I liked Batman and robin, quite a different feel to it.
I don't really like how sudden an inclusion Damian was since his "appearance" but hey...not a bad read, it's interesting.

Red Robin #1 just now - I actually liked this one better, surprisingly enough. Very good title...looks set to be a darker nightwing. I'd like to see Todd make a return and maybe redeem himself or at least pull a deadpool type change in direction.
I think JSA's Doctor Midnight or Drake will be changing their costume pretty soon.

Batman 687 - solid as usual...bit sad this one was, and Alfred...wow...
Scarecrow looks really badass in this issue too, one of the best interpretations I've seen.

No way I can list just one! Yikes.

Well, there are my staples: The Boys, Crossed, Mercy Sparx, Hack/Slash, Deadpool, Skaar: Son of Hulk (I can only stand any Hulk comic when Greg Pak is on it), Scalped, Northladers... then the odd mini or new series here or there.

I'm a huge Garth Ennis fan (can't wait for the Preacher HC!), Warren Ellis is great too... unfortunately Avatar can get a little pricey for me each week so I had to limit my number of books I buy from them, so now I just usually read No Hero where I can instead of buying it.

Just go to dcpp and stop being ripped off by the ever rising prices...even if you still buy half of the stuff you are and download the rest you're supporting the industry more'n they deserve.

I usually download back issues when I start getting into a new series then buy new issues from then on, but now that I'm opening my own store I'll just keep mine on the side on Wednesdays. :D

I haven't really noticed a lot of indie stuff going up in price, mostly just Marvel/DC. Now that they both have this stupid 1,000th issue competition going on, what little of their stuff was still worth reading is going to become even slimmer.

I just don't get why Marvel feels the need to drive down the market every twenty years (though this is when indie stuff really starts to shine).

Picked up and read:

Red Robin #1
Really good, I'm looking forward to the rest of it. Glad to see Tim still has something to do, the whole "Tim Wayne" part gave me chills.

Batman #687
That was incredibly sad, especially Alfred. Great issue, made Battle for the Cowl seem completely pointless. I agree with Cheebs about Scarecrow as well. I think this is supposed to be darker than the main title and focus on Grayson's solo stories.

Flash: Rebirth #3
The ending of the issue was disappointing, a cool twist, but I thought that the story would end up wrapped up in some way. The rest was pretty great and beautifully drawn.

Dylan Dog. It's Italian but should become a bit more visible in the States later this year as a film based on it starring Brandon Routh will be released. The comic has had well over 270 regular issues, 20+ special issues and a bunch of others since it first started coming out in 1986. If you're in the States, however, you'll only be able to find the six classic issues released by Dark Horse comics.

Best so far this week:

Batman and Robin #2.
The art is AWESOME...best I've seen in a long while...and yeah, having a "different" batman is not immediately what I like about it, but seeing Graysons journey and turmoil with it all is great. The kids a nutjob but I'm growing to like him.

Justice League - Cry for Justice #1.
So good. So damn good. Just go to your store, read the first 2 pages, buy it like you know you should then go enjoy the rest.
Superman more or gets told to fuck off, ha.
FUCK YEAH.

Secret Six - I knew little about most of these characters...something kept me reading, but the last 2 issues were just excellent. Read if you like stories about the "good" bad guys.

DC's doing very well lately IMO now that they've fucked off the big events for the moment.

Over at Marvel, I'm really enjoying Secret Warriors...the best title in the "dark reign" bit so far IMO, it's great to see Nick Fury back, and it' just a badass title.
Also, Avengers - the Initiative. Has been solid from the start and continues as such.

Just finished off the TBP collection of Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle.

Great stuff. The plot d compelling, and Tony's descent into alcoholism is incredibly well done. The resolution might come a little quick...but hey, he's a superhero. I guess that explains it to an extent.

I'd really like to see some elements of this make it in to the new Iron Man flick...I mean, I doubt they'd go down the whole alcoholism route, but the main body of the story had some really cool elements too: Iron Man framed for murder, malfunctioning equipment, awesome set pieces and tons of crazy villains.

