Jesus-fucking-Christ on a cracker.....

I have to stick to my guns and go with The Joker...Erik was just evil because of his shitty situation - Joker's evil for the sheer fun of it. And, IMO, that's both scarier and more entertaining to watch.

Sorry Lon...

The Joker. He is evil just because there is evil to be had. I don't even know if he considers it fun; he is just bad for the sake of bad.

Most villains have a reason. Whether they were abused as a child, some kind of gain or vengeance. Even most religious villains have valid reasons. The Joker needs no reason. As far as we know, he is what he is for no other good reason than he knows nothing else. He wasn't raised or even born that way; he doesn't do what he does because that's all that's inside him, or he hasn't been taught another way. He is chaos incarnate. There is no other way for him to be. You can't change a rock into an orange. The Joker is evil because he is evil. There is no other way for him to be, nor has there ever been. Heaths award winning performance aside, the character itself embodies the epitome of what bad is. He's not the biggest bastard in the world, like Tim Roth's character in Rob Roy. He's not a completely vile killer like Henry. He's just evil in every single aspect of the word with no excuse and no redeeming qualities.

I think you make a good argument, Wolfie, but I disagree with you on some points and I'm going to have to go with Erik on this one.

With Erik, he is a pure tragic figure. He did not choose his fate; his fate was written upon him on birth and he spent an entire life of dejection, finding solitude within the old Opera House. While the Joker has the choice to live amongst the citizens of Gotham, he chooses not to; for Erik, he is a pure outcast, reaching into the depths of his black soul for any way that he can possibly overpower his foes - through haunting, through extortion - so much more subtle than our Joker friend; no need for pomp and pizazz in his evil doings. He is a Villainous Icon though the annuls of cinema and literary history... Portrayed by thespian icons from Lon Chaney to Claude Rains - The Joker is just a fad - a passing phase bolstered by the single surprising performance of a young up-and-coming Aussie (God rest his soul)... But Erik - The Phantom is eternal.

Yeah...aside from the fact that he's been going strong for the better part of a century.

He's been around and popular since 1940...

Yes, but I'm trying to make the point that that it was Heath Ledger's iconic last performance that really bolstered his new level of pop villainy. In terms of Male Villains, I don't think that The Joker would be going as strong in this tournament if it wasn't for The Dark Knight.

Not to belittle The Joker at all - He's one my absolute favorite comic book villains and he is iconic within the annuls of comic book and comic book adaptation culture. I just think that Ledger's performance gives the Joker character a significant advantage over Erik... So a counter argument had to be made.

That or I just like being argumentative. :D

Azazel005
12-30-2008, 08:04 AM
Oooooh, Interesting. While I certainly agree the strength of Ledger's performance may lend him an unfair advantage, and also that I love the phantom very much, I think I have to stress against him above the Joker, certainly in terms of a greater "villian".

Phantom is a wonderful character and carries his tale more or less as both the Hero and Villian, we suffer for him as much as we fear him. Christine's rejection of him is as much understood as resented, that in some ways makes him a stronger character then the Joker but not a stronger villian.

The Joker is incomprehensible, it his multiple incarnations such as Ledger's performance and the almost as Iconic Mark Hammil voiced animated Joker. Don't be fooled the Joker in his more modern comic book forms if far more frightening then any of those. They all lend a sort of cuteness to his vicous madness, something that the real Joker would probably find them, and hang them on a noose out the front of their parents house before blowing it up.

He is mad, but he is vicous and unpredictable to a fault, people have allied themselves with him knowing full well he was not to be trusted and still walk away horrified at the lengths he'd go for his own sick amusement. The Joker has none of the fluffy charms of his film and animated conterparts, well perhaps a little but they are so far muddle in his extreme sadism and vicousness that you simply can't relate or emphasise with him at all, ever not in your wildest dreams. If you thought you could trust me, in all these years he would have found away to disturb you so much that you wouldn't dare.

Of course this is Movie Villians, which means we have Nicholsons Jokes, and Ledger's both wonderful characters vs Claude Raines and Gerard Butler's Phantoms, the latter who is projected much more heriocially.

Raines was good, but I don't think either of them much Jack or Heath's Joker.

Joker for me.

Despare
12-30-2008, 08:32 AM
I'm usually the first Joker detractor (I like the character just fine and love both Jack's and Heath's performances in recent films but I just think he's far from the best villain of all time) but Erik was too sympathetic a figure in my eyes. My vote goes to the laughing man.
