From Australia:
Doe sit bug you if someone from another country calls you an "Aussie"? - Doe Sit?? HAHA... Not really...I mean, I think we're the ones that first started using that phrase anyway. "Australian" sounds a little uppity if you ask me. One thing that DOES bother me is the accent in which Americans say it. Like "ousies" and really pronounce the "au" a little too much, so that they almost say "Orstralia", It's more like "Ozzy" And "Osstralia"...the "au" bit is spoken quickly. If you were to pronounce it phonetically... Do you ever actually use the term "Down under"? - If you're a tourist, that kinda thing seems to appeal, no doubt someone trying to sell you something would lay it on thick. Here, no, we don't. Doe sit bother you that America thinks everyone in your country is a clone of Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee? Or do you even care what we think? - It bothers me that nothing is really being done to CORRECT this. It's all to do with the tourism bit though, nowadays at least...that, and American made "Australian" films that typecast. Nature chasnnels would have us believe that Australia is swarming with snakes and spiders that will kill you in minutes. Are Funnel webs, redbacks, sea wasps, blue ringed octopuses and all those wonderful snakes really THAT big a problem? - We DO have a lot of spiders here, yes. Funnel webs are not big in anything but rural areas with plentiful trees. Snakes are in the more "country" areas too. If you are living in these areas, you grow up learning the precautions eg: check under beds, upturn shoes before you put them on, check under outdoor toilet seats...etc, wear gloves and boots when doing certain types of hands-on work. They're not much of a problem, if you are bought up in the country, you know these things. The horror stories are mainly to hammer this kind of caution into the heads of little ones, however, these things HAVE happened. Vaccines are available for most of these things, and most people living in these areas will stock a supply at home/in vehicles. There are only funnel webs, brown snakes, and red/yellow belly black snakes that are a cause for MAJOR concern, and if they bite you, you will likely die if it's not taken care of. All of these creatures also inflict notoriously painful stings/bites. Red backs HAVE killed, but are more of a problem in that they HIDE in places humans dwell...they're quite poisonous, but not nearly as much as the three abovementioned creatures. Sea wasps can't be that big a thing, as I've never seen one. I don't know too much about blue ringed octopi...I mean, I know not to touch them as they have a VERY potent and fast acting poison, but incidences of this actually happening are pretty minimal...mainly among small children that have touched them in rock-pools and whatnot, they're quite attractive. Up towards the north-east (qld) we have a rather dangerous species known as the box jellyfish...aka the portuguese man-o-war in other parts of the world? There's a lot of those up there...I know little of them other than they have insanely long tentacles which can wrap around you and deliver multiple stings. Apparently a lot of people have drowned, as they close your airways. In urbanised areas, these poisonous species are not a big problem. We have rather large spiders, but they either don't attack and stay outside, or the ones that sometimes venture inside (huntsman) are not very poisonous, and rather scared of confrontation. Also, just thought I'd throw this in: Koalas and kangaroos do not roam our streets. We do not keep them as pets. They are unfriendly, smelly creatures that keep to themselves, and are more abundant where we are not. Koalas are stoned a lot of the time, as eucalyptus leaves contain a chemical that sedates...no, humans don't smoke it or anything, it's poisonous. The koalas have some kinda defense mechanism going on that enables to eat them. We actually eat kangaroo here, it's quite good, and allegedly has less than 2% body fat - I buy it as my preferred red meat due to this. Another thing, there is also a problemati overabundance of them in certain areas, to the point that certain places actually send out culling squads to exterminate them in a calculated way. Not nice, but true. - B. |
