Twentieth Century Fox's monster battle gobbled up $38.3 million of the weekend's box office, while Walt Disney's fairy tale fantasy posted a three-day total of $23 million after bowing on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, younger tykes were enthralled by Warner Bros.' trading-card adaptation "Yu-Gi-Oh!," which took in $9.4 million from 2,411 venues.
The top two pics both overperformed. "Alien vs. Predator," which Fox says carried a $60 million pricetag, nudged past last year's $36.4 million opening for monster mash "Freddy vs. Jason," which also bowed in the second weekend of August.
"It's a great number," said Fox distributor head Bruce Snyder. "We couldn't be happier."
