tough choice. Three good performances...
Detective David Mills (Se7en) is my vote. He did a fantastic job in creating a very real character with depth, complete with unique voice inflections and patterns (very impressive), and quirks, and conveyed a character that subtly changed through the film. Interestingly, of the three Oscar winning actors in this film (Spacey, Paltrow, Freeman), I thought Pitt did the best performance, and definitely one of his best. Bette Davis nailed another excellent performance. She'd be my 2nd place.

Tough choice between Sally and Mills, but I will go with Detective David Mills. Unfortunately, I have not seen Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, but I will note that I enjoyed Bette Davis's performance in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. That film (Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte) is on my list to watch though.
