want to review a "Terms of Endearment" important drama. Ebert gave Terminator zero stars... he had his mental blocks of appreciation. I'd read Gene Siskel for an action or horror film review.

Actually, I found the "At the Movies" Siskel & Ebert 1983 video review of Xtro.

I do not agree with that because there were many horror films that other critics denounced that Ebert defended including Halloween (1978) and The Last House on the Left. I actually really enjoyed reading his reviews on many films (including horror). Not that I always agreed. He did launch a crusade against slashers though.

Yes, I know that's is true, having read (and seen) hundreds of his reviews (we received the daily Sun-times at home, and watched 'At the Movies' & 'Siskel & Ebert as a family). He was a complex mix, like all real people. I think it was just trying to conveyed that Horror movies were obviously not his favorite types of films. He was a complex mix, like all real people. I think it was just trying to conveyed that Horror movies were obviously not his favorite types of films. He certainly knew how to appreciate films whether he liked them or not.

That is certainly true.

I, personally, would not say it "sucked". I would not say it was good either. To me, it was pure entertainment. It seemed like a bad ripoff of the Descent, but the strange thing is that, if I remember correctly, they both came out around the same time. To be honest, I did not know it was that known. I just picked it up from a pawn shop for a couple bucks (or so) a couple years ago with the thought that I would just watch it to see what it was. At the time, I did not know anything about The Descent, which I saw a few months to a year ago (from my perspective today). Speaking of which, I really enjoyed The Descent, it was a real masterpiece, in my opinion. One of the twenty best horror movies of the past decade and it had a surprising beginning AND ending. I did have trouble keeping track of the characters, they kind of looked pretty similar to me. Anyway, The Descent was a great movie all-around, while The Cave was merely so-so, in my opinion.

SPOILER ALERT:
In the version I have, the main character is stuck in the cave at the end and you can hear all sorts of frightful noises all around her. I've heard various interpretations of this ending, but that's what you see on screen.

Also, I watched about half of Inside today before I had to go to work. Love it, so far. I got the subbed version, but just for the record, I don't watched the dubbed versions of anything, it's too distracting.

[SPOILERS]
From what you described, I believe you might have seen the UK ending, assuming there was a little girl with a birthday cake. I think the US ending simply cut that scene out. I'm not sure which I like better. Darker is usually better, but not always. They're both pretty good.

I didn't like the "darker" Director's Cut ending of Army of Darkness. It was kinda hoaky, and more importantly, cut out one of the best scenes in the movie -- the demon at S-Mart.

Ya, I was mildly entertained by The Cave, it was just painful to watch some scenes, as they were very hollywood cookie-cutter cliches, especially the end, which made it rather anticlimatic.

I agree. I actually did something crazy and showed this movie to my parents. They seemed to handle it okay, but I felt kinda bad afterwards.

Just a head's up about Martyrs... You might find that one unwatchable, and there would be no shame whatsoever in feeling that way. I imagine at least half the horror-watching community would agree, and near 100% of the rest of the movie-watching community. It's an experiment in discomfort. An utterly brilliant film IMO, but many will find it hard to evaluate, either because it's too disturbing, or because the disturbing nature will affect the viewer's ability to evaluate it on its merits, or because it will be dismissed outright with some oversimplified categorization.

Say, Gigan, just curious, how would rank these films in most scariest?

REC
The Descent
Martyrs
Inside

Wow, that's a tough one. "Scariest" depends on a lot of factors, and it changes day to day, and with each passing mood. If I were to try to define "scary," it would be some combination of 1) gives me that goosebumps feeling while watching it, and 2) makes me think twice when walking down a dark hallway afterwards. By that definition, I would rank them:

REC
The Descent
Inside
Martyrs

The reason being, REC and The Descent have those ghoulish, mysterious things hiding in the corners, which is creepy, and you're expecting something to jump out at you. Last night, I watched the Lucky McKee episode of Masters of Horror, "Sick Girl," where a woman basically starts turning into a bug, and tentacles and stuff start coming out of her mouth and ears. It made the hairs on my skin stand up.

However, one thing I often (but not always) look for in horror films these days (and exploitation, dark dramas, disturbing crime thrillers & documentaries) is not so much that creepy scary feeling, but the feeling of being generally "affected." So basically, 1) did the movie make me uncomfortable watching it, and 2) did it leave me unnerved for some time afterwards. By this definition, I would rank them:

Martyrs
Inside
The Descent
REC

This is not so much a measure of violence, but really anything that could screw me up in the head when watching it, which I consider a successful experience (within certain boundaries, of course).

Just a quick followup.. You mentioned you showed it to your folks. What'd they think of it?

I been reading some reviews of it, they seem pretty polarize, between saying, at the conclusion of the film, it's nihilistic or " one leaves the theatre more enamoured with humanity than ever". I don't take any pleasure watching 'torture' in any form, but as a horror fan, it's not the issue. I'd certainly consider it if it was meaningful, but not if it's ultimately nihilistic.

I assume you're asking about Inside because that's the one I showed my parents. However, it sounds like you're describing Martyrs.

So... Inside...

My parents didn't have a lot of words to say afterwards. My dad tried to make a joke, but neither parent was particularly chatty, which leads me to believe they just wanted to move on and forget about it.

Based on your comment about torture, I'm not sure that you'd like this film. It doesn't actually really have any torture in it, but let's just say that the level of physical and psychological stress that the main character endures is way up there. The movie most certainly has meaning, but that depends on the individual's interpretation. One conclusion that can be drawn is somewhere near the the opposite of nihilism, as long as you can either empathize with the antagonist, or draw broader conclusions from her actions. Her value of life is so overwhelming that she is willing to destroy anyone in her path. I don't want to say any more than that though.

If... you're asking about Martyrs...

Martyrs, I imagine would be even more polarizing. Inside, is essentially a slasher, but one that bastardizes the formula (as the French are currently doing). Martyrs, on the other hand, takes elements from a variety of horror subgenres, but the end result is a whole new beast. IMO there's not another movie like it. This one does include torture, and a lazy analysis would be to dismiss it because of that. Also, unlike, say, Saw, where perhaps some of the fun is watching the various ways people get trapped and killed, there's no pleasure whatsoever to be had in the torturous scenes in Martyrs. Instead, it's an exhausting experience for the viewer. The theme explored is whether or not one can experience a level of pain beyond what you could possibly imagine, to the point where the only means of existence is to embrace the pain and rise to a new level of existence. Forcing the viewer to endure this is essentially a parallel experiment on the viewer. I won't spoil the ending, but it's intentionally vague, and a variety of conclusions could be drawn from it. This, and the difficult subject matter and imagery are sure to result in some pretty polarizing opinions. Based on your comment about torture though, I would not recommend watching it.