Considering Justin Hammer + Whiplash have already been announced as the main villains, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they take some inspiration from this. Fingers crossed.

Freddy VS Jason VS Ash (series 2) - The Nightmare Warriors #2.
I didn't think all that much of the first FVJVA series, or even too much of the first issue of this one...though all that has changed with this latest issue, they're finally doing it right.
Not to overly spoil anything, but Freddy is in hell again, as is Jason by the time this second series starts. Now how Jason gets out is just, whatever...how Freddy gets out is quite interesting.
In this series we have a "survivors group" of both Jason and Freddy, an organisation running it that has an ulterior motive, we have Ash as always getting bought into any problems related to the necronomicon, meanwhile we have another group scientifically analysing the book for research about how to harvest the power of the undead into a weapon/army.
You get to see Freddy unlike you've EVER seen him before, trust me, it's worth it.
Oh, and there's a character from one of the movie series that looks to play a pretty major part that I think some fans will be happy to see.

Check it out, for once, the F/J/A thing is actually pretty good right now - they could totally relaunch the movies with an idea like this one.

Also - Chew #2
God, I just love this comic!
This issue "Eat a decomposing finger for the greater good", and a fucking GREAT fight scene.
Ha, the "flashback" type scenes are pretty good, kind've like something out of Six Feet Under, only more fucked up.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - Get this comic.
If you're after something not so run-of-the-mill, it's not to be missed.
Can't wait to get some feedback on this one.

Amazing Spider-Man #600.
Even though I hate the BND thing, this was a damn good issue. Check it out if any copies are still around.

Dark X-Men The Beginning #1.

On a side note, what's with all this sudden interest in motion comics at Comic-Con? There was Wolfenstein and Spider-Woman, X-Men, Watchmen, Batman, etc. I just don't see the appeal of a comic if it is not bound within pages of script and ink. I hope better sense prevails and this dies down pretty quickly, or else goodbye hardbound graphic novels and collector editions of comicbooks.

21st Century Boys, Vol. 1, by Naoki Urasawa, another great first volume of which looks to be an interesting mystery comic from Japan. Strong overtones of King's "IT" here, with the casual shifting between the adulthood and childhood of the characters and the return of a forgotten thing from childhood plaguing the present. Good stuff so far.

I'll start on Vol. 2 later today.

Definitely agree. I've been disappointed by Gaiman for the past few years (I feel his whimsy level has gotten dangerously high and infected Clive Barker) .

i thought i was the only person who felt this way ..

there are a group of men who seem to be caught up in 'fairy tales'
(gaiman, Barker .. as well as gilliam and del toro on the film side)

the visual style and approach to story telling among these 4 men is becoming too samey for my tastes..and it does feel like they are directly influencing each other

I think the dark fairy tale still has a lot of narrative potential (I'm shopping around a book inspired by Rob Zombie and Russian fairy tales myself right now), but the whimsy hurts it. A dark fairy tale should feel like something your Irish great grandmother told you that keeps you from sleeping for weeks not like a watered down In the Company of Wolves. As much as I dislike saying it, these four are reminding me why Angela Carter was such a great asset.

Hace, You should check out
Irredeemable, invincible, kick-ass, Absolution, Sleeper (all those have superhero stuff, but...not at all like what you'd expect)
Sweet tooth
Criminal
Incognito
The Last Resort
...and of course, the walking dead.

You will need to get back issues or tpbs (trade paperbacks, they're like collections of story arcs or complete series sometimes) to catch up on a few of those, but they're well worth it if you want to stray from the superhero bit. Another thing one could do, if they were so inclined to catch up on back issues or "preview" titles for purchase would be to get an application called DC++, go into some comics hubs, and download them.

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash - The current series is pretty good, the last series was garbage.

Plenty of good stuff doesn't revolve around the supers, I read both, but always like to pick up a good bit of unusual.

