View Full Version : All-around film tournament

seems like I haven't done one of these in a while, this particular one hasn't been done as far as I know since that first one, and I checked 5 pages back and have only found one tournament that isn't done yet, so if there'd be any interest I'd be willing to do up an All-Around Movie Tournament.

Those are a few of my nominations.

The STE

Ok, I realize this exposes a big bias on my part, but fucking Napoleon Dynamite will never be in a Best Movie tournament that I'm in charge of.

Box office records mean shit to me.

The STE
02-17-2007, 10:17 PM
the 64 movies are chosen by me. It'll be a combination of my opinion and general consensus. For example, I did an Asian Movie tournament. Oldboy won. Now, I wouldn't put Oldboy in my top 64 movies list, but it won the Asian movie tournament, so I figure general opinion around here of it must be pretty high, so Oldboy will be in the tournament.

That's not a blanket rule, though. General opinion of The Beyond seems pretty high around here, too, and The Beyond will not be in the tournament.

I figure I'll divide it into 8 genres and pick 8 movies for each genre, so representation will be even.

I loved it, but even out of the few I listed it's not my favorite. I just think it's some amazing storytelling and at least deserves a listing.

while I'm going through movies, I'll post little stats about what I've got so far.

Most represented directors:

Akira Kurosawa: 5

The STE
02-18-2007, 08:32 PM
Ok, the movies have been chosen and randomized within the genres. Here's how the first two rounds will work:
I'm doing two qualifier rounds. In these two rounds, I'll be posting all of the matches of the round at once, and people vote on all of them. The first two rounds will last for 48-ish hours each. After those two rounds, the tournament will be down to 64 titles, 8 per genre, and the tournament will continue like other tournaments have here in the past. First round's matches will be up momentarily.

well I guess the movie selection was good if there's so many tough matches. Either that or all the good ones got paired up and all the filler got paired up.

and in response to one of Austin's comments: Oh, shit, I didn't even notice that Dollars and Yojimbo got paired up. Seriously, I used the exact same randomizing process I use for all my tournaments.

Re Alkey's "Not Romance" comments: A lot of movies span multiple genres. On stuff like the ones you commented on, I decided that if enough reputable places listed them as Romance then I'd put them under Romance. Those three are on AFI's top 100 romantic movies list, and that was the deciding factor

and in response to one of Austin's comments: Oh, shit, I didn't even notice that Dollars and Yojimbo got paired up.

Fair enough, didn;t mean to be an ass, Sam.

You've got a nice tourny going on here, I'm excited. :) Plus I'm drunk.

Agreed, the rest may've been random, but I think that was just a sick joke.

In stuff like this one needs to take general consensus into account. If I just took 256 movies that I thought were the best, I would've plugged my top 100 in and built off of that. Rocky Horror Picture Show is a well-regarded movie 'round these parts, so I included it. If you don't want to vote, then don't vote.

Also, the best documentary ever is in there, I guess you just missed it. And you misspelled "The Five Obstructions"

alkytrio666

I don't know... I can't say that I agree with too many of your choices. Taste in movies is subjective, and I just don't see too many in that list that I really, really like. It's hard for me to participate in any tournament that has "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" as an entry... Maybe I'll get in in the later rounds.

You also missed the greatest documentary of all time: "American Movie". Disappointing...
Then why don't you make your own fucking tournament?

Yeah, don't vote for what you don't want, since other people have been doing that. But, when you guys don't vote for something, that kinda leaves me in an odd position. Should I just ignore the match you don't vote for or should I decide which movie gets the point?

Despare

I'll have to see The Five Obstructions, I hadn't heard anything about it until now and I'm anxious to see it. One of my favorite docs didn't make it either but oh well. Sang des bêtes, Le (or Blood of the Beasts) was quite a watch, powerful stuff.

The films I didn't vote for fall into two catagories. Movies I haven't seen or movies where I didn't care for either option. I think adding your own points would throw it off and personally think just not adding any points is the way to go there.

The STE
02-20-2007, 03:27 PM
that's what I was thinking. At the start when people were omitting movies and some matches had no votes either way was when I was considering attributing points myself.

I like the way this tournament doesn't have a "best foreign movie" section but instead includes them all. Great start STE, can't wait for the finish.

