HDC Movie of the Week #1 - Troll Hunter aka Trolljegeren (2010)

Full credit goes to Anthropophagus for this wonderful suggestion.

Every week (on a Monday), I will post a chosen contemporary horror film. You are required to post your thoughts, views, likes and dislikes of that film and if you would like to recommend it to your fellow HDC members (and visitors) or not.

For this inaugural week, I have chosen the wonderfully crafted Norwegian tale called Trollhunter (2010).

The film was a novel take on the "found-footage" sub-genre which had boomed from the time the first Paranormal Activity film hit the screens in 2007.

Why novel?

Because where most of such films centered on ghosts and paranormal phenomena, this film deviated from that particular mould and followed in the steps of Cloverfield (2008).

It was a fresh, smart and interesting film, complete with some awesome jaw-dropping CGI effects and very believable "folklore" tales from that northern European country. By the end of the film, most unsuspecting viewers will end up concluding that trolls really do exist in Norway - such is the impact of this "documented" found footage.

I absolutely love this film! And it's all thanks to the members of HDC for me seeing it. Others here had seen it before me and raved about it. I would definitely recommend to people.

While I was growing weary of "found footage" films this one came along and redeemed the genre. Well done and very enjoyable. Eagerly awaiting a sequel.

I concur - a great film; & that ending with the footage of the Prime Minister was awesome.

I love this movie. One of the best uses of found footage I've ever seen and I love that they went with Trolls as that's something that hasn't been done much.

The story was really well done, the characters were likable and interesting and the Trolls were amazing. One of my favorite new films and an excellent addition to the giant monster and found footage genres.

Villain has pretty much said it all for me.

A true gem of a movie, superb acting and storyline.yes it is far fetched but isn't most horror.A lot of the camera work is so good that you forget it is a found footage movie at all.

I guess I'll be the first to have a little different take.

I thought it was good, not great. It was a neat idea and it gets several points from me for originality, but it just felt flawed. There were just too many lulls where I seemed to wait for something and receive nothing for my patience. Some of the comedic elements that were supposed to be funny, really weren't to me. It really just needed more of "something" to really make it work.

I'll give it a Thumbs Up because I do think it's worth watching, and if I were to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 6/6.5 for better than average, but it just doesn't have much rewatchability for myself.

I'm going to have to jump on the "Troll" train with everybody else. Along with all the other great things said, I found this little gem also gave some fairly plausible explanations for all things Troll.
