So I just bought a new computer and of course it comes with Windows new op. system Vista. Well, today I realize that my Sony Handycam (purchased only 10 months ago) is not compatible with Vista.
So who knows what I need to do? Is there a program or a piece of software I can get to make the two compatible? or do I have to get a brand new camera already if I wanna be able to load the video on to my computer?

I could install XP, but that would defeat the purpose of buying a new computer in the first place. Vista is too new and a lot of stuff is not compatible with it yet, but being that the camera is very new too, I can only assume it has the ability to be compatible in the near future. If there aren't any patches that anyone knows of for this yet, I'll just have to wait a while, but it is something that I'd be surprised if Vista isn't equipped to handle. (Backwards compatability.)

i will ask around but em certain that vista is not compatible..
check on the package of ure cam..not with win/op.
ummmm i think there are patches avail but ..in order for them to work you need to upgrade on something else..uncertain at that however.

How do you connect it to your computer (ie what cable/interface)? And what software do you use to transfer your video to your PC?

I'm waiting to get Vista, you'll have to wait for driver updates for hardware and service packs for Vista... bleh.

Contact the company who made your camera and ask them when they are releasing Vista-compatible drivers. This is the exact reason I'm going to wait a couple months before buying a new computer.

I can connect with Firewire or USB, but neither works with Vista yet. In XP, I was using Movie Edit Pro 11, but that also is not compatible with Vista (However, I was aware of that beforehand.) IF my camera had been able to work with Vista, I wasn't gonna really do anything with it until I bought a new editing program anyways, but I may have sent some video to Windows Movie Maker just to test the connection out.

It's a Sony Handycam. If I expected any company to be on top of this, Sony would be one of the ones at the top on my list.

Everyone's gonna need it eventually. Might as well get it early and get more use out of it before it too becomes an obsolete operating system.
We're all sitting around waiting for the same things at this point, but at least I have Vista (and the minute amount of benefits it offers over XP) between now and then. I don't see the point in waiting really...

What model of HandyCam is it?
Did you try installing the drivers that came with it, or did you plug it in and see if Windows had the drivers?
You could try and download the free trial of Adobe Premiere Elements (I think the current version is V3.0) and see if that helps.
I have a panasonic camcorder - windows vista had the drivers to recognise it when I plugged it in via Firewire (should use this over USB for camcorders), but Premiere Elements v2.0 gets an error trying to control the camcorder
If all else fails, you could dual boot XP and Vista on that machine if you have an old XP install disc - use it until there are vista drivers for your camcorder.

It's a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV280. The only software it came with was SOny Picture Package (which is also the installation disc.)
I'll try to figure out if Sony has some sort of patch I can download to make this gel. If I do figure it out, I'll post here since some of you may find it useful info too.

Yahtzee! I figured it out. It was nothing too hard either, I'm just not very savvy when it comes to tech issues. After about an hour of farting around (30 minutes the other day, 30 today) I finally got it installed and working. :)

The website says that your camera is compatible. Did you just plug it in with firewire and vista recognised it/installed it's own drivers? That's the way it worked with my camcorder.

Actually, I haven't had too many compatibility problems with Vista.
My camcorder works (and it is about 2 years old)
I have 3 printers that all work - 2 of them have actual vista drivers written for them, and for the other one, the XP driver works fine.
My scanner has Vista drivers written for it.
NVidia's drivers are a bit immature, but they work.
My Digital TV card has drivers in Vista (didn't need to install anything - just autodetected).
The configuration software for my mouse (Razer Copperhead) didn't work, but within about 1 week there were beta drivers available on the Razer developers website which have worked fine.
The compatibility issues that I have struck so far have been with software - eg Premiere Elements v2.0 doesn't work properly, some games don't install properly, or require some workarounds to get them going. But this happens pretty much whenever a new OS is introduced (eg remember going from Windows 98/ME to XP - lots of games died for me in the transition).
And at least with Vista you don't have to use driver floppies etc to get it to recognise SATA drives on install - and it recognises the whole hard drive (not just 137 gb or whatever it is - my XP disc is pre-service pack).
There are still some bugs in Vista that cause it to operate a bit unexpectedly - but then again there are still bugs in XP :(
Overall, I don't think Vista is so bad, and in many ways it's a real improvement over XP. Personally, I am dual booting both of them at the moment (with each on a 320gig hard drive) so that when I no longer need the XP compatibility (eg upgraded software) then just delete that XP drive and reconfigure the boot loader.
But for those who aren't computer savvy, and don't want to buy a whole new system (incl. peripherals and software) then I can see why staying with XP for a while is not a bad idea. But as you said before, everyone is going to need Vista sooner or later - I mean, Microsoft is not just going to forget about Vista and go back to XP. Developers will follow suit.
