Deviating from the tournaments (which honestly have been done to death, and then some), I have been thinking of this for a few days now. It will require some active participation and the purpose - to determine how the films in the sub-genre of haunted houses, ghosts, paranormal and the supernatural stack up against each other when it comes to inducing pure and unadulterated terror in their viewing experiences. We will also be looking at several close-to-real-life horror films which have been successful at scaring audiences the world over for a good many years till now.

It will also help to address a complaint we have been reading from contemporary horror fans - how they have become jaded to films of our favorite genre. Do we still have films which can add to that terror experience? Let's find out.

The rating system for this will be quite simple. (you can call this the Scare-O-Meter)

1 = Not scary at all,
2 = Mildly scary except for some scenes,
3 = Moderately scary with some effective scenes,
4 = Solidly scary, and
5 = Downright terrifying!

I will post 3 films every day. All you have to do is rate them on the abovesaid scale of 1-5. A film needs at least 3 ratings to score on the Scare-O-Meter, otherwise it will end up as Insufficient Data.

We will add up all scores at the end and average it out, to see where the film(s) stack up in the Scare-O-Meter!

For example, The Shining receives a cumulative score of 45 from 10 members, so it's average score comes to 4.5. That lies between "Solidly Scary" and "Downright terrifying!", and that's a very high score!

And who knows, maybe we will end up adding a few more films to the Halloween must-watch lists of the fans reading this thread.

First set of films will be up later today.

A film needs at least 3 ratings to score on the Scare-O-Meter, otherwise it will end up as Insufficient Data. Remember to rate the films according to their spookiness/scare factor, and not as how good/bad they are.

I will update the first post accordingly.

1 = Not spooky at all,
2 = Not that spooky except for some scenes,
3 = Mildly scary with some very effective scenes,
4 = Solidly scary, and
5 = Downright terrifying!
V, I think you need to edit #4, you have "and" without anything after it (at the moment).

I like the idea too! Although 3 a day may be a bit aggressive, or more precisely, may become a bit laborious for you and the raters, and mute the fun. I think we like to talk about the films too.

It's strange, I was excited to see the list of 3 movies, and then when I saw them, I realized the spooky/scary/terrifying feeling level isn't always easy to recall. Am I alone in that thought? There's horror movies that made a significant feeling hit on me (say, The Exorcist), which I remember well, but most may have been effectively spooky to me, but not enough to leave a memorable spooky level impression. But on the other hand, we could say those are going to be the films with a low spooky score.

The Others - 3

House on Haunted Hill - didn't see the remake 1999 yet; which I didn't even notice coming out in 1999. look forward to seeing it, as I really liked the '59.

What Lies Beneath - 2

The Others was many times better than What Lies Beneath because of the scripts; but I thought director Robert Zemeckis gave Beneath some mildly effective craft. The idea of the Others is genius. The detail of setting, mood effects, lighting, etc were also good. The ending is the kicker, of course. The actual content leading up to the end was mildly spooky to me; I give a low 3.

I completely agree with your first paragraph. I too, was having difficulty remembering how scary The Others was or was not. I thought that a three was probably the best choice. I also completely agree with your paragraph on The Others (except for what you said on What Lies Beneath because I have not seen it to make a judgment). I really thought that The Others was a really well-made film. Of course, the ending changes your perception of the whole film.

Also, I just want to note that there are some movies that were really good, but I just don't consider scary. For instance, the original House on Haunted Hill is really good, but it just is not scary to me. Honestly, as indicated in my rating, I don't even consider the remake to be scary either. The remake is okay, but I thought it could have been way better.

The Others (based on 10 ratings) - 2.4
House on Haunted Hill (remake, based on 6 ratings) - 1.3

The Changeling is really good. It was a relatively creepy ghost story and George C Scott gave a terrific performance as Dr. John Russell (the beginning is especially interesting). Despite seeming a little aged (not that there is anything wrong with that), this film definitely has some really effective scenes. I have not seen the other two films, but I would definitely recommend seeing this film because it is a classic. As for my scoring:

The Changeling: 3

Ghost Story: Haven't seen

Lady in White: Haven't seen

Only seen Ghost Story. It comes from the era when big name stars were flocking to appear in horror films, and is well regarded by some. I can't remember much about it, since it's been so long since I've seen it. Adapted from a Peter Straub novel, which is quite good.

My nephew is coming over this weekend (for my birthday) and we will be watching a bunch of horror movies (me and him are big horror movie fans). I just now ordered (I still have some birthday money and what not) the original Shutter solely based on your recommendation V. I hope it is really good. I should note that supernatural movies tend to scare me, so hopefully it will be both good and scary. Is it anything like Tale of Two Sisters? Oops - yes, in my case, it was a mistake. I didn't even know it was a remake... sorry about that. If the original is really that scary, then it must be the worst remake ever, because it couldn't have been any more boring in my opinion.

I'll definitely give the original a chance if I can find it, although I have to say that the typical Asian horror "girl with long black hair staring at the floor" stuff doesn't work on me - except for "The Grudge" for some reason, especially the originals - and the TV versions, which I think are WAY more creepy even though they are less graphic.

It got a lukewarm response because it came out right after The Sixth Sense and was in a similar vein. It wasn't as well-received and has never been able to shake that stigma. I agree with neverending -- it's a very good horror thriller, and its too bad it hasn't been better appreciated.

It's tough to separate these three movies, they are all beautifully spooky/ scary in their own way and full of atmosphere...

House of Usher: 4 (My favourite of the three and sets a perfect tone and atmosphere).

Pit and the Pendulum: 4 (The most intense of the Poe adaptations)

Masque of the Red Death: 4 (Amazing atmosphere, great performance from Price!)

