Len Wiseman's "Underworld" dominated movie screens this weekend, pulling in an estimated $22 million. With a bigger debut than the studio expected, the vampires versus werewolves love story/horror/action film surpassed "Resident Evil" 's March opening of $17.8 million.
In "Underworld", the warrior vampiress Selene (Kate Beckinsale) falls in love with werewolf Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) amidst a war between their races. Initially, the film was pitched as a Romeo & Juliet for vampires & werewolves - a summary which neglects the gore, violence, and action in "Underworld".
Disney's suspense thriller "Cold Creek Manor", starring Dennis Quaid & Sharon Stone, debuted at number 5 with a tepid $8.3 million. Lions Gate's "Cabin Fever" feel from number 3 to the number 5, taking in $3.9 million over the weekend.
