I'm know I'm jaded so I don't know that there are any "scary" movies. However, there are "Jump" scenes in lots of movies that get me although a lot of times it's the loud jump in volume that helps contribute to that.

When I was 8 years old "Jaws" was pretty scary but it was also realistic, you could easily be eaten by a shark. Being chased by a guy in a hockey mask and a machete who can't be killed was pretty unlikely though.

There are other movies I find "Creepy". I saw the movie "Witchboard" as a kid and I just watched it again for the 1st time in probably 20 years and it has a pretty creepy atmosphere to it. "The Exorcist" had a creepy atmosphere. There was a movie that came out a few years back called "Darkness" and I thought that had a pretty creepy atmosphere too. You don't know what's in the dark...it's fear of the unknown.

There isn't really anything in Cinema though as an adult that scares me. No movie gives me nightmares. Only things that happen to me in real life can have that kind of effect on me.

The older you get the harder it is to get scared. I find myself mainly going to the movies if im looking for a good jump. watching horror movies from home just doesnt do it for me anymore. Although i must admit the last movie that i saw that gave me quite a few chills and jumps was Insidious.

I think that's all you can hope for these days, a spine tingler. As adults we'll never be affected in the same way as were, watching The Exorcist at 13 years old.

The only way to be unsettled by cinema these days, is through extreme cinema. And fuck that! I tried watching AUM and turned it off after 15 mins, and I believe there is much worse on the market.
I can agree on The Exorcist, TCM, and Suspiria in my top ten list. Exorcist III did have some pretty creepy parts and Brad Dourif as The Gemini Killer was excellent but I have to leave it out of my top ten. As far as my other choices for top ten favs, they would have to be: Halloween (original), The Ring, The Blair Witch Project, Silent Hill, In the Mouth of Madness, The Haunting (original black & white version), and Cabin Fever.

Yeah, The Descent is great. Really does a phenomenal job of building and maintaining extreme tension.
