There are so many good movies being watched by HDC members that it is high time we had this thread.
The "Last Seen Movie" thread seems cluttered with recommendations and it takes quite a while to surf back pages to get at recommended ones, which usually takes up some time, even after subscribing to that particular thread.
So, folks of HDC, have you watched a good movie lately which has made quite an impression on you? Bring it here, and let others read and make a note of your highlighted recommendations.
This thread is by HDC members, for HDC members...and beyond. :)

A few recommendations that I sent to my friends recently:
Altered (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457275/) – From the co-creator of Blair Witch project, here is a film about alien abductees. But, I promise you, it's not as lame as it sounds. Director Eduardo Sanchez takes the story of a group of redneck friends who, a few years earlier were abducted by aliens but now, in the present have captured one of them an are exacting their revenge. This description hardly gives it justice. The characters are interesting, compelling, and legitimately earn the pathos of the watcher. What I find amazing about this film is that, at no point, did I find myself saying questioning my suspension of disbelief; I was able to suspend my belief entirely, even despite what seems to be a ridiculous plot. This movie is dark, well-written, and well-acted. Some good jumps, some good blood, and overall recommended.
Ils (aka, in English: Them) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465203/) – Holy home invasion! This foreign film had me gripping my boyfriend's hand tighter than I have in a very long time. There's plenty suspense, distress, helplessness, and struggle. This film does not try to be anything but a home invasion film (i.e. it's just good pure suspense horror), but it does it extremely well. Scared the HELL out of me when I watched it. Good film to watch with all the lights off, though it made me want to get a landline and a security system.
May (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/) – Significantly more high art than the aforementioned horrors, this is a pure character piece of a very disturbed girl, May. The Netflix movie description simply does not do it justice, however. This movie is dark, at times humorous, and at its core, incredibly disturbing. May explores and deconstructs horror/slasher films artfully while also providing us with a purely pathetic and horrifying character. It's odd, eccentric, and terrifying at the same time. Slow at first, but uniquely disturbing by the end. Possibly one of my favorite endings in horror history.
Inside (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0856288/) - A more gory version of the home invasion genre that creates possibly one of the most realistic and horrifying Big Bads that I have seen on screen. Where Ils made its success with suspense, Inside made its success with crafted gore that does not diverge into torture porn. It's suspenseful, excruciating, and has definitely raised the bar for what I come to expect from home invasion movies. Also, a very smart slasher that has more going on than simply stalking. I cannot emphasize how incredible this film really is.

Have to catch up on Altered. Thanks for reminding, Chrono. :)
For lovers of giallo cinema, I have three recommendations - Mario Bava's excellent Blood and Black Lace, The Girl Who Knew Too Much and Kill, Baby... Kill!.
The former one is one of my all-time favs in horror, and both the latters aren't far behind. Awesome cinematography and direction, loads of atmosphere, and great adaptations of the scripts. Neat backgrounds, nice inventive kills and pretty decent characterisations. Overall, solid movie-watching experiences.

Yes! A movie that should be a mist see for any horror fan...incredible atmosphere + plot, plus one of the creepiest closing lines ever delivered. That ending still gives me chills and I've seen it at least 5-6 times.
I haven't seen a whole lot lately, but here's an older little cult flick that everyone her should check out:
Class of 1984
I'm sure a lot of you guys have already seen it, but I just caught it for the first time last week. Fantastic movie - the two leads give performances that far transcend the genre, as does Roddy McDowell in an amazing supporting role.
Every time Perry King and Timothy Van Patten are on screen together its like a clash of titans - both of them give such powerhouse performances. It doesn't hurt that they're working from a script with whip-sharp dialogue and an eerily prophetic storyline.
If anyone hasn't had the chance, grab this flick ASAP.

