I don't have a lot really, I just want to see the great shots from you fine folks here at the HDC. Hmmmm, ok, here's one I took a while ago. Silhouette of a hummingbird in mid-flight.

Very nice shots of the sunset against the cityline and behind the tree.

I love the colors of the sky in the street-lamp one. Good eye for detail, Urge.

thanks ..

the 'behind the tree' one was a funny story ..

it was taken on a highway at top speed with my wife driving.
I was shooting between her face and edge of the driver side window .. just a tiny area ..

cant believe it worked out - let alone catching a bird in the tree.

I don't seek them out either. Just a couple years ago when I was 12 or so my aunt asked my mom what I'd want. My mom said "Well, he likes Eminem" but I think she misunderstood, because every year since then I've gotten a new M&M item or two from her.

you'd be suprised .. they do that all the time around our place .. they lie there like drunk little lords with all 4 legs hanging down - it's pretty funny.

yesterday - the coolest thing ever happened ..

I've been a Minolta guy for many years. (could never afford a Nikon)
My old SLR was a Minolta, and my 1st good digital was a Minolta.

when i bought my Digital-SLR ... i still couldn't afford a Nikon so after reading a lot of literature comparing the Nikon, Sony, and the Cannon ... i went with the Sony (alpha 100) as it compared fairly well and gave more bang for the buck.

Turns out Sony bought Minolta and the alpha 100 is all Minolta technology (with Zeis lenses)

so ..

one downfall of the Sony was that i wanted a 50mm Portrait lens. For the Cannon and the Nikon .. its about $100. for the sony it's about $400.00 !!!!

(the sony came with a 70mm and a 300mm)

so on a whim ... i tried the 50mm from my old Minolta SLR - and the bloody thing worked ! so i have that and the 210mm lens i already had for the Minolta .. plus - the external flash from the Minolta digital is compatable as well !

i dont know if there is anyone on the planet that'll appreciate this - but it was such a sweet suprise for me ..

i may not have been able to get the Nikon i wanted (yet) but there sure was some sweet fringe benefits to getting the Sony.

so did i until i used the flash .. that seems to be the secret.

i also played around with ISO, aperature, speed, etc ...

but the simple moon picture was done with the flash on - that was the only thing extra.

That's quite strange, because a flash only illuminates what's 20 feet uin front of you.

Using a time exposure you can get a nice shot of the moon.

i find it takes :

luck
opportunity (which often requires luck)
a decent camera (which can provide opportunity)
technical know-how

i've begun to take courses so i can get the most out of the digital-slr i have ...
i dont have the time to figure out what everything does by myself - even though i bring my camera everywhere i go

To be honest the camera thing isn't always through. I think the best stuff i've taken is is with a piece of shit SLR i used to have. Granted I was able to process and print them which gave me control from start to finish which really helps.

Personally I think it just takes an eye for it. Naturally ability helps but the more you take the more you will train that eye and also you will start seeing things and how they might look good through the lens.

I do think this supercides a decent camera and to alot of extent technical know-how. Granted you need to under stand the basics but how hard is that. (i'm talking about natural light situations here - in a studio you are sooo right.)

Opertunity and luck is a bit debatable. Granted you can be luckly and have waht they call 'happy accidents' but at the end of the day professional photographers don't go into a job hoping they will get a good shot.

So advice to Dante'sInferno - i would say sure get a better camera but most importantly just take pictures. You will learn by your mistakes and improve.

By the way i'm far from a good or decent photogrpaher and i'd love to be one so take a bit of what i say with a pinch of salt.

.

i forgot this point.

a sense of composition is very important.
it's a basic most people dont seem to possess.

as far as luck not being a factor ... were you planning of following the guy around until he fell asleep besides his lawnmower ?

of course luck is involved in a lot of photography .. the perfect moment, facial expression, sky, etc, etc, etc ...

if you're talking studio pictures - very little luck is involved - it's all technical expertice.

if you're talking about random interesting photography - luck is often the biggest part of it.

please dont ask me to provide examples again .. it would be far too easy.

Ferox13
04-27-2008, 09:03 AM
No i Agree its defianlly a factor but the other ones i listed are more important.

. were you planning of following the guy around until he fell asleep besides his lawnmower ?

In all fairness - i wouldn't call that a good photograph really..it is a funny pic though.

But really if Luck was such a huge factor then the best(most acclaimed and/or) photographs would not be taken by professional photographers/artists.

because ...... they know how to exploit that luck.

there have been a ton of amazing photographs (subject wise) by amateurs .. but because they didnt know how to compose their photos, or their equipment couldnt get them close enough - or the settings werent right because they didnt have the technical know-how, or they just had no avenue to get them published - get exposure. or they're simply not interested in sharing.

pros are prepared. the do research - know where to look and what to look for ..

but for the thing to happen (the weather is right, the bird or whatever appears. appears, the person makes the perfect facial expression to convey the mood of the photograph as beautifully as possible) ... that is the luck factor.

urgeok2 makes some great points.

If you really want to improve your photographs then get a book out on the basics - learn how basic composition work, use the rule of thirds - get a basic under standing of depth of field. Also (i think this is the hardest bit) try learn how good lighting works (in the long run this is very complex) but there are a few basic rules you should follow..

Also look at other photographs and see try see what makes them good. Try avoid spectacular subject matter but more mundane ones...

I hope this helps - i don't wanna seem like a know it all, i'm far from it but I was pretty interested in the subject and i'm just passing on the little that i know.

