Two of the "New 52" titles from DC.
Not sure how I feel about this apparent retconning of the entire DC line, considering some of the titles were at really great points before they've gone ahead and done this - though, I have to say thus far what I've seen holds the interest well enough.
I've thus far read the new DETECTIVE and ACTION #1s.
What they're doing is kind of reminiscent of Marvels "Ultimate" line, but probably more parallel to the "Heroes Reborn' titles of the 90's.
Not too sure if they'll just keep things this way or re-establish everything and kind of work it into the standing continuity...quite strange that DC seems to be doing this with every title.
Action sees a very different side of Superman, whereas DETECTIVE has maybe the best first issue I've seen in some time (if you get one of the two, my reco is this) I don't think fans of the series would be disappointed by either.

Also read the latest "Sweet tooth" which I think has fallen rather flat for a while now.

I also just read those 2 from New 52...wasn't too impressed with either, but wasn't exactly disappointed either.

I don't really bother to keep up with current comics so I can't say if they're any better/worse than anything else that's been going on lately - I prefer catching up on all the classics I've missed - but they both just seemed really empty to me. The stories were solid enough, and both had endings that'll make me want to read the next issue - especially Detective Comics. That last panel asks some questions...not sure where they're going, but it could either be really cool, or utter shit. But neither of them really seemed to tread any new ground...maybe I was just expecting too much from the first issue, but I would have liked to see at least something out of the ordinary.

And I was really expecting more from Grant Morrison on Action Comics. He's such a great Superman writer - All-Star Superman totally changed my opinion of the character, brilliant stuff - but this just seemed really generic, especially for someone as crazy and talented as Morrison. Not bad of course, but he's capable of way better.

I'll can't really see myself getting into much of this new stuff, but I'll probably check out a few more for curiosity's sake.

By the way, have you read the new Catwoman yet? I haven't checked it out personally, but everything I've heard makes it sound like a total shitshow...

Ive got some old Donald Duck and Nancy and Sluggo comics from about 1950, but one I remember from that era was one called Adventures Into The Unknown. A really graphic, scary comic before they started the comic code in the early 50's and tamed the comics down. After that there wasnt much to them.

I'm a huge fan of the Lenore comics, JTHM and bear - anything that has the same kind of dark humor. I've tried to read superhero comics and even though I love the artwork, I just can't get into them.

I've been trying to find a new series I might like - Does anyone have any reccomendations???

If you like comics, but not the superhero genre, have a shot of the walking dead. The story differs from the show so you're not re-reading stuff you may have already seen, if you have been watching that. The writing and artwork are spectacular. It's probably my favourite line of comics out just now.

To respond to the topic of the thread, I'm currently reading through the walking dead (I was a late starter) and Blackest Night as well.

The latest "Walking Dead".
New character introduced...one who manages to unbelievably kick two of the major players asses while unarmed then drops some HUGE story-changing infor...Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes here.

I've also read an issue of "Avengers Academy" which in my opinion is actually a better read as it's big-brother title at this point. Never before have characters that have been introduced from the ground up into existing "superhero" continuity, been something I'd much taken notice of, but yeah I guess it's in the writing.
Some really cool mystery stuff with future/time travel going on too.

Green Lantern - The 4th issue of the "new 52" title.
I have figured out something about this whole new 52 thing.
The storylines/titles that are "new" can be hit and miss. I love some, I couldn't be bothered with others. Though the ones that continued on with the existing continuity (such as the Bat-titles and Green Lantern) are rock solid.
I have not enjoyed this title so much in AGES.
I mean shit, Sinestro is back albeit unwillingly on the "good" side, and is practically the main character in the book now - redemption? Who knows...but the back and forth between himself and his, hm, assistant Hal Jordan who is no longer a GL himself is just brilliant.
I'd recommend the current series to anyone that's ever liked the book.

Suicide Squad - The latest incarnation of this title also under the "new 52".
Continuity of it's own it seems, though it bares a slight resemblance character-wise to the "secret six" title that finished up a little while ago. Deadshot, ?Killer Shark? and Harley Quinn are the major players here, as villains whoeither perform govt missions, or die.
Probably the BEST "new 52" title out of the self contained out-of-continuity storylines.