Starting Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan, I was told it would be a little more gritty than the other Ellis' works I've read. Spider is def. a little more gruff than, say, Mr. Snow of the Planetary comics, but I'm far from disappointed so far.

Quite. The movie really doesn't do the comic justice. The characterization was amazing. Literally every character had a back story that was just as in depth as the main characters. Eve was a much stronger person than portrayed in the movie as well. All the writing was great but that's to be expected with Alan Moore. Until recently I was an art snob when it came to comics but my introduction to Warren Ellis I have been a lot more focused on the writing aspect. I've got a bunch more of Moore's stuff on the way.

Have you been reading the X force? They intertwine nicely for the Messiah War.

Honestly, I didn't like the on-going Deadpool has that's being written by Daniel Way at first but I've really been loving it recently. Poor Bob lol.

Yeah I remember I read all of that 90's ongoing deadpool, actually have a copy of #1 as part of my collection...started off real good, then like not at the very end but towards the end it REALLY fell down some, almost a chore reading through those parts.

Yep, I read x-force (I download so I pretty much read....everything) and agreed it tied in well with cable. Though out of the two Cable is by far the best series IMO, I just wish they'd get back whoever was doing the art at the beginning...storyline's still cool, but it WAS one of the best looking comics out for a while there too.

The one Marvel thing I avoid is usually all the space stuff, oh and agents of atlas which just looks stupid and I'm sure is just a passing phase...I'm waiting for guardians of the galaxy to move in from the...?war of kings? before I start reading again, I really don't need another crossover.

Brand New Day has allowed for a lot of changes back to a smarter kind of old school Spiderman. Read the recent The Gauntlet issues. It's gone back to Peter having trouble juggling his attempts to build a life and his superheroing. Though a lot of people say "why would Mephisto want Peter and Mary Jane not to be married?" if you think about it, this world is a perfect Hell for Peter. Kraven's family wants revenge, many of his old villains are stronger than ever, J.Jonah Jameson is mayor and he can't find a girl to settle down with. It's a nightmarish throwback to 60s and 70s Spiderman.

Honestly, it's more soap opera-ish than horror-ish... I'm disappointed with the series... But I keep reading it.

The art is great but the writing can be pretty bad.

Everyone else I know who reads it loves it, though, so you might too.

I'll look into it. If I like it that'll be swell and if I don't, I only spent money on the first few issues. :p

Post what you think! I'm always curious about how people feel about that series... Plus, the first few issues are the better ones, so you'll most likely enjoy those.

Reading Skim by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki. Loving it. Will need more graphic novel recommendations. Doc - Anyone?

P.S. Doc: Have you read The Squirrel Machine (http://www.squirrelmachine.org/)? Picked it up for the boyfriend and I think it's something you'll really dig... Haven't read it myself yet, but when I read the positive review in Rue Morgue I thought of you immediately.

So if anyone wants to check out an interesting horror title with REALLY good art, check out FVZA (Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency)...sounds a bit silly I know, but I checked it out and really enjoyed reading it - and the art, as I said...just fucking awesome.

I am officially not interested in super heroes (main stream) outside of Batman, if you count him, at this point thanks to Blackest Night. I lost interest when I quit my job running a comic shop and now it's completely dead to me. I'll stick with my fantastic Dark Horse and Vertigo titles with some Image in there as well.

If you read FC all at once it's much better than reading the individual issues. Out of all the recent events, I think it's the best. Marvel seems to want to alienate me with all this brand x middle of the road Brian Bendis liberalism. Hey, Brian Bendis, I was wondering, is the government always right? Would you write three or four thousand comic pages about the Bush administration so I can find out? Event fatigue is killing me. I think the only good things on the stand are Batman and the current Spiderman run.

In the comic he was like the "older and cooler" kind of guy...and yes, I'd find it hard to believe they won't water it down.
If you've missed it, you should check out "sleeper". Nothing to do with kick-ass, but I reco it to just about everyone.

Just got done with the latest JSA - Since the last issue, they've been doing an "in the future" kind of storyline at the moment where superpowered neo-nazis have taken over the world and de-powered all the "supers", who they have imprisoned and are executing intermittently - an escape plan is being hatched.
I'm really enjoying it.

