Vampire Party DVD Review
This party doesn't suck.

Also known as Les dents de la nuit in its native France, this fang-filled farce is unfettered fun. Fortunately. Because when I looked at the DVD cover, my first thought was: "Oh, no… I've just recovered from Stan Helsing!"

But Vampire Party is not that bad. It's not great, mind you, but it's more along the lines of a comingling of Killer Pad, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Scary Movie. The wit seems a bit classier en français, and the jokes translate well. The setup is nothing special, but here's the obligatory plot rundown just in case the title didn't tip you off: Diehard party-pals Sam (Patrick Mille), Alice (Frédérique Bel) and Prune (Julie Fournier) have scored engraved invites to Medici Night, an elite bash held annually on the grounds of a remote estate boasting its own medieval keep complete with a dance floor and open bar. Soon enough Sam, Alice and Prune discover that they're on the drink menu for a coven of VIP vampires who'd give any gourmet mixologist a run for their money — but not a running start.

Captives in the castle, our threesome tries to keep their own precious bodily fluids in their skins while slaying as many bloodsucking boogiemen as humanly possible. In between the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll (soundtrack scores Eagles Of Death Metal, Goldfrapp, The Magic Numbers, Benjamin Diamond, Scratch Massive, and Ghostcat to name a few) the terrified trio manage to choke out a few jokes — and they're actually funny. There's also some 4th wall breakage, and a werewolf seduction scene.

I'm not saying Vampire Party is the second coming of Love At First Bite or anything, but it's a solid and entertaining vampire comedy. It does start to get a little long in the tooth towards the end, but the snazzy visuals and amped up tunes should keep you amused till the closing credits (and I almost forgot to mention: there's a super-cool animated opening titles sequence!).