New TMNT series - Best it's been since the beginning.
Love it. Fans CAN NOT be disappointed by this one. Read it.

Batgirl #4 - Also "new 52" but existing continuity.
Great new villain in this one, even if the rest isn't all that noteworthy.
Probably my favourite bat-villain to be introduced since "Hush".

That's it for now, lots more to read.

No Hero.
UltraViolence, twists and turns but not really that great if you ask me.
I've seen better from Ellis.

Insurrection V3.6
This one I quite liked.
The story of a "defective" military service android that inspires a rebellion among his brethren. It's a nice, self contained story that doesn't have the need to flash forward or back or otherwise convolute the plot, it's simplistic but the core story keeps you wanting to read more.
Bit pissed when it ended after just four issues, but yeah, it was cool.

50-girls-50
Meh. B-Movie crap with scantily clad women.
It was "ok", but felt a bit like it was trying to be like "Fear Agent" and failing.

Red Skull - Incarnate
Not quite as interesting a read as "Origin" but an interesting look at the early exploits of the character that would become the time-spanning nemesis to Captain America.

Bring the Thunder.
Hm...it was "ok"...nothing great though, I find that the attempts at "superhero" type comics are pretty hit and miss.

Stories from Batman and Detective Comics featuring Batman's "new look" beginning with it's introduction in Detective Comics 327, May 1964. This was the dead of the Silver Age and it was obvious DC needed a new strategy to battle the new powerhouse on the block, Marvel. A hardcore Marvelite at the time I didn't appreciate DC's efforts to change without losing its distinctive character but many decades later I'm enjoying them now.

Just finished We3 by by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely (Aug 23, 2011)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/we3.jpg

I'm having a hard time deciding whether I liked this or not or not. It definitely hits you over the head with the pretty familiar scifi tropes of HUMANS: BAD, SCIENCE: BAD, NATURE: AT BAD MAN'S MERCY, WORLD: BLEAK... To be honest, those aren't my particularly favorite scifi tropes; I typically like my scifi more whimsical and less BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK.

I found the story profoundly sad and grim. And while clearly that was the intent, I couldn't help but feeling as though it was overly manipulative as opposed to a good, clean piece of scifi. Also, the writing wasn't really great. As I mentioned, it really does hit you over the head with the aforementioned topics.

Gorgeous art, but not my favorite graphic novel.

Read a new one by Mark Millar called "SuperCrooks", first issue.
Storyline revolves around a mid-level villain coming up with the theory that he and his cohorts would actually start succeeding if they relocated to a place not known for it's large superhero population - Spain.
Aside from the introduction to the characters, not a lot more happened in the first issue but it was a good introduction, the main character is pretty likeable and the dialogue is well done, and pretty funny.
Yeah I'll probably read this one as it comes out.

Speaking of Millar, now that I got the final issue I read through "Kick Ass" series 2. It was ok. Can't say I really liked it that much, and it didn't as such feel like a complete story as the first one did - If they're going to base another movie on this series they're going to need some more material.

Is he an enemy?

I just got done reading the latest "Walking Dead", and things manage to fuck up, yet again. Good read.

Also the "new 52" latest issue of Aquaman.
This is probably the best and most accessible Aquaman title I've come across, though I didn't mind the last one (sword of Atlantis, in which a new aquaman was introduced, likely erased from existence in this new 52 line though...).
This issue (re)introduced the Black Manta character - and damn, he is COLD.
Looks as though his character will have a little more depth this time around too. Not my favourite New 52 title, but one of the better ones, and a good run for the character and the atlantis thing so far.

Global Frequency Vol. 1: Planet Ablaze (2004) by Warren Ellis

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/globalfrequency1.jpg

Description from Amazon.com: The Global Frequency is a worldwide organization comprising 1,001 members, each with a specialized talent, which combats unconventional threats to public safety. Some of these menaces are the stuff of science fiction, like a cyborg warrior gone mad. Others are potentially quite real, such as an attempt to release lethal viruses in London.