My Dad gave me his old Kodak SLR the other day. i haven't been able to experiment with it yet but I used to do a lot of digital photography at school.

My favourite piece of advice is to know the rule of thirds. makes composition a hell of a lot easier.

thanks (i didnt think those were terribly good - just more of a 'here's what i've been doing this summer')

I went all out and bought the Nikon d300 .. probably more camera than i needed but i used someone else's Nikon and fell in love.

I'm still learning how to use the Nikon .. it's quite a curve... especially the flash i bough - a big semi manual Metz hammerhead... not easy to use right out of the box.

I'm reading good things about the Canon and the Sony Alpha700.

(my previous camera was a Sony Alpha100 and it wasnt bad at all ...

the Alpha 700 is about 1/3 less than the Nikon and it compares favorably.

i believe you can get good digital slr's for $500 - $700 these days.
double the price when you start adding lenses, etc.

Thanks, Urge.

I'm mostly impressed with the volley ball action shots... My little digital cannon is pretty much shit for shutter speed (been playing around with the feature today trying to take pictures of a running, squirming cat). Then again, this is more of a point-and-shoot than anything else.

Nikon's the name that I'll probably get - My last manual camera was a Nikon and by GOD it was a good camera so I've decided to stay brand loyal. I'll look into the other two that you suggested, though. And you're right - My price range right now is probably $500 - $700 (if I could pay off my credit cards and start actually saving of course - ha). I was just looking at the Nikon 6.1 MP (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8139169&type=product&id=1158323379076), which is the same price as the Sony Alpha. I'll have to do some research. And, like I mentioned, be a little bit more disciplined with my spending. :o (I've gotten to a point where I am making WAY too much money to have the credit card debt that I am currently toting).

she had no clue. her first words were "fuck off.' then "shut. up." then "are you serious?" about 10 times, then finally "yes" and she didn't stop talking about it all night. The ride home was crazy.

My camera was acting up so bad all night. Outside the apothecary I replaced by batteries and then my camera just kept turning off until we walked away from the building. the camera worked fine until outside the Dead Zone house, then said low on battery and the flash wouldnt work. Outside the Oban Inn my camera said low battery and i couldn't get more than about 3 pics. walked across the street far enough away to not get any pictures and it was fine again. stupid ghosts.

Tommy, Val, Derek and I are doing a Halloween tour of Fort George in October, and maybe the Haunted Forest walk in Ancaster before then. It's so much fun.

As some of you may know I'm a qualified Junior Advanced Open Water Diver with PADI (I'll lose the junior when I'm 15. Then I'll be able to go down another ten metres ((Currrently, I can do 21M)) )

Anyway, in Tenerife we did 2 dives. One with Sea Turtles and one looking for Rays (didn't see any). Anyway, here's a few pics.

Here's me giving a thumbs up, when I suddenly realised that's the sign for "Ascend". I changed it to okay but only after the pic was taken.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/ferretchucker/IMG_5683.jpg

Here's an anenome (What Nemo lives in). Pretty cool to look at.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/ferretchucker/IMG_5691.jpg

Me and my Dad, who's also an advanced open water diver, looking at one of the smaller turtles. He was searching for food under the rock.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p255/ferretchucker/IMG_5598.jpg

And finally, our good friend the Triggerfish. That thing would be one of the most dangerous things in the ocean if it were bigger. That thing that looks like lips, is a beak with razor sharp teeth and it's incredibly territorial and aggressive, continually biting our cameras and loose straps.

Here's a couple pictures I found really interesting. My wife and I were walking through the park and throwing some older bread out to the geese and ducks when we saw this guy. He ate fine, seemed to be doing ok, but if you look you'll see that his top beak is ripped off. You could see his tongue reach out and grab the food he was eating, really weird, I had never seen anything like it. Just thought I'd share.

Nothing was visible while I was taking the shot so I was pretty surprised by the result. I'm a raging skeptic so I'm sure it was just the combination of warm B.C. air and the remaining snow on the ground, It's not near any water.

Still lots of fun and eerily coincidental since I can make out so many features.

Marroe - Great pics! I especially like the last 2.

Dante - I'm so glad you finally got your digital camera. I know you've been wanting one for a while. Great pics, and hey, grandpa was kind of a hottie! :D

More great pics Dante! Interesting thermometer in the Dr. Pepper one. :) I love that pic though. And thanks for another one of Grandpa! I like his eyes (although you can see them better in the one with the medals you posted earlier). :) And the one looking up at the sky through the trees makes me feel peaceful.

well, here they are- Chris's article didnt make it to the paper - the editor double booked the interview and Chris is more of a horror guy... so the photos i got are exclusively mine :)

easy going and personable guy - he asked me where i wanted him - the room wasnt very good for a picture so i jokingly suggested he get all sexy and lie on the bed ... and he goes .. OK !

yeah - it's a love hate thing for me ...

i feel bad for some of the animals (not all - because its a huge zoo and the bigger animals have safer healthier lives where they are)

on the other hand its the only chance to see these creatures.

i think a lot of these animals survive a lot longer in proper captivity ...

no poachers - no starvation .. I guess it depends on the zoo - i know some zoos are cramped nightmars in the middle of cities - the Toronto zoo is out in the country - tons of space

Very nice! Were they from Kyoto?

Also, is that yellow car an 86 Corrola?

The first shot is on a mountain near Tsukuba, I can't remember exactly where the second one was, it was near Nikko and the third is at the famous Nikko Circuit track. It's actually an 85 Corolla owned by a super friendly drifter named Isao. Good call on the car though.
