Does anyone here have any experience with getting proper legal permission to use copywrited songs? I've always used all original music, but this time through there are some songs that I would like to use. So I'm trying to figure out the proper channels to do so, so everything thing is 100% legit.

Depends who or where you're trying to get it from. If it's some unsigned band you heard on mp3.com or such, you can likely get it for nothing more than a screen credit and a copy of the finished film since any publicity for them is good as well (that's how I got into the indie horror films myself).
If you're trying to get 'Let It Be' from The Beatles or such, I wish you a lot of luck and a lot of money. Licensing works is very expensive.

Yeah that much I actually already did, with smaller bands and such. but I'm curious about some shit on major lables. Even if I don't use them I'm curious of the process of doing so.

I know I once referred to a 'Dummy's Guide To Music Business' or such at the library a few months ago on a similar topic. You can check HERE (http://www.filmmusicmag.com/faq/) to answer your question a little more in depth of the whole process. Again, it will cost you a bundle so good luck.
