I'm not sure, I don't remember :( I searched "possession" and the oldest post is october 2006. I know I saw it before the "The Unsung, The Underapperciated & the Bizarre: the 'Other' HDC Top 100" thread was made.
someone on this forum definitely made me want to rent it, not sure if it was in a recommendation, a list, or just a brief mention.
i know i'd been talking about it before the unsung list ...
it was always one of my favorites - i was suprised to see that you knew it - back when you fist started mentioning it

A Page of Madness (1926) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017048/)
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_b6FST2JiSZ8/Rq5JlRYrsII/AAAAAAAAAl8/5E5tksx5te4/s400/Kurutta.jpg
A brilliant abstract portrayal of the inner mental state of the inmates in an asylum. Though sometimes it was bit complicated to follow, as it has got no inter titles but surely it was ahead of its time. Surprised by reading some online reviews of the film where they noted The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1920) as the biggest influence on the film, cause it also treats madness as prime subject. But the comparison with Dr. Caligari is quite pointless. This film handles the theme in a completely different way, both in terms of story-development and mood.

This landmark of Japanese silent film era was lost for fifty years until being rediscovered by the director himself in his garden shed in 1971.

Surveillance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409345/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/Surveillancemovieposter.jpg
It's not quite a surprise that Lynch's latest Production enterprise is one of the more tense movies that I have seen in a long, long time. Written and directed by his daughter, Jennifer Lynch, Surveillance has all the makes of an intense murder mystery/thriller as you, the audience member, are walked through the events that eventually lead up to the crimes that are being solved. But, of course, it's not your everyday murder mystery.
Definitely more linear and less absurd than Lynch's usual fare, Surveillance is a brilliant character piece that definitely had me on the edge of my seat at times... No, not in a scared way, but in a cringing sort of way... A good cringing sort of way. The reveal is a little hokey, but the end is so well constructed that you forgive it almost immediately.
I would say that this is a must-see for genre fans.

Up (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1049413/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/disney-pixar-up-movie-poster-2.jpg
First off, I have a few grievances to air:
Why, Pixar, WHY do you orchestrate your advertising in such a way as to REPEL me from your feature films? Cars had me believe that it was nothing but redneck drag-racing fare and here with Up I couldn't understand WHY a grumpy old man and a cherubic rube would cause me to run out to the theater... This is the second time that I have had no desire to see a Pixar film at the movies that I honestly wished I had!
Up was amazing! It was funny without being pandering. It was tear-jerking without being manipulative. And it was absolutely STUNNING without a flaw. Easily one of my Top 3 Films of 2009, Up has a little for everyone... From cartoonish antics that made me giggle to whimsical fantasies that made me smile and sigh, to genuine characters who made me cry... It's been a while since I've felt so sad/happy/inspired by a single film, and Up did just that. It's fun, adventurous, and absolutely charming. HIGHLY recommend it.
5/5.
I'll second Chrono's rec. on Surveillance. good stuff ;)

i agree that pixar markets their films poorly.
ratatouille, up, and expecially wall-e looked like complete shit from the ads i saw ... each film was fantastic. i guess they feel they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator (morons)
on the other hand - i did think Cars was complete shit... but thats just me.

So I'm NOT the only one! And the thing is, I'm a SUCKER for animated films! So it should be EASY to market to me!!
Another case where it happened: Coraline. Based on the marketing, I had NO INTEREST in seeing the film, but I absolutely loved it. Some of the artwork had my jaw dropping at some points.
Did you have a similar experience? The ads just made it look Alice in Wonderland-like, which bothered me because I had read the novella and the bright-eyed wonder definitely betrayed the macabre little world that Gaiman creates in his book... The movie DEFINITELY captures the creepy atmosphere, though. Which reminds me... I also recommend Coraline (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327597/).

Stunning. Macabre. Definitely true to Gaiman's tale. Could have done without the sidekick, but it works out in the end. Highly recommend. Which I had seen it in 3D.
All 3 of those films, Surveillance, Up, and Coraline make it into my top 5 of this year, along with Observe and Report and Inglorious Basterds. Looking back, it's been a damn good year for movies.

Surveillance was OK but nothing amazing especially the ending, I just didn't buy it. It was just a rehash of a lot of stuff from the 90s. By the numbers/throw in a twist typical thriller. I never want to hear that fucking Violent Femmes song again after watching it. Not a terrible movie but nothing worth lumping that much praise on it. Boxing Helena was a lot better and showed more promise aesthetically of leaving her father's shadow.

Ken Russell's The Devils (1971)

http://www.iainfisher.com/russell/ken-russell-devils-28.jpg
This film is so many things. An irreverent, pointed hack-job of historical account (not unlike this year's Inglourious Basterds). A politically-charged drama. An horrific display of primal madness. But in essence it is a mind-blowing monolith of vicious, insane genius. Easily one of the most uncomfortable, disturbing films I've ever seen.
Frightening in its implications, it's sure to move even the most thick-skinned, thick-headed viewer as it locates, then prods, then mutilates the area in which religion, love, madness, corruption, and redemption converge. Intermittently gorgeous and repulsive, but always outrageous, I'd say this film is for everyone, and especially for those with a confused, opaque (or perhaps obscured) worldview. But not everyone would realize that, or even make it through.
The Devils is grotesque and blasphemous, even prurient in its execution, but exalted in its mission.

Hausu is a cinematic fun house of childlike imagination. Completely out-of-its-mind, and an absolutely singular (and often virtuosic) work of horror, comedy, and melodrama. Every moment of the film is another delightful experiment; colorful, hyper-kinetic, and the most fun you're bound to have movie-watching. Supposedly conceived to get dwindling audiences excited again about Japanese cinema, it's certainly enough to reinvigorate nearly anyone's love for film.
Eureka's Masters of Cinema series has already released an incredible edition of this movie (R2), and Criterion is supposed to be doing it stateside at some point this year.