Yeah...another fantastic thread introduced by V!
You guys have already recommended all the great recommendable flicks that I have seen recently....Inside, Ils, Orphanage, Rec., Orphanage, Ils, Inside, Rec. and Rec. Inside, Orphanage & Ils.....
And Session 9 & May... both are remarkably good horror films.
I like to add The Ungodly/The Perfect Witness (2007), Ray Winstone's Sweeney Todd (2006), another French horror Frontier(s) & Argento's Mother of tears....but I'm afraid that some of you may not like this last chapter of mother trilogy. I enjoyed it..because I have become a blind Argento fan but still now I think it has some flaws.
Have to catch up on Altered. Thanks for reminding, Chrono. :)

Absolutely. This is, by far, one of my favorite indie horror flicks. Also, it was shot in the asylum in Danvers, MA, so that local touch really intrigues me as well.
It's definitely a must-see for horror fans. A true gem.

Of all the movies to remake...what the hell?
I mean, I can kinda understand why they'd update Amityville, Halloween, TCM, The Fog...even Wicker Man and Hills Have Eyes to an extent.
But really now, what in God's name is the point of remaking something as loony as Spider Baby? I...I can't even get my head around that.

Straying for horror again, but:
11:14
Saw this one awhile back totally at random. My dad brought it home from the store and I'd never heard of it, figured it was worth a shot - wow! It's set up alot like Crash (2004) in the way that it's told, and the subject matter is vaguely similar, but it's chock full of really dark humor, great performances, and some very cool plot devices and twists.
If you can find it, give it a try.

It's amazing that two movies with such a similar plot + method of storytelling can be so drastically different. They'd make a hell of a double feature, IMO.

The French Connection (1971)
William Friedkin's (The Exorcist) crime thriller- Oscar winner of 1971- is a picture that continues to stun me with every revisit. The film is so hard-hitting and balls-to-the-wall its nearly unbearable. Gene Hackman (who won Best Actor) inhabits the character of Popeye Doyle with ferocious angst and aggression and puts on a performance which is utterly believable. Roy Scheider backs this up with a hint of humor, slyly but unforcefully added for a bizarre taste. The result is one of the most intense and believable cop stories to ever grace the silver screen, and Friedkin's tight, documentary-like style continues to entrance in a disturbingly shocking, brutal way.
This, as always, comes highly recommended. Anyone who has never witnessed The French Connection must do so immediately. You won't be sorry.

very, very good. turned out to be one of my very favorites of last year.
technically, it's an incredibly well-made piece of cinema.
it looks great, features some incredible acting, and truly nothing in it felt expendable or wasteful.

Watched both of these during the time I was away from here, and I couldn't agree more. Both are excellent and very well done, and I recommend them very highly to anyone that still hasn't seen them.
Its driving me a little insane not being able to see [Rec], and we have had The Fountain here for months, and haven't watched it yet. Will do so very soon.

not only very funny - but a dead on portrayal of the lack of communication between many men and women in relationships .. and how people are compelled to constantly do the wrong thing.

Carol Reed (The Third Man) directs this Hitchcockian thriller with delicate hands and a careful eye, hiding chilling treasures in rewarding places. Told through the eyes of a child, a murder-mystery unfolds with strange realism in a setting where the actual murder is the least of the issues and begins to unpeel the innocence of a young boy as he is taught lessons of imperfection and horror in forceful precision.

Rick Rosenthal directed Halloween II which is my personal favorite of the sequels. He also the directed worst (Halloween: Resurrection) but don't let that put you off. Like I said earlier this is KILLER!

Manson
Laurence Merrick and Robert Hendrickson's 1973 documentary is a chilling account of the Manson murders. It gives a insight to "The Family" that's every bit as creepy as a horror film. One of the most fascinating documentaries I've seen. This is most definitive chronicle of Manson you'll get. Essential!

Toy Soldiers
A great cast makes this Stand By Me meets Die Hard film really work. I dug this one as a kid and picked up a copy recently and it still kicks ass. Louis Gosset Jr, R. Lee Emery and Denholm Elliot are solid. Andrew Divoff is great as the villain (just like in Another 48 Hrs). This film has great pacing and doesn't drag and pulls off the multi-genre spliceup with class because of its tight well written script. But more importantly this film is a lot of fun.