Ellis creates an anthology of thrilling vignettes that are intriguing, exciting, with believable fleshed-out characters.

Definitely recommended.

What a fun little graphic novel - Great characters, fun plot, and doesn't take itself too seriously. I had a blast with this.

Description from Amazon.com: Good battles evil, and the world hangs in the balance! Resurrected by the Shroud of Turin, the zombified Dr. Jameson intends to finish what he started 150 years ago - destroying the earth with a giant space eel! Standing in his way is Dr. Ong, a would-be pastor-turned-scientist who now works in a government research facility infamously known as 'Creature Tech.' Aided by an unlikely cast of rednecks, symbiotic aliens, and a CIA-trained mantid, Dr. Ong embarks on a journey of faith, love, and self-discovery.

I mean - How could you NOT want to read this???

Highly recommended.

Battle Scars - 6 part Marvel mini-series coming out of the events of "Fear itself".
Ok, so they've found a way to create the Ultimate/Movie Nick Fury in the existing Marvel Universe...and his friend Phil Coulson, as seen in the current Avengers related films. That was basically the point of this otherwise pointless story.
...but, really - pretty unnecessary.
Really obvious attempt to start making money from the movie enthusiasts.
The fact that old/white Nick Fury will likely fade out because of this, is a bit shitty.

I absolutely recommend it. Incredibly well-written. Hill is so talented; I loved Heart-Shaped Box - One of those rare books where I really got attached to the characters... 20th Century Ghosts was a great collection of really vivid vignettes (I think he writes more vignettes than short stories)... haven't read Horns yet.

I initially thought this volume was a little schizophrenic; the pace was a bit faster than the previous volumes; whereas previously a volume would focus on just a couple of keys and the Locke Kids' encounters with the "Dark Lady," this one lumped in quite a few... But it all came down to a fantastic ending; clearing hill and Rodriguez didn't want to become repetitive and ultimately the ending is brilliant - Looking forward for Volume 5 to come out.

Wow. WOW. I absolutely adore comics with vivid, interesting characters, and a strong narrative... And this has both of those elements - Reminds me a bit of Preacher; you have some really fascinating characters, all with a backstory, that peels back slowly - Each comic adds another layer to it.

I can't wait to get my hands on the next volume (just ordered from Amazon).

Honestly, this is HIGHLY recommended for horror fans, vampire fans, and comic fans of Preacher, Locke & Key, and the like. Looking for a strong story and strong characters? Look no further. I LOVE this comic.

It's cute, but definitely more geared toward young adults... Great artwork; like a well-done anime, but not really for me... I probably would have loved this in elementary or middle school.

I'm with you. I'm very inexperienced when it comes to comics; pretty much my younger brother, who's a comic devourer, just feeds me the occasional one that he thinks I'd enjoy. So going off of that, I'd recommend Watchmen, The Killing Joke, and Swamp Thing to start.

(So, on top of my recommendation of Locke & Key for you, I also recommend Preacher and American Vampire, just read the latter this weekend and thought you'd really enjoy it)

Fairly entertaining at first; really liked the concept of the red-hot killer of slashers... Ultimately, though (and I can't believe I'm saying this); for me, just pure t&a isn't enough... It got a bit redundant after a while... I would say, horror fans - definitely check out the first couple of volumes... Other than that, it's just so/so.

This is on my list. I was waiting on the movie that I thought was going to star Megan Fox. Who knows what happened to that project. I've only read one issue of Hack/Slash so far. That was a crossover Annual I believe with the Suicide Girls. It was pretty good I thought. But it was the cover that made me purchase the issue.

If anyone has any recommendations to help me kick off, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Must-Reads Classics:
Miricleman by Alan Moore - my pick for the greatest comic series ever. WAY better than Watchmen, IMO. It's like, if you took Dr. Manhattan's story and stretched it out over about 20 issues, minus the politics. In short, its about a man, becoming a god, and how he copes. Plus, plenty of great twists and turns along the way. Neal Gaimen takes over for Moore, so the story continues on fairly solidly, but Moore's run MUST be read.