FINALLY got around to seeing American Zombie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765430/) and I thought that it was great. I would say that it's probably more "dark comedy" than actual "horror," but I thought that it was a blast. Another master work by auteur Claire Denis, and just like many of her films is completely entrancing. A story of individuals, the inability to communicate and love, and how that can affect us like a disease, one which can be overcome even if (or perhaps especially if) the change seems impossible (the disease, in this case, is illustrated in cannibalism, the reason this film has been so sadly derided). The film is structured in opposites, each character painted with polar attributes and allowed to suffer and love on their own.
It is a challenging film, and even to describe it only as I did above would be reductive. There is an astonishing style. Sex acts, given their ambiguous role, are framed in ambiguous close-ups; overlapping limbs and crevices and canvases of naked skin. The soundtrack is there, but doesn't intrude. And we are given performances of absolute abandon (especially from Béatrice Dalle, which is important considering her character).
Trouble Every Day is bold and violent, yet haunting and tender; a film that probes the grotesqueness of individual suffering, and does it bravely.

I watched this last night on a public access tevelvision station. Being someone who has always enjoyed graphic design, typefaces are something I find intriguing. This documentary on Helvetica covers the history of the typeface, and interviews the designers who used it a lot in the 1960s when it first became popular, the designers of the 1970s who chose hand-drawn fonts as a way to battle Helvetica and it's sorporate users, the grunge typographers of the 80s, and then back to the young designers of today who think Helvetica is somewhat nostalgic. The entire thing got me thinking about why I love Helvetica, and I have come to the conclusion that nostalgia is why I love it too. It reminds me of the ads in my mom's old Women's Day magazines. Altogether very informative.
Highly recommended for documentary and graphic design fans, but I think anyone could enjoy it.

Very interesting movie. The concept is actually really great, and the execution makes you feel realllly icky by the time the movie ends. There were actually a half dozen middle ages, assumedly Christian ladies who walked out before the first sex scene because they didn't like the movie (read cloning is bad, mmmkay?). But in all honesty, Vincenzo Natali is in the upper echalon of Canadian horror writers and directors for me.
The acting is spot on. David Hewlett, from Cube plays a pretty good role, and I have never seen such chemistry in a horror movie than that of Adrian Brody and Sara Polley. They were really, really great together. Adorable, and able to pull of being friends, lovers, and fighting like dogs.
The effects were freaking amazing! Both digital and otherwise. But what do you expect when Greg Nicotero is on your SFX team?
If you need more reasons to go see this there is nudity. So go buy your movie tickets. :P

Wow.
First, thanks for the recommendation, V and others who watched this movie. This is a perfect little indie horror movie; it's everything that movies like 1408 and Identity could and SHOULD have been. A great little mind-bender with awesome writing, flawless direction, and amazing acting, especially from Melissa George, our heroine.
What I really liked about this movie is that I initially thought that this was going to be one of those faux-intellectual horror films that are ultimately disappointing and predictable... HOWEVER, even when I THOUGHT I knew what was going on (thanks to too-revealing marketing), this movie still surprised and shocked me. I don't really want to say too much, but suffice to say there were a few moments that actually made my jaw drop. GREAT movie. HIGHLY recommended.

It's quite a shame this only went straight to DVD because it totally kills the majority of action flicks coming out of the US. I felt like I was back in 1990!
Straight up old school action with no gimmicks or self referential bullshit. This has given me faith that there's still hope for the action genre. Michael Jai White has some really impressive moves and is the first action "star" in awhile I can actually dig I hoping to see more things from him like this. If you're an action fan definitely check this one out.

Theres so good fighter cameos in that too:
Kimbo Slice. Bob Sapp, Mo Smith and Gina Carano..
If you like that you might wanna try the Undisputed series..
Number 3 is suprisingly good. Number one is a bit uninteresting.
Undisputed I - was basically a fictional/names have been changed what if film about Tyson if he wa forced to fight for money in prison.Despite a decent director (Walter Hill) and 2 'name' stars (Ving Rhames and Wesley Snipes) its pretty average..
Undisputed II - Well this was a typical no name straight to video sequal (though I do have a soft spot for Michael Jai White). Basically, boxer sent to prison and is forced to fight - loses - then realises he has to do MMA to win..
Undisputed III - Now I liked this a lot in a trashy way. It's real old skool/80's/Bloodsport/Tournie fight film and get this the bad guy from number 2 is the star. Its like if Kickboxer 2 starred Tong PO and he was real sorry for raping Mylee and killing JCVD's dog and all.
The fight scenes are fun with different styles and over the top gymkata-fu with the odd submission thrown in..Basically, I enjoyed it in a retro kinda way..
I presume you already seen Black Dynamite with Michael Jai White - its fantastic...

So I saw the movie The Runaways (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1017451/) the other day...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/runawaysposter.jpg
...And say what you will about Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, but they put up AMAZING performances as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Incredibly well-done, this movie is a fantastic bio-pic and haunting look into the short-lived career and stolen childhoods of The Runaways. It's a fantastic character piece and and definitely an engaging film. Michael Shannon, who plays Producer Kim Fowley, does so with the right amount of sleaze and art.
My only complaint about the movie was that it was too short - I wanted more...
So I went ahead and checked out...
Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216731/)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/run.jpg
What an amazing documentary. Directed by Victory Tischler-Blue, bassist #2 for the band after Jackie Fox quit, Edgeplay is an incredibly well-done and honest film told through depicted through interviews with Vickie Blue, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, Kari Krome, Sandy West, and Kim Fowley. Interesting, sad, disturbing, and ultimately engaging look into the lives of teenage girls who were taken advantage of by their Production Company. It's too bad that Joan Jett was not a part of the film - My only complaint with this one is that, again, I wish that it was longer.
Both movies are HIGHLY recommended if you like The Runaways or if you're interested in good, solid music bio-pics or documentaries. Don't let the presence of teenie-boppers Stewart and Fanning fool you - They did an amazing job.

OK. Wow. Quite possibly the most fun I've had on a random Netflix Rental since we picked Murder Party (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0878695/) randomly out of a hat...
Low-budget BBC schlock that is an absolute BLAST, Evil Aliens never once takes itself seriously and delivers a truly enjoyable slapstick gorefest. I found myself chuckling outloud more than once. It's sort of like Feast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426459/) with a lower budget, more silly, and... British.
HIGHLY recommended - V, Roshiq, et al: I think you'll get an absolute kick out of this.

