Use Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy, and CCleaner. Restart your computer and press F8 and enter safe mode.Once at the menue screen IGNOR Administrator but load up your regular profile.
Use CCleaner first following all the actions.
Scan with both one after the other. But make sure they are all updated first.

They are all free.

Hope this helps.

Also its a good idea to also have Comodo firewall(free) and Avast antivirus(free).

Amazing how the most popular and expensive antivirus programs (Norton and McAffee) regularly come out close to the bottom of the list when rated. Goddamn used car salesmen is what they are.

microsoft did even worse

ad-aware
spybot - search & destroy

should get rid of your adware/spyware

get yourself a decent firewall, AV.

if you ever go to a web page and it says you have spyware - scan here. don't click it - you'll just re-infect your pc.

and most importantly - don't use IE

for ones that cost money,
Stopzilla is the best by far.
it puts a little minimizable window in the lower right corner of your screen. everytime any type of virus is introduced to your computer, it shows up in the window. from there you can delete it.

I've been scanning with a lot of these different programs over the last few days, it's getting better, but something is slowing it down big time...

There are many different factors on why your PC has slowed down.

How many items do you have running on taskbar?
How many shortcuts on desktop?
How many processes are running? -CTRL/ALT/DEL.
How much memory do you have? more the better.
Do you have a desktop wallpaper.

Have you cleaned out the crap from your registory? >Make a restore point first.
Have a look at this link it could help you.

Do you have all of your correct drivers installed?

All in no particular order.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