Loving that movies aren't being pitted against each other in the traditional tournament format, but instead are being rated without a winner/ loser format.... Always feel so guilty/ disappointed in the tournaments where I effectively have to vote against amazing movies and usually end up abstaining or throwing a vote to a good movie just so it doesn't get whitewashed!

I saw Stir of Echos last night, so (_V_) you can add my spooky rating to the Stir total. Loved the subject matter of hypnotism, and sensitivity the spiritual world. Quality cinematography, shots, directing, acting. Found it hard not to judge it against other movies of it's general type, Dead Zone, Shining, Jacobs Ladder, (seeing dead goes back: Topper, Beetleguise, Frightners), 6th Sense, etc. Stir didn't really have any new take on this old plot line (wouldn't count hypno as new). Nice escape movie of the genre. I personally like 6th Sense much better.

I saw Burnt Offerings several times as a child and was horrified that the father could become influenced by spirits to the point he would attempt to drown his child. The pool scene and the final scene left an impact on me.

The Exorcist is the only movie I can think of that scared the crap out of me before I ever saw it. In fact, I never saw it until I was almost 30. I remember one time while I was in college, I thought I was going to finally watch it. I lived in a big house by myself and was taping the movie in the living room while doing dishes in the kitchen. The TV was on and I could hear it from a distance. It creeped me out so much I never watched the tape.

Now the movie is in a constant battle with The Shining as my favorite horror movie of all time.

Yes it is. The image of Candace Hilligoss coming out of the water, and of The Man in the background is proof. Couldn't find a bigger pic/poster of it on Amazon to hotlink.

Plus, the remake goes by the tag of "Wes Craven Presents...", so that is another big distinguishing factor.

The film sets are of the same period/nearby years, if you have noticed from the beginning. They share the same period (almost) and sometimes, the same maker(s).

Wow - I'm surprised to see how well "Rosemary's Baby" is doing. Not that there's anything wrong with it, because obviously what scares you is a very individual thing. But I've watched it twice, and found it extremely boring and not at all scary. Everyone else seems to think it's so super scary, though. I wish I could see what everyone else is seeing. Obviously, anyone would be terrified of anything happening to their child, but I don't think the movie works on a psychological level at all. At least not for me.

Both of the film that I have seen are amazing movies, which would probably reach my top 20 or at least 25. It is just that I do not consider them scary. Rosemary's Baby is one of those movies, like Paranormal Activity, where you have to be able to empathise with the main character in order to understand why it is scary. If you can't share her feelings of betrayal and uncertainty, her complete isolation, not knowing who, if anyone, she can trust, or if she can even trust her own senses, then you won't find this movie scary.

It's not a judgemental statement- it's just a matter of fact- some people are not able to feel ampathy, to put themselves in someone else's world and feel what they feel. Certain movies require this in order to get the full effect.

Although I agree that that's true for many people, I'm actually diagnosed as hypersensitive and usually react strongly to the emotions of people around me, so I don't really think that's my own problem with the movie. But for me to feel empathy for a character in a movie, the character has to be believeable - and whatever happens around them has to be believeable too. If it's not, then it's "just a movie", and it won't trigger any emotions in me at all.

If the mother was a REAL person, and not a character in a movie, obviously I'd feel emapthy for her. Some movies or actors are so good that they kind of make you "forget" that what you're watching isn't real, but that's not the case with Rosemary's Baby - in my opinion.

I guess you'll have to be content to be in the minority on that point. Mia Farrow was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her portrayal. Variety called her performance "outstanding." Rotten Tomatoes consensus on the film (which maintains a 98% fresh rating) states "A frightening tale of Satanism and pregnancy that is even more disturbing than it sounds thanks to convincing and committed performances by Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon." Ira Levin, who wrote the book, liked her performance so much he dedicated his sequel to her.

And of course, the status of the film as a true classic, which it would not be able to maintain if the performance of the central character was weak.

I definitely agree that the film is absolutely brilliant and when I watched it I was absolutely captivated. It is an all-round amazing film. I also agree that Mia Farrow's performance was excellent; she definitely deserved any awards she won or was nominated for. To me, she seemed like a genuine person and not just a movie character. I completely understand all the arguments presented here. I simply never regarded the film as scary. Of course, I have Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism), so sympathy/empathy have always been difficult concepts for me. Ultimately, I understand why some of you think it is scary; I simply never thought of it as such.

A lot of bad actors and crappy movies have won awards - but I'm not really saying the movie is crap, because obviously a lot of people love it. It just doesn't work for me. To be honest with you though, I think the fact that I was raised as a Jehovas Witness - and my struggles as a teen to break free from i - might influence how I respond to movies with similar themes in general.

I think the way I respond to movies such as Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist might be very different than it would have been if I had grown up as a "normal" kid. Then again, there are movies in that genre of horror that definitely made me uncomfortable.

Ah yes, the overtly scary scenes are the ones I remember visually, but -- memory refreshed -- the primary cause of the viewer's discomfort is the unthinkable situation Farrow's character finds herself in, where everyone, even her husband, has betrayed her, and the impossible feat of breaking free from it. The milkshakes! It's been a couple years. I'm due for another watch. :)

Scare-O-Meter scores (out of 5)

Night of the Living Dead (based on 9 ratings) - 4.0
Rosemary's Baby (based on 9 ratings) - 3.7
Spirits of the Dead - Insufficient Data

An underrated Fellini gem which needs to be seen by more people, most definitely. The other two genre heavyweights score solidly in the rankings.

All 3 added to the opening post.

Netflix and Movies Unlimited don't have it. Haven't checked Amazon yet.
