Tobe Hooper direted TCM which is arguably the best horror movie ever made. I'd say that, even though the rest of his body of work wasn't that great, he's still earned the honor just for Texas in my mind.

Browning directed the greatest horror film ever made, but Raimi 2 films that made the list, as well as some of my favourite action movies.

Sam Raimi

I have more fun with his stuff and am able to spend more time with it; both horror and non. He's a director who makes both films for fans as well as the masses and also combines the two on occasion. Tod Browning was a pioneer no doubt, but I give Sam the nod.

Which Argento film are you refering to?

Because I'd give the honor to Bob Clark for Black Christmas over JC for Halloween. (Black Christmas came out a full 4 years ahead of Halloween but incorporated much of the same camera techniques that Halloween gets credit for. It is also, as far as I've seen, the first slasher film that was done in manner that resembles what we still see today.) Although, LHotL was a few years ahead of it, I wouldnt exactly think of that as a slasher film. (I certainly do credit Craven for having some balls back then though.)

Sorry, I meant Bob Clark and JC for Black Christmas and Halloween. I definately give Craven credit for having the guts to make a film like that at the time but he gets none for creating the slasher genre. Like I said that goes to Clark and Carpenter, at least imo.

p.s.
I often get Black Christmas and Sunday mixed up which is why I said Bava rather than Clark.

Slashers (http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22240&perpage=15&pagenumber=1)

the first one (if we have to take all murder mysteries into the slasher genre) was in the 40s...Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None"...

The first independent one was "Peeping Tom"(1960)...the year in which "Psycho" released too...then there was Herschel Gordon Lewis' "Blood Feast(1963)...

Bava's "Blood and Black Lace" came in 1964...and "Bay of Blood" in 1971...

although its claimed that "Black Christmas" was the first horror film to use the "the calls are coming from inside the house" plotline...

Quarterfinals - Match 3

Our next quarterfinalist earned his spot by first trouncing Takashi Shimizu 9-1 followed by a an absolute thumping of James Whale for a 7-0 shutout. Can he continue his path of destruction through the competitors?

John Carpenter - Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Christine, Prince of Darkness, They Live!, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned (remake), Vampires, Ghosts of Mars.

And his opponent, making his way to the Elite 8 via a 7-0 shutout of Eli Roth and a very dominant and convincing 12-3 win over Lucio Fulci...

David Cronenberg - Shivers, Rabid (aka Rage), The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers

Quarterfinals - Match 4

Our next quarterfinalist made his way to this point by first winning a hard fought 8-6 battle with Don Coscarelli before laying the smack down on Rob Zombie 8-1....

Stuart Gordon - Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls, The Pit & The Pendulum (1990), Castle Freak, Dagon, King of the Ants

And our final quarterfinalist earned his spot with not one, but two extremely dominant and convincing wins. The first was an 11-0 shutout over William Castle while the second was 13-1 pummeling of Mario Bava. Will Stuart Gordon be able to fair any better?

George Romero - Night of the Living Dead (original), Season of the Witch (aka Hungry Wives), The Crazies, Martin, Dawn of the Dead (original), Creepshow, Day of the Dead, Monkey Shines, Two Evil Eyes, The Dark Half, Bruiser, Land of the Dead

(Before we get started with the Final 4, I just want to comment that I think the 4 we ended up with are all true horror juggernauts when it comes to directing so you guys give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.)

To ensure that the rightful director wins from here on out, the matches are to 10 votes instead of 7. Furthermore, there will be no more 1 point victories. In order to claim a win, the director must be leading by 2 votes or more and have more than 10 total votes.

SemiFinal - Match 1

Our first semifinalist has made his way through the tournament with a combined record of 27-10, taking out such great directors as Clive Barker, Alexandre Aja, and the early favorite to win this tournament, Alfred Hitchcock...

Dario Argento - The Bird with Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebre, Inferno, Opera, The Card Player

Standing in his way is our second semifinalist, making his way through the tournament with a combined record of 27-7 with two of wins coming by way of shutout... He's knocked out Christophe Gans, Takashi Miike and Tod Browning along the way...

Wes Craven - Last House on the Left, the Hills Have Eyes, Swamp Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, Chiller, The Hills Have Eyes 2, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Shocker, The People Under the Stairs, New Nightmare, Vampire in Brooklyn, Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3, Cursed, Red Eye

Blast! This is another hard choice.

Ive only seen one of Argento's films, Suspiria, and it blew me away. One of the greatest horror films Ive ever seen, and it spent quite a bit of time on the Honorable Mentions section of my signature.

On the other hand, Ive seen plenty of Craven's films and they are very hit and miss. Hills Have Eyes and Nightmare on Elm Street were incredible, but Chiller is one of the worst movie's Ive ever seen. Swamp Thing wasnt great either, Cursed was pretty dumb, but I did really like Scream. For the most part though, he's a hack.

I think just for the sheer masterprice of Suspiria I have to go with Argento. Craven made a couple of great movies, but none can live up to Suspiria.