Agreed. I watched this eariler in the year and was impressed. I was expecting something alot weaker and distilled, but its a decent movie and Caine puts in a great peformance. I noticed a few people on here have watched and enjoyed this film recently. Tragic considering this is a lottery funded British flick and British film funding is set for heavy cuts over the comming years.
Dead Man's Shoes is the best example of a British revenge flick though. I'm guessing you've probably seen it, but if you haven't check it out. That goes for pretty much anyone out there who hasn't seen it too.

Wow. Just - Wow.
The words "stunning" and "mesmerizing" barely do this film justice. I had heard that this movie was getting rave reviews, but my raised hopes did not even meet how phenomenal this movie is.
To tell you the truth, I was torn about Darren Aronofsky prior to seeing this movie - I found Requiem for a Dream to be incredibly bleak, but a piece of art in its own right. Pi I found interesting, The Fountain I couldn't stand, and The Wrestler was incredibly disappointing for me. But something that I can grant Aronofsky is that he is definitely a director with a distinct point of view, and every film has its own directorial style...
Black Swan is no different - An incredibly intense slow-burner, this character-driven psychological thriller is completely different from Aronofsky's previous works, this time taking a page from Hitchcock. Black Swan is dark, deeply disturbing and passionate, truly a film that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Coupled with the striking backdrop of Swan Lake, this character piece is at times horrifying and breath taking. Quite frankly, I haven't seen Natalie Portman this astute. Ever. Hands down, this is the best movie of 2010.

Aftershock (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1393746/) (2010)
A heart pounding epic human drama, with its title being interpreted quite literally and referring to the emotional and psychological scars of the earthquake that continue to affect its victims even generations after the event.
The film opens in 1976 with the Tangshan earthquake, which lasted just 23 seconds, but which leveled the city and resulted in a death toll of more than 240,000. The plot follows a family caught up in the horror, with father Fang Daqiang being killed while trying to rescue his children, leaving his wife Li Yuanni in the unthinkable position of having to choose between saving either her young son Fang Da or daughter Fang Deng.
By spanning several decades, it does a pretty good job of developing its characters in convincing fashion, and the story is engaging, moving & boosted by a decent script and some very solid acting.
The film has been submitted to the 83rd Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film. I really hope at least it gets the nomination.
Highly recommended to all here. Specially NE, CG, PD and V, don't miss it.

The Chaser (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190539/) (2008)
The Chaser is an intensely mesmerizing and keeping on the-edge of your seat experience. But more than that I should say it's a devastating experience...that I truly felt at close to the end of the film. The film is based on a real life serial killer in South Korea, who was convicted in 2005 for murdering 20 people. The film starts with a dirty detective turned pimp (Jung-ho) who is in financial trouble as several of his girls have recently disappeared without clearing their debts. While trying to track them down, he finds a clue that the vanished girls were all called up by a same client whom one of his girls is meeting with right now. He begins to look for her in that client's mentioned location of area & during the search, Jung-ho even able to catch that man (wearing blood splattered shirt) in an alley. But just after that the police takes control over the situation. The police suspects & Jung-ho believes this man is the killer or abductor but there's no significant evidence in their hand except his utterly misleading confession. And from that point of the film The Chaser becomes more intriguing the more watch with all the twist & turns till the final credit rolls.
It's not just another crime drama about a serial killer and some guys chasing him; there's comedy of errors in the way the police and politicians are portrayed, there's strong emotional content that grows around the little girl of a prostitute who doubts something happened to her mother, there's sufficient psychological thriller element that comes through the way the killer messes with the minds of the police and last but not the least there's the shattering finale...as in the way everything ends.
A MUST SEE FOR EVERYONE!

A super Indie entertainer & great horror comedy that will most probably become a cult hit like Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland, but this time it'll be for the slasher fans. You'll find hillbillies, stupid college kids, local sheriffs, insane killer, weaponry as chainsaw & hatchet...all typical slasher elements with a chain of comedy of errors, where each error results a gruesome death. The cast did a good job but specially Tyler Labine played as Dale steals the show from everyone.
This hilarious slasher ride deserves a wide scale release around the world.

I'm actually pretty upset that The Town wasn't wasn't up for Best Picture this year - I would say that The Town is my second or third favorite movie of the year (definitely second to Black Swan, though possibly third to Despicable Me, which just makes me incredibly happy)... Could be that I'm biased; I'm from the Boston area and get a certain delight from watching actors who can get the damn accent right (it's not just about dropping your R's, by the way)... Or it could be that this crime drama was a really thrilling character piece with characters whom I honestly cared about. Jeremy Renner is utterly brilliant (definitely deserves the Oscar nod), and Rebecca Hall is incredibly sympathetic. And I don't care what people say about Ben Affleck - While he may be limited, he's talented within his sphere. And apparently a great actor, too.
I loved this film - I was on the edge of my seat, intrigued the whole time. Highly recommend it.

Fascinating documentary that explores the "truth" around the urban legend Cropsey, the alleged boogeyman who kidnapped and terrorized children in Staten Island New York, which transitions into the actual conviction and trial of Andre Rand, who was accused of kidnapping multiple children in the 1980s.
Chilling and horrifying, the movie follows the families and friends who banded together to search for the missing youths as well as Willowbrook, the abandoned hospital that created the myth around the disappearances. There is some truly horrible, and sad found footage.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/UninvitedGuest.jpg
A beautifully crafted & twisted Spanish thriller that revolves around Felix, an architect who has just split up with his girl-friend and finds himself alone in his huge mansion. One day a stranger rings the door bell and asks to use the phone. Felix reluctantly lets the man in & permits his request. He leaves the man to have some privacy. When he goes back into that room he finds the room empty and he can't understand how the man left without making a noise? It seems he just vanishes! Or is he hiding somewhere in the mansion? But Is it possible to live in somebody's house hiding all the time where you can feel his presence but can't see him anywhere?
Although it started like an interesting Hitchcockian thriller but at the end it turned out more than that or any other recent psycho-thriller movie.

In the meantime I highly recommend The Mutations (1973) which stars horror stalwarts Donald Pleasance and Tom Baker. In terms of its side plot it doffs its cap to Freaks but its main plot is more along the lines of "organic horror". The two elements work really well together-a must see for any fans of Freaks.Plus on another level-the plant scenes are very surreal so it works very well as a visual experience.