A boy in a wheelchair, a mild mannered schoolteacher who imagines himself a superhero, alien green blobs invading the Earth, government conspiracies..,. all melded into one cockeyed plot that straddles genres with perfect finesse. Manages to be domestic drama, sci fi, horror, satire- and it all WORKS.
Inspirational, heartwarming, hip cool, and hilarious all at the same time. Honestly, I haven't been so impressed with a movie in a long long time.
Manages to get some hilarious barbs in against the ghost woman with long hair, buildings sealed with red tape and Ultraman type superheros. So many deft small touches of humor and even some symbolism and political comment.
I just can't rave enough about this movie.

Out of the Blue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0839938/)
I Netflix'd this movie out of a recommendation from Neverending and I'd just like to say THANK YOU NE. This movie is a brilliant piece of honest, raw, horrifying direction that chronicles a day in the life of New Zealand's one and only serial killer... and his hapless victims. As NE has said, this is a veritable horror gem. It is intense, it is real, and it takes cinematic panic to a level that I haven't seen on screen (for those of you who have been unfortunate enough to see Van San'ts Elephant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363589/), this is everything that Elephant should have been; it's the historical-fictional-docuhorror without the ignorant pretentiousness). Most (if not all) of the characters in the film are based on the people who were affected on the 13th and 14th of November, 1990, so there is a ubiquitous feeling of true vulnerability and helplessness throughout the film that you rarely see in cinema; I truly did NOT know who would survive... And that was part of the horror.
I ABSOLUTELY recommend this film. It comes with the Chrono-NE Seal of Approval.
A/A+

Home Movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1267319/)
I found Indie Horror Movie Gem #2 while perusing the New Movies that Comcast On Demand had to offer...
Initially, I was skeptical. Home Movie uses the hand held cam technique made popular by Blair Witch that now seems to be the latest horror movie making trend (in Cloverfield, Diary of the Dead, [rec], Quarantine - Even spoofed by South Park). The movie started off a little rocky (the premise being a family who obsessively records their lives, including the eventual indiscretions, bizarre behavior, and vertiginous descent into darkness) but begins to build speed at a rapid pace. The main antagonists of the film are the children, whose strange behavior is captured right away on film and, for the audience, sends up some rather obvious red flags (to the point where you want to strangle the directorial parental figures); but you get past that and the film captures some truly eerie images and creates some honestly creepy moments. Also, there were a couple of parts in particular that I thought were brilliantly risque and disturbing and I have to give a nod to the film for having the guts to show them.
Not a perfect film by any means and, in terms of style it's nothing particularly new... However, it reexamines the role of children in horror and takes a pretty creepy new vision of the concept of the Bad Seed.
Actually - The more I think about this film, the more I appreciate it.

Two young boys, orphaned and living on the streets, have grown up protecting the city in which they live. I've been having pretty good luck watching "Horror" stuff that I find on Rotten Tomatoes sorted by tomatometer made this decade with a rating over 70%. I watched Eden Lake last week and Splinter last night http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10010329-splinter/ both of which I found this way and then checked what people here had said and both were pretty good. I'm about to watch Horror http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/horror/ based on its rating there. I don't necessarily agree that stuff that's 100% fresh there is great, but pretty much everything I've watched over 80% has been good.
Edit: Horror has 80% at Rotten Tomatoes and 7.3/10 but I thought it sucked.

If you like quirky well written comedies this will be right up you alley. Its a shame Belushi was taken from us so soon as this flick shows the versitility of comedic style. Initally panned by critics and fans alike (people were expecting another Blues Brothers I guess) this is a film that deserves to be revisited because it was well ahead of its time IMO.
Really sharp satire of the "white picket fence" culture delivered by a strong cast and beautifully shot by John G. Avildsen this flick is a winner.

Wristcutters: A Love Story
A whimsically profound story that takes place in a purgatory world where suicides live. What would a world be like that was inhabited only by people who had comitted suicide? It's a pretty funny world, actually- even if nobody ever smiles. This is the driest dark comedy I've ever seen, and the three leads who find themselves on a road trip in this world, each for their own reasons, travelling in a rundown car with a black hole in the floor, are perfectly cast. I particularly enjoyed Eugene, a young musician of Russian ancestry who comitted suicide by pouring beer onto his electric guitar and electrocuting himself.
Tom Waits turns up, as does the guy who played Jerry on ER, and the lead of that awful Fearnet movie Catacombs. Turns out she can really act.
One of the best and most varied assembled soundtracks I've come across, with music by Tom Waits, Artie Shaw, Gram Parsons, Screaming Lord Sutch, Del Shannon, Joe Meek and a trio of tunes by Gogol Bordello, a post-modern Balkan cabaret outfit that add immeasurably to the atmosphere.
Watch this if you get a chance.

