I really liked this movie. The style, color, and music is among the best I have ever seen and heard. The massive build up of the movie really payed off in the last 15 minutes, when the supernatural factor began to surface. The acting and story were both wonderful, and the Anchor Bay DVD release was top notch as usual. I would recomend this movie to any horror fan.

Suspiria is one of my favorites.
The colors are rich and weird - partially from the film stock - but also careful lighting, in the style of Mario Bava (who Argento worked with on Inferno). Typical horror uses cobwebs and spooky castles... Argento defied that idea by using beautiful art deco architecture. Reminds me of the Karloff/Lugosi Black Cat, same idea - ultramodern, stylish and creepy. The acting is spotty, but I find that to be a problem with a lot of genre Italian films. I read that Jessica Harper did her lines in English and the rest of the cast did them in Italian - since no one in Italy records dialogue on the set anyway - I can imagine that interfering with the acting. Suspiria and Inferno were the first two in a trilogy that was never finished; Argento's finally working on #3. Details at the bottom of this: http://www.darkdreams.org/trieste_report.html. I heard that there will be a Hollywood remake of Suspiria. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, no doubt. Leslie, what's your opinion? |

I enjoyed Suspiria a lot! For the same reasons everyone here listed: great visuals and music. I also like Jessica Harper. I am still looking for Inferno and Deep Red can't find 'em at my video stores so far...

Not a fan of Argento's. It's blasphemy, I know. Didn't enjoy Suspiria, but HATED Deep Red on a level I never thought possible.

there certainly is a build up and the end is almost surprising. there were parts that i was scared but it was the parts that nothing happened when you thought something would..made me kind of uneasy...and it freaked me out that they were being drugged while evil was going on....EEEEK! it was good but i'm almost fearful of owning it..go figure..LOL!

Yeah "Deep Red" just didn't seem to get you intrested in the characters. I think the story was just 2 dry for my liking.
Spoiler****** Also I didn't get the part about the missing painting. There was no missing painting just the lady, so why did he think the painting wasnt there when the mirror was still there and the painting acting as the killers background. I dont know it just didn't set well with me because everything on the walls were still there. I thought the movie was so so but I liked "Suspiria" and "Opera" much better.

I loved Suspiria and am now proud to say that I own it. The best thing in this movie for me was the deaths. I mean what could be better than that phone cord in the beginning. Not much.