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh11/RubberSoul28/1924971020A.jpg
*SPOILER ALERT*
Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) is an American soldier who goes west to the Colorado mountains to escape the Mexican war, and become a mountain man. After learning how to live off the land, settling down and even forming a new family, Jeremiah is made to lead a search party by the US Army and trespasses on a sacred Indian burial ground. The natives retaliate by slaughtering his family, and he sets off to get vengeance on those who killed them.
Directed by the great Sydney Pollack (who worked with Redford on several other great films), the movie takes on a very slow pace, with a minimal of dialogue. The breathtaking cinematography of the gorgeous landscapes are among the finest of any film.
Highly recommend to everybody this under seen masterpiece.
Scarecrow (1973)
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh11/RubberSoul28/scare.jpg
Scarecrow is a phenomenal film. It boasts fantastic performances by Al Pacino and Gene Hackman (who are both at the top of their game), wonderful direction (most notably in director Jerry Schatzberg's use of long takes which fits this film perfectly) and brilliant writing with deep, complex and most importantly 'real' characters.
Hackman plays Max, a recently released convict who dreams of moving to Pittsburgh to open his own car wash. Pacino plays Francis an ex-sailor who plans on going to Detroit to meet his child for the first time. The two become friends and bond while hitchhiking and in a manner similar to 'Midnight Cowboy' their odd realationship begins.
The one and only complaint I have about Scarecrow is, sometimes the scenes were cut short a bit early. One scene in particular (I won't reveal as it is a major spoiler) could have had so much more emotional resonance had the director let it go on a tad bit longer.

Really liked this film - Had a great narrative and was a fantastic character piece. The script is actually quite minimal, but the performances are so strong and the environment so vivid that you hardly notice.
This is a slow-burner that focuses on character, emotion, and the world it creates. Definitely dark, but I like this angle of the vampire mythos.

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587707/)

Utterly captivating and well-constructed "documentary" on street art and the manufacturing of art as a consumer product... Documentary is in quotation marks because it is speculative as to how much of the film is a true documentary and how much is an elaborate prank perpetrated by Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Thierry Guetta.
I believe that the movie truly started out as a documentary by Thierry Guetta, though the latter half wherein he transforms into Mr. Brainwash, I believe this persona was created with the help of Banksy and Fairey to comment on how the reproduction of art still creates a stir amongst the consumers and how owning a piece of a Persona is more important than the trashy art itself. Also, it's poking fun of self-indulgent and/or derivative artists... I love the references to Warhol and his commentary on mass production of art.
Ultimately, I found the finished product to be utterly brilliant. HIGHLY recommended.

The Killing Room-I suppose it is best described as political but I don't want to give much away. What makes it great is how you are lulled into a false sense of security with this film-when you feel relieved it then attacks you as it progresses. It's quite alarming and VERY relevant to the current climate.
Timecrimes-great time travel horror-the scope may be a bit small but it makes up for it with a captivating plot and it is very rewarding as the pieces all fit together.
The Borrower-great horror comedy that will suit anyone who likes macabre humour. It really is laugh out loud funny I could have watched it for hours and I was gutted when it finished you really do want to see more of it.

FINALLY got around to watching this movie and... Wow.
To say that I was impressed - To say that my jaw dropped a few times - To say that that held some of the some of the best performances that I've ever seen... All understatements.
As it's been mentioned, part of what makes this movie so incredibly powerful are the intense and gripping performances by Min-sik Choi (absolutely chilling) and Byung-hun Lee (agonizingly biting) - I was particularly impressed with the latter, who shines as the haunted victim, resolute on revenge. His fierce and unblinking demeanor was horrifying as he descends into tragic anti-hero-dom.
In terms of direction, each scene was filmed with deliberate ease. The writing and the story and the ending - oh God the superlative ending - All well done. This tale unravels slowly, with delightfully shocking peaks and climaxes until the pinnacle scene of perfect vengeance... My jaw did truly drop a few times... Great suspense and action interlaced with poetic tragic drama - Definitely an epic Korean Revenge flick, up there with The Vengeance Trilogy, though less playful.
Fantastic film - HIGHLY recommended.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/coisaruim2006.jpg
A family decides to leave behind the stress of city life and move into a huge house in the countryside that they recently inherited. And the country is a vastly different place than the city, a place where superstition runs widespread, the local priest still performs exorcisms, and there may just be a thread of truth surrounded in the strange, disturbing tales told about their new home.
The film takes its time to build mood and atmosphere. Rather than slapping you around with shock after shock or spooky encounters, the film builds its characters carefully while slowly raising the tension. It is a film where more is hinted at than demonstrated, a serious look at the possibilities of the supernatural. The storytelling is more concerned with the consequences of the supernatural tales & beliefs that the family is dealing with in a new place than it is with exposing the supernatural itself. But when the supernatural forces involved finally becomes evidently real that investment in character pays off beautifully.
The camera work is beautiful and the entire cast & characters believable through and through.
Overall, this is a subtle, slow burning tale of a haunting, set in rural Portugal with a tragic finale.

Punishment Park (http://eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/punishment-park/) (1971)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/PunishmentPark.jpg
Few months back while I was looking through some IMDB lists then I first get to know about this film & it made me instantly pretty curious to give it a blind watch as early as possible. At that time I just found the title & the premise very interesting.
Now, after watching it very late last night without knowing much about the background or the content, Peter Watkins' Punishment Park just straight way made me think & feel I was watching something very real...a genuinely horrifying documentary that was probably banned or hidden all these years or people didn't like to talk about it for its shockingly true & appalling subject matter. Therefore, in this regard, this is surely turned out one of the best Shockumentary I have seen so far.
This is a troubling document from a time when the US seemed about to tip into chaos and the powers that be would have gone to unimaginable lengths to maintain their control. But what gives Punishment Park its quite substantial punch is the absolutely palpable air of paranoia that pass through in every scene. The film flips back and forth between one Corrective Group's miserable odyssey across the desert and the next Group's tribunal hearings (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067633/quotes). One of the best aspects of the film is those heated tribunal sessions.
"I don't have to call you what you are, you know what you are...better than I do."
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punishment_Park#Technical_notes), Mr. Watkins allowed his cast to mostly speak their minds to each other and the cameras, and that creates a fascinating time capsule from a time & gave birth to a tale of a generation when average citizens actually cared passionately about their country and were willing to go to extreme lengths for those beliefs & doesn't care about the consequences.
Of course, now, some 40 years on, it might be supposed that the political context of Punishment Park is out of date - but Watkins' film still has its relevance, as the US again & again caught in endless foreign conflicts resulted the untold horrors of US detention compounds in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan. Looking back on history reminds us of the differences and similarities between then and now, but still Punishment Park shows that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Punishment Park is an extraordinary film, very much thought provoking and deeply depressing.
A must see for everyone.