Wow. This blew me away. What a wonderful, crazy, hyper-kinetic ode to the confusion and mess of childhood. Guy Maddin pulls a lot of inspiration from horror of the 20s and 30s.
It's quite out there, but I highly, highly recommend it.

Revolutionary Road (2008)
I have a review up in "Last Seen". Not for a long time have I actually *felt* a movie. This film is absolutely real, and parts of it had me literally feeling nauseous. Not an easy film to watch, but an important one. DiCaprio and Winslet have never been better.

V's new Asian horror venture made me think of this:
A few of the very best Asian horror films (and, go figure, all three have been released by Criterion). If you haven't seen these, do it! Especially if you're submitting a list to the Asian horror top 100.
Kwaidan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058279/) (1964)
From Criterion.com:
"Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, Kwaidan features four nightmarish tales in which terror thrives and demons lurk. Adapted from traditional Japanese ghost stories, this lavish, widescreen production drew extensively on Kobayashi’s own training as a student of painting and fine arts."
http://eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/images/stills/kwaidan/1.jpg
Jigoku (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154683/) (1960)
"Shocking, outrageous, and poetic, Jigoku (Hell, a.k.a. The Sinners of Hell) is the most innovative creation from Nobuo Nakagawa, the father of the Japanese horror film. After a young theology student flees a hit-and-run accident, he is plagued by both his own guilt-ridden conscience and a mysterious, diabolical doppelgänger. But all possible escape routes lead straight to hell—literally. In the gloriously gory final third of the film, Nakagawa offers up his vision of the underworld in a tour de force of torture and degradation. A striking departure from traditional Japanese ghost stories, Jigoku, with its truly eye-popping (and -gouging) imagery, created aftershocks that are still reverberating in contemporary world horror cinema."
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3743/jigokucd7.jpg
and my favorite of the three,
Onibaba (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058430/)(1964)
"Deep within the wind-swept marshes of war-torn medieval Japan, an impoverished mother and her daughter-in-law eke out a lonely, desperate existence. Forced to murder lost samurai and sell their belongings for grain, they dump the corpses down a deep, dark hole and live off of their meager spoils. When a bedraggled neighbor returns from the skirmishes, lust, jealousy, and rage threaten to destroy the trio’s tenuous existence, before an ominous, ill-gotten demon mask seals the trio’s horrifying fate. Driven by primal emotions, dark eroticism, a frenzied score by Hikaru Hayashi, and stunning images both lyrical and macabre, Kaneto Shindo’s chilling folktale Onibaba is a singular cinematic experience."

I'm not really sure wether this has already been recommended or not (it probably has).
But I have to recommend REC to all of you. This one blew me away, like no zombie movie ever did. Loads of atmosphere & scares. And the fact that it's a foreign movie only makes it better in my opinion.
I've also been told that the remake Quarantine is quite good aswell.

Absolutely, without a doubt, the best TV show I've seen in years. Great, unpredictable writing, solid performances, unique take on the familial, etc. etc. Incredibly original and flawlessly-written/performed program.
I can't recommend this show strongly enough. New episodes start next Sunday!

Mr. King is absolutely right.
Seriously, do yourself a wonderful favor and check it out. The first season was only 7 episodes long and the season 2 premier was this past Sunday, so there's not much catchup to do.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a documentary called "In God's Name". VERY interesting and very well done. As I figured it would be as it was done by the Naudet brothers, the filmmakers of the documentary "9/11". Below is the Netflix description:
"Asking important questions about the nature of God, this National Geographic program compiles interviews from a range of religious and spiritual leaders around the world, adding the perspective of everyday people to paint a global portrait of faith. Topics covered include: Who or what is God? What is death? What is worth dying for? And how can we explain fanaticism and violence waged in the name of God?"
And here's the review I wrote:
"This is a wonderfully informative and interesting documentary. I figured it had to be, coming from the Naudet brothers, as I was so impressed by "9/11". It's a completely unbiased portrait of various religious and spiritual leaders around the world, each giving their personal thoughts on various topics. I put this in my queue because I wanted to see what Bishop Mark Hanson of the Lutheran church had to say since I'm Lutheran. I must say, I was very impressed by him. What a cool dude! There were also some religious and spiritual leaders I had never heard of (Amma being one of them) that I immediately looked up on the internet. Even if you're not religious or spiritual in any way, I think you would find it interesting. If you are, definitely put this in your queue - you won't regret it!"

