Not to be nitpicky or anything, but the article says the bodies were staked so they WOULDN'T become vampires. So, they weren't vsmpires, and the title of the article is wrong.

Humm...but may be it need some further study & interpretation. It mostly says it was a preventative measure or practice to keep the dead from returning. Now, it may be a question whether those dead died as vampires or not. Anyway, it seems Bulgaria is a fine place to become a vampire. :)