BTW, the "Hamlet" in question is the 1996 Kenneth Brannagh version, in case anybody was wondering

A Face in the Crowd is satirical, and satire generally falls under comedy. I'd say it's about as much of a (dark) comedy as something like Being John Malkovich

I guess I'll have to watch it again.

Fantastic movie, but aside from some of Rhodes' attitude in general I didnt see much humor at all, dark or otherwise...

It's too hard to vote on this many at once.

Go down the list and pick one movie from the two presented. I can't even comprehend how someone can find that hard.

Some people think the Godfather sucks, some people think North is great. No way you're going to agree with everything..did you expect to look at the list and see your top 200 list perfectly in place?

Either vote or don't vote, it's just something to have a little fun with, stop complaining.

The Fly
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0009X768W.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
David Chronenberg's remake of the Vincent Price classic, relies more on the gross-out effects and overall dour tone, but in the process actually makes a more effective picture. No unintentional hilarity ("help me! help me!") to be found here.

VS

Punk: Attitude
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000993W9S.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Very informative, very engrossing documentary on the rise of the punk music scene in New York, LA, and England. Shows interviews from various bandmates (a lot of stuff from Henry Rollins), some obscure clips from concerts, and gives a good history of how the 'punk' scene came about, and the various bands and styles that came after.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002RGNRU.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
From the writer of Being John Malkovich and the director of crazy music videos, one of the best and most original romantic comedies (sorry, guys, that's what it is) ever made, and Jim Carrey's best performance by a mile.

vs

Pulp Fiction
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/1558908242.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Quentin Tarantino's crowning achievment, the comeback for Travolta, arguably the movie that made Sam Jackson a fuckin' star, spawned pretty much its own sub-genre, and about a dozen other accolades one could throw at this movie.

Raging Bull
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00062IVKS.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Martin Scorsese's second best movie, the best sports movie ever, best bio-pic ever, and one of De Niro's best performances. At one time this was real close to making my top 5 of all time.

VS

Sin City
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00005JNTX.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Not since the 9 hour cut of Greed has there been a more faithful adaptation of a written medium. I'd go so far as to say that this isn't an adaptation, it's a straight translation of the comic books to film. And besides AKIRA, it's the best comic book movie ever, and remains one of the best uses of black and white after colour came around (yeah, even better than you, Wizard of Oz!)

Memento
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00003CXZ4.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Sure, it's not the first movie to tell events out of chronological order (Betrayal came way before this), but it's the best, and the chronological reversal acts as plot enhancement rather than an emotional manipulator. Fantastic performance by Pearce, Joey Pants is wonderfully ambiguous, and Nolan gives it a fantastic neo-noir feel.

vs

Star Wars
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000FQJAIW.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Plot-wise, acting-wise, for the most part not so great, though charming in its simplicity. The story here is the insanely innovative special effects. And Darth Vader.

If my last post came off as me not liking Jedi, then that's not true at all, I've enjoyed all of 'em, even the last 3 that weren't all that great. Out of the first three I just think Empire is the superior followed by 'Hope' and then not to far behind 'Jedi'.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00005O3VC.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
For my money, the funniest movie ever made. And one of the most quotable. "It's just a flesh wound!" "What's the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?" "Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of ELDERBERRIES!" There's comedies, then there's this.

VS

American Psycho
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0009A40ES.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Yeah, it's witty, well directed, has a unique sort of atmosphere, but the real story here is the star making performance by pre-Batman, pre-Equilibrium Christian Bale. He completely dissappears into the role like few actors of the modern era can do. Very good movie punctuated by a great performance.

Miyazaki's take on Alice in Wonderland. Not his best film, but the best of his more family friendly films (Princess Mononoke wasn't family friendly). Rich, detailed animation, and Mr. No-Face

VS

Toy Story
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000059XUT.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Matrix

For better or worse, the shape of both sci-fi and action films today owe a lot of their style to The Matrix. Perhaps not the best action movie, but arguably as infulential on modern action as Die Hard was to the "classic" action movies.

VS

Office Space
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000AP04L0.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
In my opinion, the best office comedy (including TV shows) ever. A star-making performance by Ron Livingston, at least one memorable quote per scene, and the genius idea of that rap soundtrack all make this movie the sleeper little gem it is.
