Editor's Note: For this special exclusive with Shilo Wallace of Repo! The Genetic Opera fame, we resurrected a Teen Beat intern from its premiere 1965 issue. Enjoy.
Hey, flick fanatics! Have you heard about the bitchin' babe Shilo Wallace who's had a movie made about her life? No doubt you have: she's world-famous for liberating bedroom-bound teens everywhere, finking out the Largo Family empire and exposing them for the organ-bogarting phonies they are! Right on!
For this imaginary interview, my very first, I hopped in my Woody wagon and met her at a malt shop on the Two-Six. See what she spilled in our very own virtual slam book! And hold onto your suicide knobs, cuz slinky Shilo is one ginchy chick!
Q: What do you make of actress Alexa Vega being cast as you? Did you chicks work together on the role, or what?
Shilo Wallace: I think Alexa understood what Darren Bousman, the director, wanted her to do with the character… but I don't know how true it was to me. You know how they have to change things for movies, to suit the audiences. I think she did what she could with the circumstances. Alexa really wanted to be me. It was kind of cool actually, because growing up in a stupid little room, all you want to do is be other people.
But she wanted to know every little detail to really try and be as authentic as possible… it was uncomfortable sometimes, because we didn't know each other for very long when she started asking questions that were super-personal and probably not very important for the script. But it was cool; she seemed dedicated, which was a relief.
Q: I can dig that. So, there are rumors of the "Lost Diaries of Marni Wallace" being published; that's the lowdown from Luigi Largo, anyways… what's his bag?
Shilo: I don't know if there are diaries of my mother's. But if there are, I don't think its anyone else's business. Our family has given the world enough of our lives. Be at peace with that.
Look, I want to make this clear now: if you think I am going to give you any information that you don't already have you are very mistaken. I am a private person. Very private
Q: Cool it, sister. I'm just lip-flappin'. What's your relationship with the Largos now?
Shilo: Rotti? [the head of the Largo family] I think Rotti had a lot of hurt in his life and didn't know how to deal with it. I don't think he would have been a bad person if my mother didn't leave him. But I do forgive him, of everything.
Q: Do you and your first boyfriend, GraveRobber, keep in touch?
Shilo: I met GraveRobber the first time I ever snuck out of my home. It was fate. I was never seduced… always aware of my actions.
GraveRobber introduced me into the world and gave me knowledge I needed to enter this toxic waste of a town. I still visit him from time to time. But he is a traveling man with many flirtations, and I am but a girl figuring out what it's like being a woman.
Q: What was it like growing up so alone? How do you feel about your old man now?
Shilo: Wow! You are more nosey than Alexa Vega was.
Q: Like I said: I'm just lip-flappin'. Can I get you another banana split?
Shilo: No, thanks.
I mean… look, what's it like growing up with any parents? It's hard. You fight, but my father was lonely, and a difficult man to understand. We had a very different family dynamic. It was isolating and cold. But I forgive him.. He was trapped in his own loneliness but was drowning me with it.
I guess I did all I could... read, write, sing, fantasize about the world, scratch the record. Collect bugs, and weird things I would find by my mother's grave. Isolation is unfair and honestly, the only advice I can offer to others in my previous situation is: Get out. Run as far as you can in the other direction.
Q: Why is Blind Mag such a heartthrob for you?
Shilo: Mag sings and performs with her soul. People can find a connection with her. She is truly the light of our very dim world.
Q: She's no Jackie DeShannon, but I read ya. OK, so… Have you ever considered cosmetic tweaks, or an entire internal revamp? What are the kids calling it these days… plastic surgery?
Shilo: Sure — who doesn't think of the possibilities of looking different? But it has ripped apart who we truly are, and my family has taken the toll for that. Obviously, things are worse. What kind of question is that? Just because the readers want to know my real story doesn't mean they are stupid and live in a different world
Q: Cool it, sister. You need to amp down. Just a few more. Are you going with anyone? Are you in love now?
Shilo: I am still learning what real love.. I don't know if I ever truly understood 'typical' love.
Q: What inspires you nowadays?
Shilo: People. People and the world. The Largos inspire me. Because every day that goes by that I have to read about them in the papers, consuming our city with their selfish requests and parties. It inspires me to try and give the world something different and unique. Opportunities they don't have now.
Q: Where do you see yourself, ideally, 5 years from now?
Shilo: In the shadows… with my brother.
Q: Hey! I was told you're an only child!
Shilo: [is gone]