Darbareye Elly aka About Elly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1360860/) (2009)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/AboutElly.jpg
A group of 3 married couples (Sepideh-Amir, Shohreh-Peyman, Nazi-Manoochehr), some with children, visits to a seaside town & stays in a seaside villa for a short break. The only single people in the group are Ahmad who has recently separated from his German wife and Elly who is a nursery teacher to Sepideh's child. Sepideh (who brought Elly in the trip) has organized the whole trip, as well as playing matchmaker for Ahmad and Elly.
After the very first night, in next morning Elly wants to go back home because of her worried mother but Sepideh doesn't let her. Sepideh and Shohreh went shopping, men were playing volleyball and little girls were playing at the beach with Elly while the other kid (Arash) was swimming. After a while, the girls came and reported to their fathers that Arash was missing. The film really takes off just at that point when, in an apparent attempt to rescue the 'missing' kid, Arash from drowning, Elly disappears. Was she drowned too or did she just leave...but why would she do that?...whatever actually happened to Elly?
Iran's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language category in 2010 (though didn't get the final nomination) is a very nicely crafted suspense-drama that interestingly play with its characters, somewhat in a 12 Angry Men fashion where lies, suspicion & speculation slowly starts to digs off some dark sides of each others very human nature.

The Stone Tape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone_Tape) (1972)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/TheStoneTape2.jpg
Combining aspects of science and superstition was a frequent & fantastic theme in Nigel 'Quatermass' Kneale's works and followed by that, his 1972 BBC Telefilm The Stone Tape concerns a team of scientists who move into their new research facility, a renovated Victorian mansion that has a reputation for being haunted. Especially, one particular big empty room that they wanted to make their computer room turned out spooky! Investigating & sensing something wrong in the place; they gradually learn that the haunting is a recording of a past event stored by the stone in that room. Believing that this may be the key to the development of a new recording medium, they throw all their expertise and high-tech equipment into learning how the stone tape preserves its recording. However, their investigations serve only to unleash a darker, more malevolent force.
Directed by Peter Sasdy (Taste the Blood of Dracula & Hands of the Ripper) with a good cast of actors, this is somewhat a thinking person's horror film, very low on body count with zero gore and not so much concentrated on jump scares but still effectively delivers an intelligent ghost story. Even, since its broadcast on BBC Two as a Christmas ghost story in 1972, the hypothesis of residual haunting - that ghosts are recordings of past events made by the natural environment - has come to be known as the "Stone Tape Theory" by para psychological researchers (Info source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone_Tape#Cultural_significance)).
But sadly, this critically acclaimed & so much significant gem of magnificent 70s Horror somehow didn't get much attention from the genre fans. Most probably for its plot structure & unavailability of DVD, I guess.
Like a M.R. James story, this fascinating tale of supernatural strangely grows spookier minute by minute, particularly when it comes close to its chilling final revelations.

Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan aka The Ghost Story of Yotsuya (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0155278/) (1959)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Yotsuya2.jpg
Based on Yotsuya Kaidan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yotsuya_Kaidan), the most famous Japanese folk tale or Kaidan of all time, this wonderfully creepy gem of Gothic J-Horror cinema was directed by Nobuo Nakagawa (the maker of 1960 masterpiece Jigoku aka The Sinners of Hell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jigoku_%28film%29)). Considering its time of release, it was surely quite unbelievably creepy & gory for the audience back at that time. Along with great Nakagawa's fantastic style of film making where we can see Bava like continuously changing colorful screens & brilliant use of lights & shadows, this film also comes with some awesomely creepy set pieces, i.e. freaking ghosts rising from the ground or peering down from the ceiling!
Like its more than hundred years old original story (which mainly written as a Kabuki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabuki) play), the film is mostly filled with typical Asian melodrama where characters grows in the 1st half but 2nd half strikes with violence & ghostly encounters.
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Yotsuya1.jpg
Overall, a must see for the fans of Gothic horror & J-Horror.
Although the story has been adapted to film many times in Japan but this is generally considered the finest screen adaptation of the story as well as Nakagawa is considered to have been Japan's first great horror film director. Besides having provided his critically acclaimed Jigoku and this best version of the Yotsuya ghost story, he also directed Kaiden hebi-onna (Ghost Story of a Snake Woman, 1961), Onna kyuketsuki (Lady Vampire, 1959), Kaidan Kasane-ga-fuchi (The Ghost of Kasane,1957) & Borei kaibyo yashiki (Black Cat Mansion, 1958)....Damn! These all movies have now become hard-to-find films in most of the parts of the world & also in the torrent sites. Acclaimed video-distribution companies like Criterion or Blue Underground very much need to release A complete Nakagawa Horror Collection asap, IMO.

Knowing (2009) Smashing and hard hitting supernatural sci-fi thriller starring Nicholas Cage in one of his more likeable roles. I'm no special effects hound but I found what's used in this genuinely jaw dropping. It has a very diverse collection of elements to it so you may not like them all depending on personal view (especially towards the end) but I was completely gripped throughout and I strongly recommend it to anyone who may have avoided it like I did. Great for getting in the mood for the apocalypse!

The Man from Nowhere: Awesome Korean Action movie. Imagine Tony Scotts Man on Fire being given the Korean action treatment. Everything that Korean cinema does so well is delivered. Its a simple plot and perhaps not as well orchestrated as something like Oldboy but it still has bags of heart. Acting is amazing but subtle while the action scenes are intense and brutal. Pacing is spot on, everything is spot on. Best action film I've seen in the past few years, highely recommend.

