Hmm - I do tend to love Most horror - even if a film is shite in the genre I love, I try to look for the good in it lol. As for a top ten - this is so hard and will forever change depending on my mood - but for today:
1. The Exorcist
2. TCM (1974)
3. Friday 13th
4. Halloween
5. Cannibal Holocaust/Ferox...can't decide which one.
6. the Eye
7. the Ring
8. Amityville (Original)
9. N.O.E.S.
10. frailty or The lost Boys
Hmm I really wanted to include I spit on your Grave, Scream, Suspiria, Terror At the opera, The Burning, Henry, New York Ripper, D.O.D, The Entity, Battle Royale and about 200 hundred more but I guess I'll stick with them for now lol.

That was aimed at me. I was still thinking about my list and typed The Grudge rather than Ringu. :p (Now that I think of it, Ringu definitely belongs on that list!)
I liked the American version of The Grudge better than Ju-On *ducking anything being thrown at her* But when it comes to Ringu, the original wins hands down. Sadako's constantly-obscured face, the creepy way she moves, the whole atmosphere of that flick kicks ass.
Samara was creepy, but I think they showed a bit too much of her.
Apparently we Ringu fans are going to have to watch each other's backs. Haters are everywhere.

Hey all, I'm new here and hope to be around for a while. Big fan of horror movies, only a recent interest (few years) so I am so not as expertistic (a word? XD) as most of you. I do think I have a decent sense of what is good and bad though, but sometimes I can be a little off. Anyways, here goes:
1. Dead Alive / Braindead
2. Evil Dead 2
3. High Tension
4. Dead and Breakfast
5. The Skeleton Key
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street
7. SAW / SAW 2
8. Cabin Fever
9. Night of the Living Dead
10. The Amityville Horror
Damn, had a hard time filling that up.
Haha, my tastes have changed a little.
I'm pretty sure this is my second or third time posting a top 10 list, ever. It's just too difficult. But here goes;
Can't really call that "in order"
The Hills Have Eyes '06
The Devil's Rejects
The Blair Witch Project
Ginger Snaps
Fragile
The Descent
Scream (trilogy)
Evil Dead 2
House of 1000 Corpses
Haute Tension
And now the all-times;
Running Scared
Lucky Number Slevin
Crash
The Hills Have Eyes
The Devil's Rejects
Minority Report
Artificial Intelligence

No, I was listing my favourite movies outside of any genre limits. Though again, that list doesn't reflect much. I didn''t even list Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, or Oldboy which all belong on there.

Here's a fixed list.
These are the films I've decided on, as you can see - my horror list is pretty short. Only 3, really... not 10. I could list more, but I can't be sure if they are "favourites" or ones I just enjoyed. I guess both are really the same... the other change too frequently, so I won't post the others.
+ Top Ten Inside of Horror Limits (no order)
The Devil's Rejects
The Hills Have Eyes
The Blair Witch Project
+ Top 10 Outside of Genre Limits (no order)
Crash
Oldboy
Minority Report
Running Scared
The Devil's Rejects
The Hills Have Eyes
Lucky Number Slevin
A. I. Artificial Intelligence

PS; Sleepaway Camp = the ass. In a good kick kind of way.

what is that one about.
It was remade in the US as "The Vasnishing" - but skip the American version. The original is a brilliantly haunting meditation on loss, obsession and death. Just thinking about the ending makes me squirm in my seat.

based on the novel (more like a novella) by Tim Krabbe ... brother to actor Jeroen Krabbé.

well- i still go with the list of most influential horror films in a book called Projected Fears:
Dracula (1931), The Thing (1951), Psycho (1960), Night of the Living Dead (1968), The Exorcist (1973), Texas Chainsaw (1974), Halloween (1978), Silence of the Lambs (1991), Scream (1996), and The Sixth Sense (1999).
I stand by these as the films that most dramatically changed the nature of horror films!

A top ten is far too difficult a list to compile (for me), whether it is simply favourites or ground breaking moments in horror cinema. I offer you ten films that scared the living shit out of me the time I first saw them...leaving an impressionable mind scarred for life.
1. Psycho
2. Night of the Living Dead
3. Jaws
4. The Changeling
5. The Exorcist
6. The Omen
7. Alien
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
9. Halloween
10. The Evil Dead
I want it understood that I am speaking of the original films and not any sequels or remakes. By the way, being recently subjected to The Notebook by my wife almost rivals these childhood frights.

I did not join this forum to argue the merits of 'The Notebook', nor did I join to have the security in my manhood questioned by a complete stranger. It was a joke...a little levity and was not meant to be taken so seriously. Truth is, as tear jerkers go...I'm more of a 'Terms of Endearment' fan.

Freddy Vs. Jason was a really fun movie. They did a good job of mixing the culture of the Friday the 13th movies with that of the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks, and the result was a really enjoyable horror movie. No more, no less.
And we haven't (with the exception of The Descent) been given those very much as of late.

Wha?! I hated 7! And loved 6!
#6 tried too hard to be different, and fell flat IMO. The comedy angle seemed really forced to me...they really should have let the series die with #5. #7 was barely better than #6 (Concept was dumb, but it had some really cool moments)...#8 was pretty good, but nothing that we couldnt have done without. Ive yet to see the last 2, but Im sure they're no great shakes either.

I liked how #5 tried to take it back to the mystery style of the first two. Wasnt quite on par with them, but definatly better than #4 or any of the next three that came after.
#8 was just mindless fun. It wasnt great really, but I enjoyed it alot more than #6 or #7.
Looking forward to Jason Goes to Hell, bought it off Ebay, along with Jason X. Should be here soon...

It amazes me how you guys manage to put up a top 10 list. There are too many films I love, and for too many different reasons. I can say that for typical slashers, I highly enjoy the Sleepaway Camp trilogy. For modern films, The Descent, High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, House of 1000 Corpses, and The Devil's Rejects are ones I adore. For horror-comedies, Evil Dead I & II, and for horror anthologies, the Creepshow trio. I highly respect the original Night of the Living Dead for what it entailed message-wise (I watched a doc. commenting on all of this, and how the events in the film pertained to the time period). For foreign horror, The Sympathy Trilogy from Park-Chan is among my favorite, and much from Takashi Miike. For real-scares, The Blair Witch Project. I could go on and on, there's no way someone as indecisive as myself could make a definitive top 10 list.

A nightmare on Elm street, Halloween, The Shining, Friday the 13th, Psycho, Bride of Frankenstein, Jaws, Evil Dead, The Howling, IT.
EDIT: I'm sure the first four will always stick. They have since I was a kid. :)

After thinking about it for a few days, I think my top ten has changed three or four times. I didn't include The Thing or Event Horizon or a bunch of others that are only now not at the top of my head. And I thought a top ten would be easy.

I can't be fucked looking thru the thread to see if I made a list or not. I'd say most of its still the same... it takes awhile for the newer stuff I've seen to make a top 10 list for me.

Ditto. The scene in the town square where people have gone delerious from plague is such a beautifully eerie scene.
Not to mention that although Max Schreck is still sinister as hell in the original Nosferatu, Klaus Kinski gives him a real soul and you end up sympathising him. Not to mention the scene where he sees a little cross as he's piling the withcoffins into the church (his reaction always makes me chuckle) and a brilliant twist ending that left me floored when I first saw it.

Nice to see The Sentinel on your list. It's way more obscure than it deserves, with its stellar cast and direction (by Michael Winner of all people). Scared the hell out of me as a kid.

I think it's a great film but I think its so underrated because of Michael Winner's involvment-he is absolutely despised in the UK.