http://culturagratuita.org/fotos/let-the-right-one-in.jpg
This is not a horror movie. It is not a vampire movie. At least, neither of those are the defining words I'd use to describe the essence of the film. It's about the mess of adolescence. It's an against-the-odds love story. It's about surviving in this world, doing what must be done. All classic, timeless templates, only in this instance told against a unique backdrop. See, then maybe it's a vampire film, or a horror film.
It is slow, sad, dark, and cold, punctuated by both harshness and happiness, the dynamics of a haunting melody. It is blurry and distant, until Eli and Oskar, the two main characters, come together. Their interactions are close and intimate.
The performances of the two main kids are remarkable, fully consumed by not only their roles, but by the world created in the film. Especially Lina Leandersson, who plays Eli (the vampire), truly looks far older than her years.
The Dalai Lama once talked about every person being the center of his or her respective universe, and we get that in Oskar and Eli's world. From their prospective, together they create one universe, trying to omit the extraneous, not caring to question each other beyond traditional childish things. And that's really what it comes down to with this film.
Any complaints I may have had were rendered negligible by the end. I mean that in two ways: by the end of the film, I no longer cared about those parts; and by the way the film ended, I no longer cared about those parts. (Possible SPOILER) The finale is truly the most virtuosic part about the film, we finally get to see Oskar and Eli trim all the excess from their universe.
All in all, it's a truly wonderful film; one of the very best of 2008.

The Signal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/) (2007)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/the_signal_movie_poster.jpg
The Signal was by far one of the best movies of 2007. The concept is simple but effective: A mysterious signal is emitted over all television and radio waves which causes everyone to become violent, paranoid, murderous, and insane. Everyone is a threat.
Essentially, it's widespread insanity; with a delightfully absurd touch.
The first third of the movie is quite possibly some of the most gritty, realistic, and horrifying pieces of horror that I have ever seen. The direction is raw, honest, and brutal and the acting power of these little-knowns is believable and incredibly well-done. The second third of the movie takes a turn to the dark, black comedy and does so with brilliant transitions and comic timing of the crew.
Funny, horrifying, gripping, and satisfying. This is a brilliant, bloody horror film that everyone has to see.