Swamp Thing (Alan Moore) - A lesson in how comic books should be written. And it fits the forum. To me, Moore's greatest strength is taking a character that we thought was one thing, and turning him/her into something else entirely...adding dimensions (See: Miricleman). His Swamp Thing reinvented the character. Its should be taught in schools.

Sandman (Neal Gaiman) - It deals with the lord of dreams being caught and held captive for 70 years, and then "making his way in the world today). Masterful.

Animal Man (Grant Morrison) - Pretty much anything Morrison writes is a safe bet, the man is on a genius level. His Animal Man run is akin to Moore's Swamp Thing for me.

Preacher (Garth Ennis)

Batman: A Death in the Family - A bit of a guilty pleasure for me, for nostalgia reasons. I feel this was the most monumental story line in my reading era.

Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (Alan Moore) - The definitive "final" Superman story.

Future Classics
X-Men (Grant Morrison)
Powers (Brian Michael Bendis)
The Walking Dead (on fire right now, for good reason)
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: Hush
The Invisibles (Grant Morrison)
All-Star Superman (Grant Morrison) - the next definitive "final" Superman story.

The rest (stuff that keeps me reading today):
Locke & Key (SO good)
Fables (See: Locke & Key)
Thief of Thieves
Batman: The Black Mirror through Court of Owls (current)...get this!...its as good a Batman run as I have ever read.
Swamp Thing (current)
Animal Man (current)

I'd feel BEYOND confident recommending ANY of the above to ANYONE, and some (particularly the stuff at the top) triggers my snob switch if not read.

Some others I enjoy, but more as guilty pleasures:
Earth 2 (current...surprisingly good), Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE, Daredevil (current), Avengers vs. X-Men (yeah, I know), and Bendis's most recent Moon Knight run (I NEVER thought I would enjoy a Moon Night book)

Oh, man - I have a SERIOUS hard on for Megan Fox - Not gonna lie; if that comes out, I would buy a ticket to that, no question (regardless of how I feel about the comic).

And I totally agree with you on the cover - I picked it up from the library (checked out by a little ol' lady librarian of course) and I felt like I was buying my first porno. ;)

@Eman Resu - THANK YOU. I'm always looking for new comics and I haven't heard of some of those (and for those that I've heard of, you've reminded me to FINALLY check 'em out). Looks like my local library has both Animal Man and Swamp Thing. Bingo. :D

Wow - Maybe the best volume so far... I wasn't sold at first, but it gives a fantastically epic view of Christian Walker's origin. Wow. Truly and surprisingly dark and disturbing... I never read the original Animal Man run, but according to my boyfriend, he was kinda "lame" (heh)... Well this comic is moving to make Buddy anything but lame - This is an incredibly dark and disturbing universe that we're introduced to here with some graphics that really made my jaw drop... I think part of it is that I honestly wasn't expecting this to be a horror comic... But it really is.

Highly recommended. Thanks, J, for the rec. Can't wait for the next volume to come out.

If you can get a collected edition of "The last Days of Animal Man", that was a pretty decent story a few years back involving the "old" (that is pre-new 52) animal man.
Being as it's set in the future of the "old" DC universe, there's not a lot you really need to know there...but yeah I remember it being a really decent story.
Yeah he was always a bit of a second stringer/underdog, but a likeable character.

The new incarnation is well, the same guy just a much deeper, darker story.
One of my favourite "new 52" titles.

Was powers the one about the cops investigating superhumans?
Yeah I think I read the entire run of the first series.

I just read my first comic of the week.
The Walking Dead #100.
Gah!
Seriously, of all the things I've seen and read in this comic, nothing has made me want to say "fuck you very much" to the creator as this one issue.
Long time readers - Prepare to be more than a little upset.
Some chilling stuff here.
Of course, it's also the opening of what looks to be a pretty huge arc, so more TWD for us.
But shit...just...when you read it you'll know.

Also I don't know if it's just me picking up this vibe, but I'm pretty sure certain elements of the dialogue in this issue were Kirkmans commentary on how people reacted to the Michonne/Governor scene.