I'd say I was comparing it to Man on Fire moreso than Oldboy. The only reason I mentioned Oldboy was to point out that The Man from Nowhere was based around a much simpler premise, but that didnt detract from the heart of the movie.
It's hard to make a recommendation for a Korean action flick without, at some point, mentioning The Vengeance Trilogy...

Just picked this up through Warner Brother's archive series. Despite them fucking up The Devils release, bless them for recovering forgotten films like this one.
This is a remarkable pre-Code gem. Featuring a rugged cast of characters, and an amazing, shining performance by Dorothy Mackaill, Safe in Hell is almost whimsical, but ultimately anchored by brooding and intense undercurrents, and paced with increasing tension. The last act, then, is a heart-breaking gut-punch. Highly recommended.

Along with A Woman Under the Influence, this is the best film about mental illness ever made. Spare, haunting visuals react and contrast with claustrophobic, chaotic, and terrifying sound design; more-or-less objective visuals and more-or-less subjective audio give a harrowing and heartbreaking insight to main character Peter Winter, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and is searching for his daughter. An incredible film that gets better with repeat viewings, as the audience is charged with deciphering what is real and what is a product of Peter's fractured mind. Highly, highly recommended.

The Skin I Live In (2011) I was already a fan of Pedro Almodovar (Bad Education, Talk To Her, High Heels, All About My Mother) before I saw this possibly his first horror film so had high expectations-it far exceeded them! This is based on a book (forget the Spanish author at the moment) like a lot of his films and draws inspiration from Frankenstein but this is no reinterpretation of the story it goes in a different direction and Almodovar fans like me can enjoy joining the dots to his previous films. Nevertheless this is a jaw dropping film and you don't have to have seen any of his previous films to get it. This is a film to watch in awe-awe at it's ideology, it's subtle performances (especially Antonio Banderas) and its fluidity. If Insidious and Trollhunter don't count as 2011 films then I choose this as my fave horror or any film of 2011.

Me too - To be honest, even after the great reviews, I kept thinking to myself, "Great story but this movie has GOT to be boring..." But it's anything but boring. I couldn't tear my eyes away from it... And the climactic scene is so incredibly intense and cringe-worthy... Definitely some images that I won't be able to get out of my head for a while.

Just posted this in last seen movie thread, figured I'd post it here. Definatley one to check out for those that havent seen it yet. Pretty solid violent drama, I'm sure a fair few of you will have seen it already, but those who havent should check it out.
Tyrannosaur: Gritty drama directed by Paddy Considine. Solid peformances from Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman, telling a story of two people trying to come to terms with their lives. I thought it drifted towards cliche at times and maybe wanted to be more thought provoking than it actual was. That said, it holds itself together and has plenty of impact. It's not a movie that is gonna appeal to everyone due to the violent and miserable nature, but its a solid movie that survives on some fine acting and plenty of well delivered scenes. 7/10 type of movie that genre fans are gonna enjoy.

I really, really liked this movie. I did. I liked the concept of taking the super hero origin and putting it in the hands of teenagers who just want to use it to mess around. You have some well fleshed-out characters, and some really solid acting, especially from Dane DeHaan who plays the troubled, unhinged, and eventually genuinely creepy Andrew. The movie creates a realistic bond between these three boys who are exploring the powers mysteriously stowed upon them from an unearthly discovery... There's the conflict of Good vs. Evil, especially when it comes to the freedom to do almost everything... I loved the acting and the direction (though, again, as I've said before I'm a HUGE sucker for found footage films)... I also think it's highly original; it's NOT a super hero movie... It's NOT a super villain movie... It's NOT a teen drama... It's NOT an action film... yet it takes bits and pieces of each to create a truly unique character piece that I think that many people on here will enjoy.
Highly recommended.

The Whisperer In Darkness (2011) finally saw this long awaited HP Lovecraft Historical Society film. As with The Call Of Cthulhu (2005) this is another labour of pure love that instead of making into a silent movie they have aimed for black and white 50s sci fi horror. This is an outstanding piece of work all shadowy cloak and dagger intrigue, secret alien invasion plot, surprising contemporary dialogue and plenty of mythos to sink your teeth into. I actually can't wait to watch this again as I know there are things I may have missed such is the intricacy of it's delivery with at times a glorious atmosphere of dread without any concessions to the mainstream at all. Though having said that this may be a great film to get a new audience interested in all things Lovecraft. I truly hope it succeeds.

The Mutilator (1985) I saw this years ago in the horror section in HMV as part of Vipco's Banned films series. Thankfully I didn't buy it as Vipco were notorious for releasing savagely cut versions of films. So after forgetting about it for years then I saw elvischrist mention it as an awesome film last year I decided to finally track down a full uncut version (you can't believe some UK releases that claim to be "uncut" as they are not always truly uncut) anyway this definitely was and what an absolute blast I had watching this. It is an 80s slasher film so essential viewing for any 80s slasher fan. But what makes this stand out from the crowd is it's genuinely spooky low budget atmosphere. Granted the acting may make you hate the characters but the death scenes are so violent and OTT it's hard not to give it a round of applause at it's unique style. An adorable and addictive film I will treasure :)

Outstanding thought provoking sci fi-thriller (with some horror and film-noir elements thrown into the mix) with familiar faces Kiefer Sutherland, Melissa George and Richard O Brien. This manages a rare thing in that by the end you are not left scratching your head despite some of it's mysteries remaining in the ether. There are some very jaw dropping special effects, an intense brooding atmosphere, tons of gripping suspense and handles the mind-expanding concepts beautifully. A Rare gem and higly recommended.