Read the last "Blackest Night" and here we go again with DC, leading right into another fucking crossover event. Give it a rest.

Nothing really great this week IMO, but I've a few left to go,m including the latest Incorruptible.

Read:

Kick-Ass! by Mark Millar - Fun, quick read with bitching graphics. Really want to see the movie, though am not a huge fan of casting Nick Cage as Big Daddy.
Karney by Bryan Johnson - In this case, K is for Krap. Base. Gross. Unnecessary. Uninspired. Lame.
No Hero by Warren Ellis - Loved it. Great artwork and fantastic story. My only complaint is that I think it could have been twice as long; it would have been stronger with some flashbacks and origin stories. Regardless, great stuff.
Like a Velvel Glove Cast in Iron by Daniel Clowes - At first I was unimpressed by the bizarro absurdity, but taking in context, once considering it was written in 1989, I appreciated the book much, much more. David Boring turned me off Clowes, but I loved Like a Velvet Glove. An absurd journey of Lynch proportions. Weird and fantastic. And great art.
El Borbah by Charles Burns - Lots of fun. Noir homage with a Mexican wrestler as your private dick.
Transmetropolitan vol. 1 by Warren Ellis - Fantastic comic about a dystopic cyber punk future. Plus our hero, Spider Jerusalem, reminds me of our Ferox with his tats.

Currently reading:

Transmetropolitan vol. 2 by Warren Ellis. Good stuff.

Have you read Ex Machina?

Great comic, and if you like it you might like Vaughan's Y the Last Man, about a guy who somehow doesn't catch a virus that kills all the men on earth.

Fables is also very good. I zip through them so fast because they are so well written. This one is about all the characters from fairy tales being forced to live in New York. It's also kinda written for girls I think. A lot of strong female characters who don't always need saving.

Forgot to mention Y the Last Man - I read Vol. 1 and thought it was OK, but wasn't really impressed. I found the characters 1-dimensional and kinda silly. Plus I wasn't a huge fan in terms of how the women were written. The measure of how I felt about that comic: I took a TON of books with me on vacation to Puerto Rico. The books I didn't like, I left there. I left Y the Last Man there. heh.

I saw Fables in Newbury Comics the other day and was tempted to buy it, but wasn't quite sure - I trust your opinion; if I can find it used on Amazon, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the rec.

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL No.44: "Batman Versus The Undead," part one. Batman teams up with a reformed vampire to hunt down a mad scientist hell-bent on using voodoo to reanimate the dead. While not rated for "mature" readers this dark romp through the French Quarter of New Orleans has a couple of truly shocking scenes. Even the cover is unusually gruesome showing you what dreadlocks are really useful for. Written by Kevin Vanhook and drawn by Tom Mandrake who, if I recall correctly, brought us the SUPERMAN AND BATMAN VERSUS VAMPIRES AND WEREWOLVES mini-series from last year. Part two just came out this week. So far it's worth the time and the money.

As it progresses, there gets to be a bit more of an emotional center to the series. I really enjoyed the latest volume. Ennis is a smart guy that sometimes gets bogged down in the business of being offensive and provocative. Preacher for example, makes some played theological arguments as well as presenting some very fresh perspectives on our relationship to the divine.

I just finished up Charles Burns' excellent Black Hole... this guy's art is so damn good its downright intimidating. I know I'll never be half the artist he is, but then again neither will anyone else.

Yeah, the trailer looks pretty solid...very good quality production I'd say.

It's funny, the trailer looks like it covers so much...but it's all from the first few issues.

Charles Burns is sooooooooooooooo fantastic... Have you read his other stuff? His work El Borbah (http://www.thrillingdetective.com/eyes/el_borbah.html) is great noir pulp. I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not, but I loved it. Definitely different than Black Hole, but really enjoyable. Highly recommend it. Plus, if you dig his art, you'll really like it.