Wanted to add a couple that I've pimped endlessly around here already...just wanted to add 'em here officially:
---------------------------------------------
Dark Heritage - The Final Descendant
http://i1.iofferphoto.com/img/item/864/938/06/QVbnP1ihNtrAJpa.jpg
My review from Unsung Top 100: From a critical point of view, this really isn’t a great movie by any stretch of the imagination. The actors are some of the worst that I have ever witnessed; the script is just as bad, and the budget makes Evil Dead look like the new King Kong.
“If it’s so bad, why do you like it so much?” you’re asking. Well despite its flaws, Dark Heritage has a sort of magic to it that would be the envy of even Ed Wood.
The story, based loosely on Lovecraft’s “Lurking Fear”, centers around a newspaper reporter named Clint Harrison and his quest to solve a strain of mysterious, brutal murders. The mystery leads him and his co-workers to an abandoned mansion deep in the woods…a mansion with a terrible, violent past and a shocking secret.
Even though he might be the only person involved that knows anything about filmmaking, the director is actually fairly competent (David McCormick, who amusingly enough was also an editor on the recent Wallace & Gromit film). If nothing else he creates some great atmosphere in many of the scenes, especially the tunnel sequences and the grisly spectacle near the end. Furthermore, the sepia toned dream sequence mid-film is one of the most memorable dream sequences since Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
Go into this movie with an open mind. By the typical definitions it might not be great filmmaking, but I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.
---------------------------------------------
Dungeon of Harrow
http://www.oldies.com/i/boxart/large/40/089218408495.jpg
My review from Unsung Top 100: “How many times have I stood before this symbol of my family's greatness? And now this crest and I are dying together. In another time and another place, I might have brought honor and glory to the Fallon family, but instead I shall leave a legacy of decay and unspeakable horror.”
Just try and tell me that that isn’t one heck of an awesome way to start a horror movie. A little overdramatic perhaps, but in a film like Dungeon of Harrow you should never expect anything less.
At first the plot is really nothing new or exciting, but it soon progresses into incredibly bizarre and original territory. The lone survivors of a shipwreck, the son of a wealthy Englishman and the captain of his ship find themselves on the Isle de Sade, home to a more-than-slightly off his rocker Count. They are found and welcomed into his castle, but soon discover that not everything is as it seems. To reveal more would be to spoil the plot, but suffice to say I bet you can’t guess where it’s going to go from here.
The actors are all deliciously over the top, especially William McNulty in the role of the Count. His hallucination scene near the first really sets the tone for the rest of the film: Strange, whacked out and a whole heaping load of fun. Take one spoonful of one of Roger Corman’s Poe movies, remove most of the budget and a lot of the talent involved, add a generous pinch of LSD for good measure and voila! Dungeon of Harrow, ready to serve. Best consumed with an open mind.
---------------------------------------------
Two of my all-time favourites. Just fun, cheesy horror - nothing fancy, but they make for a damn good viewing.

Okay, I'd like to preface this:
If you don't have a sense of humor and/or are easily offended, don't watch this film.
WR: Mysteries of the Organism (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067958/) (1971)
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_L4ukqgRfOYY/SS7rFIWEV5I/AAAAAAAAAF4/yKkMOi9lJHk/s400/image.jpg
Dušan Makavejev's darkly humorous film is a fanciful, bizarre collage of documentary footage, free-form fiction, found footage, narration, and musical numbers.
Starting off as a mocking, satiric (but real) documentary about controversial psychiatrist/philosopher Wilhelm Reich, the film begins to cross over into a fictional story about a young Yugoslavian revolutionary/Reich-follower's seduction of a Russian figure skater. Throughout the film, he also juxtaposes scenes from a Stalinist propaganda film, shots of performance artist Tuli Kupferberg in a solider's uniform stalking New Yorkers on the street, "plaster casting", transsexual monologues, and more. It sounds silly and outrageous, and it absolutely is, but it works. By making grotesque those things which keep us so serious (communism in Russia, sexual paradigm in America and human sexuality in general, psychology), Makavejev seems to hope for a better sense of humor about those things, important self-realization, and a greater flexibility of love and mind and body (and hopefully in this, a cure for what ails humanity). It is offensive, bold, funny, fascinating, and the work of a true anti-authoritarian.
The final result is truly a wonder.
A solid recommendation for, um...well, I'm not sure I could say.
Take a chance on it, I guess.

This one really surprised me - the plots are great, the lead actors all do an amazing job (especially considering most of them play 3 totally different parts), and the ending really gives you a lot to think about.
It's not very linear, but if you like movies that you have to put some thought into...you really should pick this up.
Thank you SO much for this recommendation. Watched it last night on Netflix Instant on your word... And it was fantastic.
Starts off INCREDIBLY strong, definitely nodding to Lynch (I said to my boyfriend, "This is like Lynch Light... with humor). Part 2 was a little slow (but just could have used some editing), but the end was perfect.
If you're looking for an indie flick with a touch of the existential absurdity (that is honestly not pretentious at all), DEFINITELY watch this one.

Anyone that considers themselves a fan of gangster flicks - if you haven't seen this already, do so immediately. Cagney gives one of his very best performances, and Bogart shows us his sleazy side in an atypical role.
A truly classic crime drama, deftly directed by Michael Curtiz, who manages to create some great tension throughout. One of the more overlooked classics that more people really should see. The ending alone is one of the most powerful scenes of the 1930's.