I just finished Detective Comics #858-860 a few days ago, which is the origin of Batwoman. I read #854-857 sometime last year. I probably won't get to the new series for a while until the single issue prices drop a bit. I wasn't going to mention it here but it does have monsters. That was the surprising part to me. The artwork is really good and I like Batwoman more than I thought I would. Kind of a realistic take on the origin of someone who could become a superhero.

Also, I finally finished the Ghost Omnibus vol. 1. The comic lost me towards the last 1/4 or so. The art quality dropped a bit and the story became more generic and seedy. I'm still going to check out the upcoming reboot later this year and maybe the older issue drawn by John Cassaday. But I won't get the other omnibus volumes after reading the wiki on what happens.

I don't have any other horror comics in my stack right now. There's a bunch of stuff I'm looking forward to picking up after I finish what I have. Horror titles like: House of Mystery, American Vampire, Rachel Rising, Vampirella, The Vault, Whispers, Girls, and The Last Resort. I'll probably start off with The Last Resort and Girls since I'm getting the collected versions of those. Plus The Vault which is only three issues.

Incognito: Bad Influences.

I've been picking up Fatale as it comes out and got hooked on Brubaker's noir style writing. Ended up getting both Incognito trades, and would even read his Captain America, despite not being a huge fan of super heroes.

Also, Saga by Brian K Vaughan is superb. The first trade came out last week I think it was. Would recommend picking it up and getting caught up before the hiatus ends.

I am about to finish American Vampire, Volume #1. 4-part series which deals with the origins of vampirism and evolution of a new kind of vampire species in America, as narrated by an actress and a writer. Written by Scott Snyder and Stephen King in two equal parts, I am finding it a gripping read so far. A different take on the vampire mythos. Recommended.

Just got done with the latest issue of the ongoing series of Hawkeye (#11).
I didn't actually think I'd like this series, the art is pretty rough and the character has been largely hit and miss in his solo outings outside of Avengers stuff.
However, there's some charm to it.
I like that it's standalone and independent of his other avengers/marvel associations. Very street-level stuff, even moreso than say daredevil.
Basically paints the character as a stuff-up/burn-out at this stage in his life, though there's something really down to earth about this series that I love...not much inner-monologue, not too much flashback/background or superhero type stuff, but enough is provided for new readers to jump on.
To me, the comic doesn't even LOOK interesting and I find it difficult to put my finger on what I actually like about it, but it's entertaining.
Just stories about a dude with an interesting past, getting by.

This issue I just read impressed me with very little use of words...of course being aware of what's been going on in the comic helps explain things a little bit...but I'll just say the entire comic was presented in the perspective of a dog that the title character liberated early in the series.
Shows the dogs thought process, associations and presents an interpretation of how the senses work.
Nothing weird or scientific about it, but I thought it was very well done.

Anyways, I'll just say it's one of the more solid Marvel titles out now.

Started on my collection of the "Gambit" title that's just been sitting around unread.
I was actually pretty surprised it has a bit of staying power.
Like the aforementioned "Hawkeye" title, it manages to stay clear of the characters team association quite well, and it's fine to read independently.
Love it when you don't get a thousand crossover events.
It's about well, thievery, backstabbing and misadventure...I mean it's not the best comic I've read all year, far from it - but it's entertaining, the character is true to form and a little more roguish as per his origins.
Might be worth a read if you enjoy the character.

Modern horror comics, not quite as god in my opinion, Walking Dead is popular, but I find it hard to read as I don't like the art work that much. 30 Days of night had some good series, and I always like the quality the way the comic is made with IDW, some great painted covers too.

Check out "Blood and Shadows", I think it's about the best horror title I've ever read.

I read through my regular bunch recently.
No huge standouts.
Though I also read through the last 5 issues of the current "Deadpool" run that I've been collecting, as it was a 5 part storyline called "the good the bad the ugly", I like to read those in a chunk.
Captain America and Wolverine feature as well.
All I can say is FINALLY...some actually dark, twisted, sad, and fucked up things are happening with this title - maybe the first time since the 90's series.
I'm sure they won't, but I really hope Marvel continues along these lines.

