sunshine - danny boyle

hi all..

sorry if this is a repost - the search button didn't want to seem to work for me

Anyway - i blagged a place at a press screening of this the other day....AND IT'S AWSOME.

I keep seeing people compare it to The Core etc...but it's nothing like that. Think alien crossed with the shining and you're more or less there...
Actually sprinkle some 28 days later in there too..

Anyone else seen this? Some seriously thought provoking stuff going on

trailer by the way

I had difficulty with the search at first also. I find if you right click search this thread then select open it will open a search at bottom of forum. Might work for you.

Also hell that trailer looks good. However from looking at the trailer it does seem more like an end of the world/save the world film rather than horror.

So you have seen it and you consider it horror?

ah yes - thanks for the search tip.

yes - as above i managed to blag a press screening (i'm a little bit werr...a little bit weee :D )

I would consider it horror as i would say alien is more horror than sci-fi. To be honest i think the 'save the world' premise is a bit incidental. The real meat of the story is in the mentalness that escalates with the crew (which is what made me think of the shining).

In that sense it;s similar to 28 days later for me.The end of that film, actually the whole premise to be honest, was incidental to the pressures on the characters.

in that sense it was a psychological horror for me, as is sunshine

Am i making any sense here at all?

sorry yes - i rushed that last post.

i can use 28 days as an example - The highlights of that film for me were things like:

1) Being completely alone in london - it's like that childhood fantasy of being able to freeze the world and being able to do whatever you want. where would you go

2) The towerblock scenario - How the hell you survive in that environment. What risk is worthwhile to take to escape it

3) the scene with the soldiers and the women - where it becomes obvious that they are prepared to be 'sub-human' towards these women to try and perpetuate the human race.

For me it's things like that that were the most gripping parts of the film, as opposed to guys with red eyes running around and eating people.

Sunshine is kind of the same - the decisions that the characters are forced to make, and what *I* would do in the same situation.
Spaceships, towerblocks etc...are all kind of beside the point in terms of what is actually interesting about the film..Which for me is the relationships between the people involved *as exacerbated by* their environment.

"Hell is other people" after all ;)

Am i confusing this further?

I like Danny Boyle's work so far,i like Cillian Murphy so i am looking forward to this, the trailer however doesn't set my world alight, trailers can be so misleading though but i will still go along and see this and hope for the best.

indeed - take a look at this that i stumbled across the other day

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gutk2iMYFTs

the original 1979 trailer for alien. Not exactly representative of the actual pace of the film

still looks damn good though :p

and no - the Sunshine trailer doesn't really illustrate the most interesting parts of the film...And actually i don;t think you could in a 90 second clip

That Alien trailer was pretty intense, very un-nerving and very effective.I guess the thing with trailers concerning movies set in space is that one can end up looking pretty much like another although the movies themselves are vastly different beasts. The Alien trailer concentrated on the tension&substance rather than painting a pretty picture, damn good stuff thanks for that.:)

Yes,looks great and the movie as a whole hasn't dated at all badly considering it was made 28 years ago.