I'm actually looking to find a copy of El Borbah, I read it a long time ago and want to read it again. Once I have more disposable income, I plan on buying all Burns' stuff I can find. I do already own Hard Boiled Defective Stories, which stars El Borbah and, like you said, is TOTALLY different from Black Hole. I hear some folks are trying to make a movie out of Black Hole, that could be interesting, though it seems like it would be very difficult to translate it to screen.

I'm really confused about how the printing and re-printing is working with this series...

My library has all of the volumes, except Volume 8, which I just purchased on Amazon so that I wouldn't have to wait for them to get it in. Amazon also has 9, 10, and Tales of Human Waste, if you're interested.

My current goal is to purchase a volume a month to back-fill my collection... I feel so strongly about this series that I'm not even thinking twice about buying them all... Also started buying them for a friend of mine. REALLY good stuff.

Got me into Planetary, too, which is some of the best science fiction that I have ever read... And the boyfriend is going to get the whole Planetary set for his Birthday. :D

Yeah chrono, that's what I was talking about.

So have you all heard about "The walking dead weekly"? It's essentially re-releasing the whole series from issue #1 at a lower price, released weekly...I thought this was a great idea for those who have seen the show and want more, or even those that have never seen/heard of either series to get their heads into it.
Well, there's that or the collections, either's good.

I've just finished reading
*Black Panther - Man without Fear #514
Taking over from the recently possessed daredevil in Hells Kitchen, de-powered and without the technology at his disposal that he's used to relying upon, it's showing a different side of this character I was never all that familiar with. The writing is pretty good on this one and yeah, thought it would be gimmicky but it's quite well done.
The storyline started at issue #513

*Heroes for Hire (current series) #2.
Nothing, at all, to do with any of the older series.
This comic...has a very weird premise...don't want to spoil too much but it's worth picking up #1 and having a look. Some good characters of past titles in there too, and an ongoing mystery that's unfolding.
One of my favourite bit-part sometimes-hero sometimes-villain characters, "Paladin" features pretty heavily in this title, and I like the direction they're taking with him. Pretty decent read.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/bac.jpg

I love this series - I read it every year. It's a great way to sample what's out in comics over the course of the year and become introduced with authors and artists you might otherwise not have heard of. Through the selected excerpts, I was introduced to the below fantastic graphic novels that I just consumed:

Omega: The Unknown (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Jonathan-Lethem/dp/0785130527/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298310178&sr=8-1) (2008)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/omega.jpg

This graphic novel "re-envisions" the original Omega the Unknown (1975) and places the story in a modern New York City. An understated pulp homage, I honestly think that genre fans will absolutely adore this comic and I HIGHLY recommend it (though the ending absolutely and positively sucked).

...

Asterios Polyp (http://www.amazon.com/Asterios-Polyp-David-Mazzucchelli/dp/0307377326/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298310409&sr=1-1) (2009)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/asterios.jpg

An unconventional character-piece, this beautifully illustrated graphic novel tells the tale of Asterios Polyp - His life, how it fell apart, and how he tries to make sense of it all. I really fell in love with the characters, especially his ex-wife Hana. Fantastic read. Highly recommended.

Hey, i'm new.
I just read the second issue of Hellraiser, I've been reading a bunch of non horror comics, and some horror mini comics, like this werewolf anthology series, http://werewolfanthology.wordpress.com/

So I read a lot of comics...though I only actually buy a few, usually after I've "previewed" them.
So I figure as long as I'm doing that I should give props to the best reads I've had that week, and see if I can't get a few people to think about picking them up.
So here's a few:

Action Comics #901
Now this wasn't REALLY among my favourites, but it's pretty action packed and fans of the old "Doomsday/Death and Rebirth of Superman" storyline will probably get a kick out of it, for the first time in quite a while Superman and his "replacements" are together in the one place for an ongoing story arc.
I don't usually follow superman stuff all that much, but this one has me interested to watch for more.