Read through "Avengers Arena" which is an 18-issue mini featuring some of the "younger" marvel characters introduced over the last decade.
Cast includes some New X-Men/Academy X, Avengers Academy, The Runaways and some newly introduced characters.

It's basically about an old (predominately) x-men villain called Arcade who kidnaps the young heroes, who all awake in his most recent iteration of "murderworld" which is like...his thing...usually theme parks of death etc.
Though he's had a bit of a power-up.

Anyways, one thing leads to another and the name of the game is for the protagonists to survive the lethal environment AND kill each other.
Yes. Similarities to Battle Royale.

Really a lot better than I thought it would be though, I enjoyed it.

This comic. I don't even know what's going on or how to explain it but.. it's beautiful. I have read the first two issues now, because of my love of Kelly Sue. After reading the first one, I had to tell everyone I know that they need to read each issue at least twice. I personally read them both three times. Once for plot, once for the poetry of the words, and the last for the art. Emma Rios has a better understand of page flow than any comic artist I've seen. There's one particular panel in the second issue where a characters hair wraps around the page, going outside of the box and onto the second page. A single strand of hair deviates from that on the first page and your eyes just follows exactly where it needs to be to see all the action.

It is truly a work of art.

I really want to read this.

...

Most recently, I read the first three trades of Saga, written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. I absolutely adore this bizarre space odyssey.

Also, the first trade of Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Wiebe. I absolutely ADORED this comic. If you're a fan of dungeon-crawlers and RPG's then this is a must-read for you. Well-written cast of badass female adventurers - I can't wait until the next TP is published.

Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction. This was a fun read. Not necessarily something that I'd continue (I worry that it'll get repetitive) but I like the fact that it's just about Hawkeye during his downtime. Little adventures. Personally, though, I'd prefer a Kate Bishop-centric comic.

Currently I'm reading East of West by Jonathan Hickman but I might wind up putting it down. Here's the Amazon description:

This is the world. It is not the one we wanted, but it is the one we deserved. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse roam the Earth, signaling the End Times for humanity, and our best hope for life, lies in DEATH!

I'm just not sure if I'm in the mood for something moody and abstract... The art is really stunning, though...

So far...

Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction - I read the first TP and was genuinely impressed... It took me a while to finally pick it up... I was worried that it would be exploitative and icky, but it's really not... It's about sexual awakening and empowerment - Odd and liberating. Interested to see where it goes.

North 40 by Aaron Williams - I picked this up because I'm a fan of Fiona Staples' art... Not a bad little work of horror so far.

Flex Mantallo by Grant Morrison - The hubby read it and loved it and desperately wants me to read it... I'm not necessarily the biggest Grant Morrison fan but how can I resist those muscles??

The Best of From The Tomb by Peter Normanton - The hubby says it's a pretty impressive and detailed tome that makes him want to collect the original comics.

I thought it started out pretty strong - A good little Southern Gothic tale sprinkled with Cthulhu... Gorgeous artwork, great creepy beasties (grimaced at least once with the creepiness)... But it felt abridged and it ended waaaay too soon. It felt incomplete.

Really curious to where its going and how the characters will interconnect if at all.

Secret Wars, MODOK Assassin and Carol Corps

I haven't read any of those...though kind of collected downloaded copies...which I might browse through.
I have to say, I'm getting really, REALLY sick of events.
Now what, they're going to do a "new 52" type thing and combine the ultimate and regular marvel universes?
Too much bullshit to keep up with - this crossover event is ridiculously stupid-large.
I mean back in the day, a crossover would be a standalone comic of around 12-14 issues.
Nothing else would get drawn into it, it was an event on its own.
It's just annoying now.

Lately, I've had a look at the first three issues of "Batman & Robin Eternal".
Like Batman Eternal before it, I find myself nearly immediately more enthralled than the other core titles running at the moment (Robo-Bat...no...), I just find everything better from the characters new and returning, the backtracking into the unknown past, the overall contained storyline.
I'm looking forward to reading more.

