The Thing
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002CHK1S.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
John Carpenter's remake of the Howard Hawks classic, though mostly just a separate adaptation of "Who Goes There?". Good perfrmances by Kurt Russel and Keith David, good special effects, heavy atmosphere and nicely ambiguous ending. And for the most part, the characters weren't stupid, so there's always that.
VS
Clerks
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00000IQC8.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
While it may not have been the first movie of its kind, most workplace comedies that take place in a non-office setting are compared to Clerks, mostly in a "pff, that's not nearly as good as Clerks" way. And with good reason. Look past the gruddy look and the rampant swearing, and you'll see some smart dialogue with almost a cinéma vérité look to it.

2001: A Space Odyssey
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00005ASUM.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Long stretches of silence, very little in the way of coherent plot, ambiguous beginning, ambiguous ending, pretty antiquated in its views of what 6 years ago would be like, and one of the best movies ever made, probably THE best science fiction movie ever made. One of the few films I'd call "art."
VS
Evil Dead 2
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/6305095442.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Not art. But a hell of a fun movie, and probably more influential than it gets credit for. A lot of fun, gorey, horror/comedies have tried to be Evil Dead 2, some have been better movies, but still, none of them are Evil Dead 2.

Halloween
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/6305546789.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Black Friday may have done it first, but Halloween did it better than anybody before or since. It had an almost Hitchcockian style in how it built suspense, not resorting to mindless "scares" where someone just jumped out of the side of the frame, a style that is apparently nigh impossible to duplicate. Decent to solid performances all around, especially an unnecessarily good performance by Nick Castle.
VS
March of the Penguins
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000BI5KV0.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
There aren't a lot of blockbuster documentaries, but here's one of them. It's not an indictment of the president or an exposé on wrongly accused teens or an artistic filmmaking challenge, it's just penguins looking cute while Morgan Freeman narrates. The simplicity and how it works out is actually kindof admirable.
Although, I'm figuring on a lot of dead penguins in this one

Real life pair Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star in one of the most well-received romance movies in a long time. I actually haven't seen it yet, but I'm a big fan of both actors, especially Gosling.
VS
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0001GF2DS.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
One of the three great westerns (along with Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch). Maybe not ALL westerns try to be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but most do, and the rest should.

VS

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00068ULLY.01-A2LWKZGGMBGN21._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
The exact opposite of all these infulential movies in the tournament. Samurai movies, kung fu movies, spaghetti westerns, and exploitation movies all rolled up into one giant bloody violent epic. Some call it the greatest mob movie ever. While I think Godfather is better, it's damn close between the two. Even then, it's still one of the greatest movies of all time, and one of Scorsese's best.
VS
Schindler's List
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00012QM9K.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
The best holocaust movie, Steven Spielberg's best movie, formerly on my top 10 list. This is one of the most emotionally affecting movies I've ever seen. I'd put it up there with the likes of Requiem for a Dream (though not quite as high as that), with a nice grey-area protagonist and an evil 'villain,' and Ben Kingsly giving a hell of a performance as the only really good one out of the main characters. Excellent movie.

This one actually makes me kinda sad. McDowell could've had a great career. If...., A Clockwork Orange, but then he was in Caligula. Anyways, Kubrick gives this a weird and unique feel, making it one of those movies that's tough to fit in a particular genre, not unlike Pulp Fiction. Good supporting cast, but the thing that makes the movie is McDowell's scary performance as Alex.

Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000CZ0PT4.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Awww. How could you not like Wallace and Gromit? Despite anime and CGI animation dominating the animated movie field these days, it's nice to see a good stop-motion feature film. Even when the weird innuendo comes in out of left field, there's not a frame in the movie that isn't at least a little charming.
VS
Perfect Blue
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00004TIT3.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
One of the better movies of this sort, live action or animated, if only for the fact that most movies like this are filled with dozens of clichés that this one manages to avoid, especially concerning the ending. And the art in terms of framing and all that rivals most of the stuff Miyazaki's done, surpassing at least a couple of his movies. Aronofsky got a lot of the look of Requiem for a Dream from this movie.