Gotham City Sirens #23
So this series follows Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, living together.
This might turn a lot of people off, and for the better part the series hasn't been that "great"...though the last two issues have really picked up.
If you want to see some good Joker/Black Mask stuff, a prison riot at Arkham, people getting their limbs severed, then have a look at this one.
Though you might want to check out issue #21 as well (skip 22, it's unrelated) to see how the story begins.

Wolverine (current series) #9.
If you haven't read this series from issue #1 the events of the storyline may be a little confusing.
I'm recommending this mainly because there's great fight scenes, and the introduction of something of a super-assassin type character that's pretty cool.
Wolverine, Mistique, and super-assassin guy have a 3-way battle...it was just very cool...

Uncanny X-Men #537
Here's another one that might be a little bit confusing for the first time/long absent reader - Though, there is a nice "recap" at the beginning that pretty much gets you up to speed on what's been happening.
The "known" characters this one focusses around are Colossus and ShadowCat/Kitty Pride.
Like the issue of Wolverine I mentioned above, it's essentially a "fight" comic. Pretty dastardly and resourceful villain too, and one of those "what the fuck?" endings. Best issue of this title I've read in some time.

Captain America - Hail Hydra (All 5 issues)
I don't know if all of the issues are still available, if they are, grab 'em. If not, surely there'll be a collected edition soon enough.
Just a really solid storyline that spans the entire Captain America timeline, and quite cohesively too.
I don't usually get into limited series, but this one hooked me and kept me reading to the end.
I don't want to spoil what's involved, but yeah, seriously a very solid read.

One more I thought I would throw out there to read as a collected edition, is "Irredeemable".
It's a little late coming but I feel like I owe it some credit - Great stuff about a massively powerful superhero who turns on the world, and his team.
It has now run for 24 issues, and has also spawned a "sister title" that has ran alongside it for 18 issues - though impressively, they have yet to bleed into each other.
This comic introduced a reality of it's own so you don't need familiarity with any other comics to pick this one up whatsoever.
It's violent and bloody, but not one of those comics that throws gore all over the place "just because".
Now saying this might cause a touch of a stir, and is probably just a tiny bit of a stretch, but I don't think another comic has come as close to the vibe of "Watchmen" as this one has, in terms of storyline, character histories and overall tone.
It has kept me looking forward to another issue since day #1...and I think that it is one of the best comics available today. This one I've actually purchased. I would purchase as a gift too - even for people not "into" comics.
I cannot endorse it enough.

That's it for me this week.

I've been collecting I, Zombie as well though I have yet to read past the first issue - it's not that I don't like it, far from it, I just think it will be a great story worth reading in a large chunk.
Horror fans would probably really like this one.

Yeah, I'm definetly glad I read it in a trade rather than issue format. The couple individual issues I have read have been pretty stand alone though. There's one issue, it might be the most recent, that's drawn by Gilbert Hernandez and is a characters backstory, that was really good.

Green Lantern #67
Conclusion of the "War of the Green Lanterns".
I'm only mentioning this for one particular epic event I've been hoping would happen for some years, spoiler below
Thaal Sinestro - Welcome back to the GL Corps.
Finally. If Hal Jordan can shrug off becoming a supervillain, this character sure deserves a shot at redemption. I have *always* liked him both on the hero and villain sides, he's one of the more complex characters in the GL universe, and this is just awesome news, it's so good to see him find his way again

For those that don't want spoilers, read the issue, it won't disappoint.
Surprise ending to boot.

Just discovered a bargain bin at one of my favourite comic shops...been picking up a ton of random back issues. Just random Marvel/DC stuff for the most part, nothing too exciting - but I've realty found myself attached to the Legends of the Dark Knight series from the 90's. All self-contained, 2-5 issue Bat stories by different writers/artists...there's some great stuff.

So far I've read Shaman (Dennis O'Neil) and Gothic (Grant Morrison), and I probably have another half-dozen right now that I'm really pumped to get into. Can't believe I didn't know about this series before...

TopCow/Image title "Echoes".
Pretty twisted stuff...really cool story though, perhaps one of the best psychological horror titles I've read in quite some time.