Trzecia czesc nocy (The Third Part of the Night) (1971)
http://www.secondrundvd.com/images/middle_panels/tpotn.jpg
It starts out with a recitation from the book of Revelation. The end-times. Set in Poland during WWII, for its characters, these are the end-times. After a young Polish man loses his wife, mother, and son to German soldiers, he joins an underground rebellion group. Through this, he happens to meet a woman that looks exactly like his wife, and a strange, (as much as I hate this word, it's appropriate here->) Kafkaesque journey through life in war-torn Poland unravels onscreen. Writer/director Andrzej Zulawski (Possession, 1981) bases key points on the story of his father, and tells his story with a subversive, gritty touch, and it plays out like a fevered dream, shifting through reality, flashbacks, and visions.
Excellent, politically-charged, apocalyptic cinema.

"When a miner leaves his employers and treks out with his young son to become a migrant worker, he finds himself moving from one eerie landscape to another, intermittently followed (and photographed) by an enigmatic man in a clean white suit, and eventually coming face to face with his inescapable destiny. Hiroshi Teshigahara’s debut feature and first collaboration with novelist Kobo Abe, Pitfall is many things: a mysterious, unsettling ghost story, a portrait of human alienation, and a compellingly surreal critique of soulless industry, shot in elegant black and white."
-From Criterion.com
A completely unique and deceptively complex work about many, many things that shifts between many, many different styles and moods and (even) genres, all the time feeling completely natural and never forced.
A damn impressive debut film from Hiroshi Teshigahara.
Highly recommended.

Hm, I'm very interested now in checking out Knowing. It looked so silly and I haven't really heard much about it, but with a rec from you I'll definitely be queuing it.
I feel the same way...had no intention of watching it - looked like typical, big-budget, by-the-numbers Hollywood sci-fi trash - but with all the praise it's been getting around here I'm starting to get really intrigued. will look into very soon.

All recommended.
Alky, Return & Fortunato...watch them asap. I want to know what others think of these, especially the latter two.
i thought Knowing had some holes but it was nice to see Cage sink his teeth into something he obviously cared about. also the crash effects were mind numbingly realistic.
Outlander was goofy fun. decent effects .. irresistable aliens vs vikings story line ..
the first viking killed by the creature was the canadian i photographed twice ...

Just watched it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I put up a mini-review over in Last Seen Movie.
As for the ending...the religious overtones were a bit heavyhanded for my liking, but otherwise I thought it was brilliant. Not what you'd typically see in this kind of movie at all.

I am really, really glad you liked it, A.
Yes the ending was on the religious-moralistic and spiritual side (as opposed to the scientific feel of the entire flick), and TBH that was one of the aspects which had me slightly worried about the mass appeal of Knowing.
(and seeing how it fared at the BO made me more apprehensive about people appreciating it even more)
But I am happy that you saw beyond it and related with the final climactic ending of the flick. Its slightly tough to see beyond all those questions posed by the ending, and you came through that. But still, it has become one of my favorite flicks of recent times. Thanks for giving it a shot on my rec. :)

That's when you punch them. In fact, I can't even think of a better reason for punching someone. Or even better, do it with the DVD.
Speaking of the DVD, isn't it out of print? I wish they'd re-release it cause I never bought it.
Have you seen The Third Part of the Night? What else by Zulawski is good?
It's also a good point to make that Isabelle Adjani's performance in Possession is probably one of the best and craziest I've ever seen.

I'm not sure, I don't remember :( I searched "possession" and the oldest post is october 2006. I know I saw it before the "The Unsung, The Underapperciated & the Bizarre: the 'Other' HDC Top 100" thread was made.
someone on this forum definitely made me want to rent it, not sure if it was in a recommendation, a list, or just a brief mention.

with a collaboration with Sydney Pollack, Robert Town, Paul Schrader, and Robert Mitchum, how could you go wrong? My words cant really do this film justice because im terrible at reviews, but here it goes.
This is by far my favorite Yakuza film, even though its made by an american director. I feel it really explores japanese culture, the concepts of honor and respect, friendship, and promises kept. Its got a classy, neo-noir atmosphere though out - real cool and subtle between it's intense and excellently shot action scenes. a great plot, great direction, great acting and great writing, now one of my top ten favs, give this one a watch asap.