The Cabin In The Woods (2012)
This is made out of pure unadulterated love of horror, there are so many references to other horror films it's impossible to count. But despite this this still manages to impress and stand alone as a great movie in its own right. There's plenty of CGI enhanced (like in The Midnight Meat Train and Adam Chaplin) gore to satisfy hounds like me but there is also a multi-layered mystery to give it some substance. In a way this film defines the genre whilst offering it up as fresh and genuinely exciting. A much needed shot in the arm for those who feel slightly jaded as this cleverly turns any approaching cynicism completely on its head. Manages to be both graphic and subtle which really is quite an accomplishment as it is backed by some thrillingly suspenseful scenes. Can not recommend this enough :)

Uhm. Ok. Wow.
I was really trying NOT to keep my hopes up for this one because I was worried that I'd be disappointed... But to be honest, this is truly one of those rare movies that remind me of what I absolutely love horror, gives me hope for modern horror movies, and just satisfies me as a fan. Simply stated, it's a horror movie lover's horror movie.
I love the nod to pretty much every movie trope ever (though my boyfriend kept pointing out the very obvious and prolific Raimi nods which drove me nuts but that's OK)...
I have a slight qualm over the ending, probably just because the scenes leading up to the end were so ridiculously AWESOME, GORY, SCARY, and esoteric, I didn't want it to end... And also I think this is one of those movies that's almost too clever for it's own good, meaning the story is so odd, unique, and dark that no ending would be satisfying.
HOWEVER...
I was just pontificating over how incredibly neat it would be if they released an extended Blu-Ray edition that had 4 alternative versions, based on what they were about the "choose" in the basement (the conch, the Pandora's ball, the necklace, the movie reel, the musicbox) - Would there be any difference in the ending based on there choice? I think it would be a neat way to extend this concept of modern sacrifice having to be based on the victim's will - If their will is different, does the world end? o.O The geek in me wants to find out.
Oh. OH. And I cheered out loud when Sigourney Weaver stepped in the final scenes... GEEKGASM!!!!!!!
I ALSO totally and absolutely geeked out to the nod to Portal - I mean... As a horror-loving console player, I've pretty much just wet myself with excitement over that.
Ridiculously good. Also one of those RARE self-conscious movies that isn't annoying and pretentious. It was very fun, very well-directed, and acted, and thoroughly enjoyable.
HIGHLY recommended.

The Stone Tape (1972) Thanks to Roshiq for the rec.
This is the kind of thing you need to go into without knowing anything about it as it relies a lot on mystery and suspense building up to a quite spectacular finale. The acting and production is very 1970s British TV as are the social attitudes of the characters. But what makes this stand out from the crowd is that it is actually very scary, very effective at building up tension and a cumulation of horror rather than jump scares, plus is very profound and thought provoking. The sort of thing that will keep you pondering it for days afterwards. There's some truly fascinating concepts explored here and are delivered in a very down to earth non-patronizing way. I want to watch it again already as I'm sure a second viewing will enhance my enjoyment. Highly recommended but don't expect voilence and gore this one's all about fear factor :)

Sinister (2012) Went into this without knowing anything about it and that's the best way to approach this. What makes me recommend this is that it makes considerable effort to try and be scary and it succeeds very well. It uses reasonable characters, subtle pacing and score remarkably well to ratchet up the tension. Again like all the best horror in my opinion it aims for a cumulation of horror. There's a lot happening here, it's thought provoking and has the kind of ending that will haunt you for days afterwards. Soak in the mystery and enjoy the journey this takes you on.

What really stuck with me was the "found footage" - It really creeped me out... I haven't seen many Killer POV horror movies (yes I know there are a LOT of them - Just not typically my genre), so I found all of the footage to be genuinely disturbing and unsettling.
...
Next recommendation from Chrono:
The Revenant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1336006/?ref_=sr_1) (2009)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/revenant_zps0365a6d7.jpg
I have to say - Wow. I had low expectations going into this based on a fairly mediocre review from Rue Morgue... I assumed that it was going to be just another stoner zombie buddy comedy... But it surprised me by having quite a bit of depth.
Taking a LOT of influence from Return of the Living Dead, The Revenant starts off initially as a gory comedy, but then it dissolves into a very dark, Nihilistic, and cynical place... While not a perfect movie (it does meander a bit in the middle), the end really ties it all together... And it's a damn good ending.
Not to mention, the soundtrack is killer and I can't wait until it comes out in a couple of weeks.
HIGHLY recommended and would love to hear feedback from others who've seen this.
4.75/5.

I definitely agree with you. I thought the footage was creepy. It was unsettling and disturbed me for a little while after.

No Mercy (2010)
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p433/sanjidparvez/NoMercy1_zps4c088f13.jpg
Synopsis:
A chopped-up body of a young woman is found near a riverbank. Korea's top forensic investigator Kang Min is brought in to look into the cruel, horrendous crime method. His medical advice and a young detective's deduction lead to the arrest of a prime suspect - an environmental activist named Lee Sung. When Lee's confession almost wraps up a seemingly easy but strange murder case then actually the real story begins; as the suspect Lee starts to play a cat & mouse game with the coroner Kang Min and his involvement moves from merely being the man supplying the pathology report to a desperate guy whose daughter untimely appears to be missing also.
From Chan-wook Park's Vengeance trilogy to recent highly intense serial killer-thrillers like THE CHASER or I SAW THE DEVIL, over the years Korean cinema has gained its reputation worldwide for showing an immense amount of bravery in terms of what it wants to tell the viewer with unpredictable storyline & shocking resolutions near the end of a movie; when the audience literally had their hands clasped over the mouth trying to hold back an irresistible stunned reaction. And this debut film from writer-director Kim Hyeong-Joon, can be classified as another addition to those 'edge of your seat movies' from Korea. It's like a true fanboy's good-honest tribute to his favorite master director's one of the greatest films or even it won't be too much exaggerating to say, it's like an unofficial, new entry to Chan-wook Park's Vengeance series just without having Mr. Park on the director's chair! But still considering everything, I won't like to put it on the same level with Park's vengeance series. Most of the part, it was like another decent version of THE CHASER but you have to wait till the twisted finale comes with a heart-breaking and devastating revelation that fairly reminded me of one of the most highly appreciated films in Park's Vengeance saga. But again I like to add overall it's not may be as much great as any of those Park films but obviously a very entertaining, delightful watch that will try best to shock you hard at the end. So be prepared who ever haven’t seen it yet.

I watched Rosemary's Baby for the first time the other day. I didn't think I would enjoy it, because I'm not religious and I don't find religious horror scary. However there is something special about Rosemary's Baby; maybe its because I find the vulnerability in Mia Farrow's voice intoxicating.
The ending was so utterly and brilliantly bizarre that I have to highly recommend this movie.

