The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973)

As my interest of Dracula, and vampire movies in general, goes from large to obssesive, I've been seeing many different renditions of the classic novel.

I read the book, and I'm now trying to see a wide variety of Dracula films.

I love the Lugosi version (seen it 3 times in the last month, once with commentary) although it's far from the book, and I love the Coppolla version for it's closeness to Bram's original story.

This one, however, surprised me. I LOVED IT. I thought it was a very fun film, and its performances (Christopher Lee- forever a low-budget hero) and strange scenes easily entertained where its likeness to the book failed.

What are some of your opinions on this film?

I watched it awhile back and enjoyed it. Cant remember a whole lot of it, but I remember enjoying it. Perhaps I'll have to watch it again sometime soon.

BTW- What did you think of the commentary on Dracula '31?

Oh, hella interesting.

It's like listening to a history book on Dracula as you watch it. You get a short history on all the actors, Tod Browning, etc, and there's some crazy insightful stuff in there (listen for the bit about the cardboard against the lamp)

The most interesting thing to learn through it is how little control Browning had on the film. Dracula is kind of a compilation of all the actors/workers ideas. It's kind of crazy.

The historian who did the commentary got a little dry at times, but that's my only complaint.

If you haven't listened to it, although I'm sure you have, I highly recommend it.

Oh, Ive listened to it. To be honest, I didnt really think it was that great. He didnt really have much to say that I didnt already know, and his voice was monotone the whole way through. There were a few little things that I found interesting ,the lamp shade, for example, but overall it was more of a recap of what I already knew.

On a related note, did you watch the Road to Dracula documentary on the Legacy set? I thought that was very informative, going more into the past of the story. Unlike the commetary, I learned quite a bit.

Ah, no I have not. I planned to soon, but now that you've recommended it, I shall tonight or tomorrow.

I'll let you know what I think.