While on the Batman stuff...I find the "new" Bruce Wayne kind of interesting...I mean we all know what's going to happen...just a matter of when.

Also read the latest issue of Invincible, Robert Kirkmans "other" title.
This comic has been overall consistant, but goes off on a few too many tangents for my liking. It's always remained, for the better part, a good read.
This latest issue was the first part of a storyline called "Reboot?", that starts with the main character experiencing an event, then "waking up" to roughly the same time as the first issue of the comic, that is, 120+ issues ago - which is around a decade of progress.
As he only got his powers in the first issue, he has none of his existing alliances and knows things that he "shouldn't" so the dynamic between himself and his former friends and enemies is going to be quite interesting.
...This is one that will really pay off for the long term readers.
Not sure about new readers. Maybe?

Being a very old broad, I am reading and collecting Golden Age comics.

The series I am collecting is Blackhawk. I think that it is still around but the ones I am reading and collection come from the series beginning on Military in 1940 through the era of Quality Comics ending in 1957 and also some of the first ones in the DC Comics line.

The 7 Blackhawk freedom fighters fought Nazi's, Communist, mad dictators from all over the world as well as mad scientists and even threats from outer space.

I just love these comics.

cheebacheeba

There is actually a small element of those Blackhawk comics that survived.
A character called "Lady Blackhawk" was introduced to DC comics in the 90's (or earlier) and has served alongside a few of the superhero teams.
She's not superpowered though, she's a pilot and an adventurer, bit of a mercenary.

She's appeared in some pretty new DC comics as well.
Also the team "Blackhawks" was another fairly recent title.

Same symbol and all.
Though I suppose it's not really going to be the same vibe as the originals.

I read a shitload of titles
Same...still.

All New Wolverine
Yes, it's interesting.
X-23 was one of the more interesting "new" Marvel creations, have followed the character on and off since the NYX title.
Even if she's only the primary character until the inevitable return of the "real" Wolverine (unless that just stays as Old Man Logan after the latest crossover debacle) I find they've introduced a pretty decent storyline to throw her into.

Silk
Another of the more interesting newer Marvel characters. Totally weird how they brought her in...yet another crossover event more annoying than good...but she was the one good thing to come out of it, even though at the same time Kaine was (again) lost. I'm probably more interested in this character, but the ongoing title would benefit from coming across as a little less cutesy I think.

Secret Six
Been collecting that one for a marathon.
Not sure how the new title is, but the loss of the last title was one (of many) of the things that pissed me off about the "new 52" shakeup. Same as The Outsiders. The more offbeat, "bad" or "dark" type super-teams have always made for more interesting reading if you ask me.
While on that - for me, the suicide squad used to be great but the N52 version is just fan service wankery for yet another Harley Quinn vehicle. It's still "kind of" ok, but really not all that worh reading.
Though yes, Secret Six pre-n52 was one of my favourite comics, and I'm really holding onto hope that this new one is half as good. They really made CatMan a contender...hope they keep him that way.

I've been following the new Deadpool series.
Well, it's still not like it was in the 90's...seems like the more people get on board the more they turn DP into a comedy with a touch of tragedy rather than the other way around.
Though the character has had some good development, and there was a bit of mystery to the new series - it's been nice to see some "old" characters that have all but faded into obscurity playing semi-major parts again.

One title I'm actually quite enjoying is Marvels current series of "Illuminati".
Nothing to do with the previous storylines and series by the same name.

It's basically about a b-grade-got-lucky "villain" The Hood *
Who decides to recruit other b/c-list villains, some presently in operation some retired and reformed, to take part in a masterplan/heist that will elevate their status somewhat.
That's all there's been so far really, just set up.
This is just, the one comic I'm looking forward to the most in Marvels current line.

*who I actually find to be one of Marvels most endearing characters of the last decade...yeah, he's a "bad" dude, but he's not all that eeeevil...He's cocky, and ambitious, and just, a memorable character for me.
Check out his minis and appearances prior, most don't disappoint.

I don't know what to say without spoiling the entire concept...but lets just say, if there's any fans of "The Prisoner", you might like this.