I loved it too! Joe Swanberg's attempt to convince Ti West that he should make commercials, because, you know, that's where you can really be artistic -- hilariously self-aware. Good suspense, and a couple of the kills caught me off guard. I'm looking forward to watching this again.

I'm going to have a hard time writing about this movie because I don't think that I could possibly do it justice.
In short: This is a perfect, beautiful little movie about love and technology and relationships... Relationships between two people... And our cultural relationship with technology... A non-dystopic near future that is beautiful and transhuman...
So many things to love about this movie - The writing, the warm glow of the direction, the characters - Acting by Joaquin, Scarlet, Amy Adams... The costumes, the world-building, the beautiful and melancholy music - I just loved, loved, loved this movie...
I also loved how it touched on technology - We're in the near-future but it's not a dirty dystopia - Sure, we're still plugged into our devices, but it's not about how technology is taking over - It's about our relationship with technology (both literally and figuratively in the movie) and it also explores the philosophy of AI & Turing... Touched on some very interesting science fiction themes and has a very well-done conversation with the audience...
I know that was a really mushy review but honestly, I loved loved loved this movie - I definitely recommend it, especially for science fiction-lovers who were intrigued by its premise.
5/5.

I'm not gonna put really well-known movies because chances are, most people here have seen them. I think all of them are available on Netflix.
Exam - A really intense and unpredictable thriller about 8 people locked in a room who are trying to find the answer to a question they don't know in order to get a prestigious job. The scope is limited to just the one room, and a lot of the thrills come from the dialogue and characters' interactions. It's of my favorite thrillers.
The Den - Probably one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, which might be because it hits so close to home in my generation. The Den takes place entirely on a laptop, and it's about a woman who witnesses a murder on a chat roulette site. It goes off the deep end a little bit at the end, but it's still a really effective and memorable movie.
Absentia - This one is directed by Mike Flanagan, who directed Oculus, so if you liked that, you'll probably like Absentia. It's about a widow whose husband went missing 9 years ago, and he suddenly comes back, claiming that a monster in a nearby tunnel is responsible for his absence. Absentia is a good example of what's come to be known as "quiet horror", where not much really happens, but the dark themes make up most of the scares.
Pontypool - A zombie movie with a really bizarre twist. Pontypool isn't particularly scary, but it's definitely original and quiet intense. This takes place entirely inside a radio station, so a lot of the action is only heard over a speaker and not actually shown in the movie until the last act. It starts out very slowly, but you definitely want to stick out the first half. The movie takes a 180 and becomes really intense very quickly, so the slow start is worth it.
Grand Piano - Out of all of Elijah Wood's movies (except Lord of the Rings, obviously), this is my favorite of his. Grand Piano is about a famous pianist who has to play a nearly impossible piece without messing up or else he'll get shot in front of a huge audience. You're going to have to suspend your disbelief quite a few times throughout, so if you're looking for realism, skip this one. Grand Piano is perfectly over-the-top while not being too campy. It's suspenseful, unpredictable, and really fun to watch.

"Maniac" was awesomely creepy I'm so glad to find someone who watched it since the movie has more of a cult following. I even did a tribute review about it on my blog. As for the Conjuring that's also awesome love the jewelry box scene. It's like The Babadook and Oculus which have a similar theme of a haunted house movie that's actually scary. The recent Evil Dead was pretty good too, I was surprised by how much blood they used.

Hey guys! Long time no see!
I'm not new to horror, BUT I am new to what isn't mainstream horror, so Halloween, Friday the 13th, Elm Street, Child's Play, etc. I'm familiar with, but I'm really hooked onto horror now and just finished 100 Feet and Amityville Haunting, the gormer was pretty good and I just loved the cheesiness of the latter haha!
I also just signed up for Horror Pack, so I'll be getting a horror grab bag each month, :)
On point though, I'm throwing a huge horror party this year and am stocking up on movies but aside from new releases and rereleases of the 'top 5' horror franchises it's pretty dry here, so I was wondering what everyone's top suggestion would be, your favorite flick, your most inspiring etc., lemme have 'em!

Welcome back! Glad your love of Horror has grown. It NEVER stops!
Suggestions? Gladly! My favorite movie is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1974. If you haven't seen it yet, please do. It's unforgettable and is definitely a seminal work. Of course, it's a very popular film so you have probably seen it, but you did ask for a favorite.
Some horror flicks that I consider essential viewing that might not be on everyone's radar...
Attack The Block - Way underrated sci fi horror action!
Sexy Killer - Great Spanish Slasher with a wonderful female villain
Hands of the Ripper- My favorite film from Hammer Studios
Session 9 - Psychological horror done perfectly
Pin - A deep, serious and disturbing Canadian flick
Martin - George Romero's vampire tale is fairly well known but I don't think it gets the respect it deserves.
I hope you check out some of these titles and let us know what you think of them.
I could give you a few hundred more... lol, but it's a forum and I ::big grin::::devil::just don't wanna be THAT guy.

some pretty good ones in that box you got, several of them I love. Sharknado doesn't count as horror I think, but they are some fun and goofy movies to watch. Part two was ten times better than the first, if not for story, just in all the cameos alone! part four even had some texas chainsaw massacre cameos, and a specific mention to the series, as well as Christine was in it too.

An extra added thing; Which horror film would you recommend to a non horror fan in an attempt to get this person into the genre?
Excellent question!
I'm going to contradict myself here. First I'm going to say, if someone is not into Horror, I wouldn't try to get them into it. I've heard from a couple very beautiful people that Horror films (the Horror they know personally) are not a good thing, in that it brings some bad things into people's lives and their world, that it wasn't beneficial to them, and it brought some evil to them, to put it bluntly. To me, obviously all Horror films are not the same, and not all people's experiences are the same, but having said that, in regards to some Horror, I don't disagree with the people I referenced. And like most everyone, I limit the Horror I watch.
My contradiction is in naming the Horror I might actually recommend to specific people to introduce Horror films. I'd recommend Alien, which I think has a lot of worthwhile messages.

I'm not sure if that's a contradiction. After all, "getting them into the genre' and the way you try to do that can easily come across as an attempt at prosyletizing. Which would probably work counterproductive.
