War of The Worlds

Hi,

This is Marya your hostess for the supernatural.

I have a question regarding the comparison of two filmings of the same story.

The film is the War Of The Worlds.

I have copies of both the recent one starring Tom Cruise and the earlier 1953 version with Gene Barry & Ann Robinson.

While the special effects are excellent on the newer one and the acting is quite good by Cruise and cast, I still like the 1953 version best .

With almost 50 years difference between the two, I still find the special effects on the 1953 one outstanding, especially since they did not have the help of computers as modern fiilms do.

I also found the acting by Barry & Robinson very invigerating!

I would like to know your opinion on this?

Do you like the more modern version best or the older classic version?

I would like to see what other sci fi and horror buffs think.

Your hostess for the supernatural

hehe
I love War of the Worlds I find the original music to be the best.
I have seen the new film and loved it but I dont believe the films will ever do the story or the music justice. Sitting in a dark room listening to the story and music scared the hell outta me when I first heard it as a child.
I will have to watch the 1953 film have been on the look out for it.
The new film I do like, the special effects are great, and it captures the feeling well. The tripods are bloody amazing looking and over all a great film.
Though I still consider the music and story better, its freaky, creative and genius.
I believe when War of the Worlds was first broadcast on the radio people freaked out and thought there was an actual invasion. Just goes to show how well done it is.

As a kid, I preferred listening to the musical synth version while looking at the pictures. It's too bad the new film couldn't make the tripods look a bit more like THAT.

Oh, the 1953 version is a classic - the atmosphere and special fx are out of this world (excuse the pun!).

But I did like the modern version too - it still maintained that exciting and spooked feeling that I got when I first watched the original.

I think the modern one did the original justice.

And Jeff Wayne's Musical version leaves me with goosebumps to this day - it captured the same atmosphere as the original movie without the sights, just sound - brilliant!

Did anyone get to see the Wayne's live stage event? - I got the DVD and have yet to watch it :D