Same here! Can't wait to see where DC goes next. I never left when the new 52 started but I did feel that some books didn't work
However some books were great. Specifically Batman, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing and Animal Man!

I'm currently reading Batman Eternal. It's a fun, fast paced Bat family book.

cheebacheeba

Oh yeah, I read through Batman Eternal a while back - a really excellent Batman title, stood well on it's own outside the DCU as per most of the Bat titles.
Very well written, just an overall really satisfactory story.

The whole "New 52" thing honestly pissed me off just about as much as the post "Brand new Day" Spider-Man titles (I think they're only just regaining their footing now, after this long)
The Batman and Green Lantern stuff, which largely continued their pre-52 storylines, were in my mind just about the only stuff worth reading.
Everything else just became like generic. The characters. The storylines. All so bland.
Erasing some of my favourite teams and characters was just a kick in the balls.
Clearly the whole project didn't play out like they wanted, which is why we have what I'll refer to as the REAL DCU coming back into play.

So have you read DC rebirth through?
If so...Damn, just that Barry/Wally scene huh?...very few times has a comic made me feel that way. Pure "from my childhood/teens" stuff coming back together in such a cool way...and how they took things right to the edge like that. Amazing.
Not to mention the giant GIANT reveal at the end.

darkdetective

Yeah.
The reveal at the end of Rebirth was terrific.

Also read Batman , Superman, Green Lanterns and Green Arrow rebirth.

Batman is my favourite character but Batman Rebrth didn't really excite me that much.

Superman Rebirth was interesting. Haven't read any Superman since Grant Morrison's Action Comics run so I was kinda confused but very intrigued.

Green Lanterns Rebirth showed some promise. Hope it's good going forward.

Green Arrow Rebirth was awesome. Green Arrow is my second favourite after Batman and I felt like he suffered from the direction of the new 52., apart from Jeff Lemires terrific run his series has been wonky. However now in Green Arrow Rebirth I feel like the character is back on track.

Can't wait to read more rebirth issues and then the new #1s.

Thanks to DCs Rebirth and Marvels Civil War 2 stating off strong, it's a good time to be a comic fan!

I believe it's only a one shot. Maybe they will have a continuation story in the future though.

Latest "Walking Dead".
This comic really needs to "thin the herd". Seriously. I've read and enjoyed it from the beginning but these days when I read it, I don't know who about half the characters even are. Short attention span is also in play, don't get me wrong...but yeah, I think this is an issue.

Have you checked out Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? The first trade is out, it's by the same writer as Afterlife with Archie, but a different artist, and it's pretty killer.

------

I picked up the first issue of R.L. Stine's new run on Man Thing. It's really pretty awful, hahaha.

Also picking through the first volume of Harrow County. Story is so far pretty interesting, the art is pretty fantastic as well.

Ordered a lot of magazines from CREEPY CLASSICS, mostly MIDNIGHT MARQUEE, early CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, MONSTER BASH and FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND from 1975-76 era, as well as a good copy of CREEPY #52. Really liked this when pre-Teen and it still holds up and also closes the gap in my collection.

If I was getting into reading horror comics, what would you suggest me reading first. I hope I'd be able to find it on amazon or in a book store.

I hope it's okay that I'm posting here. =)

There are tons. John Carpenter has his name on two volumes of horror graphic novels. I'll probably get them in October.

Check the online comic shops like MidtownComics and MyComicShop. You should be able to sort by horror comics.

Going through my mountain of oldies and finding the vintage Spider-Man ones still hold up quite nicely.

Been getting thru The Boys not sure why I haven't picked it up before now.

The Eibon Press adaption of Maniac was great. Looking forward to my copy of Bottomfeeder to arrive!

Sorry to take so long in getting this answered. Most of the originals are early-mid 1970's. The vast majority of the "Classic: are MARVEL TALES which still do just fine.

Got back from CHILLER THEATRE this past weekend. More MONSTER BASH magazines from Ron Adam's CREEPY CLASSICS and several EERIE/CREEPY back issues which are ones I was looking for to fill the gaps in my collection.
