Hello all, I am just new to this site!
I need your help!!
Im trying to do my dissertation at the mo, on The female Identity in past and present horror/ slasher films, and i need ur views on the subject. As much feedback as possible would be much appreciated!!
Do any of you have any views on the subject ie, the female as the victim, the man as the monster, the final girl, the different characters or just an opinion on the genre as a whole???
ya know how, ts always the girls having sex with their boyfriends that are quickly killed off, while the virgin (or final girl as you put it) is the one who overpowers the bad and defeats him.
Does anyone agree/ diagree with: the victim-heroine is female who "acquits herself 'like a man'," therefore by the end of the slasher horror film, the typical "feminine" characteristics become "masculinized" through the action of the film.
I need to build up info, possible interviews and others opinions
Please help would be so so appreciated!! :) I need your help!!

Yeah, especially in "Sleepaway Camp".

i dont know about masculinized ...
I think she just hits the 'i'm not going to take it anymore' point ..
Its more akin to the phenomenon of the mother that lifts the car to get it off of her child ...
Anger, strength and fighting back isnt for men only ...
It is funny how the bad girls get killed off and the virgin (usually) survives ..
Was it like that in the beginning ... as a justification for killing them off - or was it to make a greater more interesting contrast when the mousy (read : J.L Curtis) girl becomes a pillar of strength ? (and since then the pattern/rules were established and other filmmkers followed suit ?)
When i think of horror movies - esp the slasher films .. the good girl is also the last one the killer comes for so she's a bit more prepared. The bad girls are always being caught unawares .. during or just after the act.
I personally think thats just a very concious effort to link sex and violence .. i dont think the filmmaker is trying to give us a moral lesson.
Quite often too the heroine is aided by luck ... and help ... and othe plot devices made solely to build tension.
Other than that .. she usually has a few more minutes to try to defend herself because unlike the other girls, she knew what was coming.
any of that make any sense ?
very interesting topic.
seems like ur focusing on female victims, how about female agressors?
i know theres not too many, i guess the chick in species would kinda count, Misery too.
the thing i noticed in species (i think, II) was that in the end, where she finally hooked up with the male alien, she kills him ya know? i dont recall why but i remembering thinking 'thats cuz us bitches got to stick together'
as for misery, she was just fucked in the head. but i think thats more along the lines of shes just a psychological bitch, and could really go either way male or female.
how abou carrie? starts off as a nice girl, doesnt fit in, crazy mother and ends up goin ballistic... kinda like Columbine type stuff hm?
also the girl in exorcist.. samara..

WOW! An interesting topic! Good job noob!
Ummmm, too bad I don't have anything interesting to say in response (that hasn't been said already).
However, I will say that it does seem to me that in horror movies the "bad" chicks certainly seem to almost never last, and it's as if the film tries to make up for that by making the main woman character the survivor/hero. Which would offset any previous weaknesses shown by a woman character.
Now, a whole other argument would be, why MEN are never (or hardly ever the survivor) and particularly black men/women.

urge, do you know if there is a scientific term for these types of feats?
Also -- I'm sorry -- did you say "heroine" in there somewhere? :D

Now. back on topic.
Im amazed that noone has mentioned Pamela Voorheses! She was one baaad mother
Women can also be heroic without being masculine. Silence of the Lambs, Resident Evil make good examples. Clarice in Silence, Alice in RE. Also in RE, Rai is a good example of your masculine point...

Watch the extras on I believe Jason X about the histopry of the F13 franchise. They call it a morality tale. You sin you die. Thats a reason for the "good" girl surviving. Even christians called JGtH a return to morality after the girl tosses the condom.
Also as to women being masulinized (sp) they do that to the Barbera character in NotLD 90. She starts as this prim and proper girl as was barbera in the original, but then switched to sigouyrney weaver mode. I think it has to do with the "getting your hands dirty to survive" type of thing. she has to be stronger to live through this kind of horror, and cant be the screaming and fainting character from the 50's. it reflects todays societal ideas towards women

slasher movies always stereotype the characters. even if you don't remember their names, you remember their role. the slutty chick always goes early as does the smartass, the mean one, and the nerdy one. the nice guy usually dies trying to protect the virgin.

There's also May...
and if any of you like female killers, you'll love my movie(hopefully). :p If I ever get it made. She will be similar to May & Carrie, in a way...but different. I want my character to be alot creepier than Carrie and May...I want my movie to be more "exciting", and I want her to torture her victims more. :D

I'm writing it and I'm going to have it filmed myself. :p I have a couple of friends who make their own movies and they're supposed to help me out some.
And yes, I'm gonna play the part of the psycho! :D Everybody thinks I'd make a good horror movie girl and I want to act more than anything so...I've given up on anyone else helping me. I'm just going to make the movie myself soon, before I get too old to play the part, cause to me, there's no point in making the movie if I can't play the main character. :p

Well in the past era's , such as Hammer Films glory days, the female was not always the victim. Ingrid Pitt, one of the Hammer Glamour girls, was the queen of horror in the early 70's. She played a sexy vamp in "The Vampire Lovers" and "The House That Dripped Blood" and could kill you just as dead as a Chris Lee. She also played a social path serial killer in "Countess Dracula" So the female was not always just a victim. In my opinion Ingrid Pitt and the gals in her era can't be touched by todays female horror stars. Of course this is just the opinion of a 46 year old guy who grew up watching horror films with a major crush on Ingrid Pitt!!!!!!! ;) :D She could bite me anytime!!!!!!!!:p :D Ahhhh the good old days of horror.......
