There is only one movie that pisses me off enough to list:

Blair Witch!

Any asshole could've made that film. However, props to their marketing efforts which made an asshole out of me, by making me think it was actually gonna be a good/scary movie.

I will give them all the props deserved for the Blair Witch Project. The movie wasn't that great, but they figured out a way to make a super-low budget movie (like Clerks low, around $35,000) and make it and market it in a way that would get tons of money (It earned around $29,172,381 in it's opening weekend alone, all profit, it earned $140,495,114 total domestic, all of it profit)

So if nothing else, they deserve credit for making a low-budget movie that made assloads of money

i agree .. i didnt like Blair Witch but it has my admiration.
Not that it was the first of its kind .. other backyard films of various quality have been popping up since the VCR became a household item, but Blair Witch for some luck of timing - became a media darling.
This made and broke the film ...
Through the uber-hyping of the media and some word of mouth people felt compelled to flock to the theatre to see it - as sheep will do...
The thing is that 90% of movie goers want easily accessable films - car chases, things getting blown up, high gloss .. and Blair Witch wasnt about that.
And then there is the percentage of people who dont expect such things and still might not like the film for their own reasons (like myself and our friend Haphazard.

So it kind of blew up on itself ...

I think the film is effective in many ways . it managed to generate tension without showing anything.
The film was clever to a point.
(they lost me when they started running around the abandoned house .. at this point it became very obvious that it was a 'student film' and they found a cool abandoned house and thought it would be a good location so they ran around it with the camera .... until that point i had forgotten it was a low budget film and was absorbed by the characters fears and anxieties.)

Anyway ... Like I said .. effective in parts .. especially when you consider what they were working with.
I'll put it up against Resident Evil 2 anyday. (not that thats saying much)

Very well stated. I agree on all accounts.

I wrote this a long time ago in another thread, but I'll tell this story again:
One of my good friends's brother submitted a film to Sundance. While at the festival, and before the premiere of Blair Witch, a lot of buzz was around about a film that was being submitted but was actually found footage from a student film expedition into the woods in search of a so-called "rural legend." He bought a copy on VHS from the filmmakers who were selling copies on the street for about $20 and sent it to my friend Matt... under the assumption that the whole thing was real.
Matt called all of his friends to his house for a meeting. He told us the story and showed us the movie (which was different from the theatrical release). We all got extremely freaked out... but kind of excited too. Needless to say, under those circumstances, I loved the Blair Witch Project but when I found out we had been hornswaggled, I was disappointed (but my friends and I had a good laugh about it). It didn't make me hate the movie though, it made me appreciate marketing and its capabilities.