M
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00065GX64.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
The serial killer movie that started it all. And it allowed the long stretches of silence even when Sound pictures, or "talkies" as we insiders call them, were still relatively new and people jammed sound in everywhere. It didn't just have sound in the movie. It used sound. The whistling, the girls name being called out over and over again. And who could forget the imagery implying that first death in the movie? The empty place at the table, that balloon hitting the power lines. And there's Peter Lorre owning every scene he's in.
VS

One of the iconic anime horror movies (of which there are oddly few). It was a toss-up which I was going to put in between this and VHD: Bloodlust, but this one barely made it over the other. Great animation, and a weird face on D's hand.

While a lot of the fanbase of this movie annoys me (which you could easily say about Scarface, too, anyways), the movie its self is practically a classic already. The character designs are unique, the writing is solid, and the musical numbers are not irksome, which is more than one can say for 90% of the rest of the musicals made.

Remember when Tom Cruise wasn't blatantly crazy, and made movies that were actually good? I miss those days. Those were good days. This was also during Spielbergs weird sci-fi movie period, which turned out the dreadful AI, but I think this one definately makes up for it. Good effects, good action scenes, and a good supporting performance by pre-Alexander Colin Farrel.

It's all about the best cinematography in movies, so if nothing else, it looks a hell of a lot better than your average flick. Might not be the most interesting thing to watch for the average movie-goer, but if you're big into movies and moviemaking, this is definately one to check out.

I could just leave it at the title and cover- hell, I could leave it at the title, and I wouldn't have to say another word. For my money, this is the best movie currently in the tournament, since Taxi Driver got eliminated in the qualifying rounds. Bogart, Bergman, Claude Reins, As Time Goes By, that dialogue, everything about this movie, really. It's Casablanca.

I know I was just joking, I just think Taxi Driver is so deserving of a spot. Not enough people voted in the prelims I think just because of the size of the list. I say take Taxi Driver and another deserving movie that got some votes in the prelim and toss them in just so... so there's a correct number of matches. Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket.

Psycho
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/42/1c/166ab220dca0813f97e17010.L.jpg
Possibly the most iconic horror movie of all time, up there with Jaws or Night of the Living Dead. The music was tone-perfect, the mid-film twist was well done, and Anthony Perkins is top-notch, creating a twitchy, nervous little man that he would later perfect in Orson Welle's The Trial. Not the best horror movie ever, but very few are better.

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00005LOKQ.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
This one must've been a bitch to market. Part romance, part fantasy, part action, part comedy, et cetera. And it works on all of those levels. A lot of great performances, particularly by the late Andre the Giant, but the REAL star of the movie is Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, who I am still baffled didn't get any awards for the role. Also features the best sword fight scene I've ever seen.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

The one that started it all. The semenal horror film AND German expressionist film. The plot and acting, while both were good, are not nearly the point of the movie. The point is the look, the horrifically angled houses, the tall chairs, the jumbled mess that is the town, the nightmarish look that infects everything in the movie. There's no way the look of this movie could ever be replicated.

I would almost go so far as to say this should be required viewing for anybody interested in the filmmaking process. The whole thing really sheds some light on the ratings system and how flawed it really is. Explains the rules for appealing a film rating, shows that a lot of the reasons films get rated NC-17 are vague and can change from movie to movie, and that the MPAA is much more inclined to help out a studio film than an indy movie. See this movie.

Japanese high school students killing each other in various violent ways, "Beat" Takeshi as the stone-faced teacher who kills a couple students himself, and Verdi's Requiem Mass. Twelve of the greatest actors of their day, a couple of them some of greatest actors of all time, sitting in a room deciding the fate of a young-ish man accused of murder. No need for a fancy plot or any action in this one. The direction could have been functional and just relied on the weight of the actors, but Lumet directs it in a subtle but very powerful way that accentuates the acting. One of the movies generally regarded as the best of all time (along with Casablanca and Citizen Kane), and with good reason. The movie is absolutely great on every conceivable level.
