Heh heh!

Citizen Kane would just sooooo kick Scream's arse if the original film reels had fists and legs and were sentient things.

2001 just didn't appeal to me. I even liked hitchhikers guide to the galaxy more.

Ok, but what didn't appeal in 2001?

The depiction of the beginning of man? (Bah! Mere actors in monkeysuits!)

The slow, plodding mid-section? (The stunning cinematography and intense exchanges between the crew and HAL aren't always noted)

The ambiguous, surreal destination? (Where? Who? What?)

Or all the flashy lights? (Seriously, because the final reel is where some viewers get out and decide the film and Kubrick are now taking the piss).

even as a teenager i had respect and love for classic films and appreciated the fact that although the effects may be a bit dated thanks to the latest technological advancement - that they were still amazing works of art.

most kids today cant get their head around the fact that things happened before they were born.

I'm not sure if the fairly recent DVD re-issue was subject to any CGI twiddling - probably not, though with Kubrick no longer around the screen was probably tidied up with some of the old ultra-remastering.

Nevertheless, the special effects are fundamentally awesome - so clearly inspirational to today's science-fiction. And when the brilliantly provocative music isn't blaring, the silence of space really gives a sense of wonder and... size: of the spaceships, of space, and of the big question.

Possibly the only thing that could make 2001 even more a mysterious, ahead-of-its-time masterpiece would be if it was created a few years earlier - in black & white....

it was definately one of the main stepping stones in modern affects.

i dont know what would be considered the main one before that .. but taking up with 2001 on i see it as

2001
star wars
abyss/terminator 2

as far as major speciall effects advancements go.

(i know a lot of subtle things are in between those to make the big ones possible.

and yeah ... the big question ...
thats another reason it gets lost on the majority .. everything isnt spelled out for everyone at the end .

but the worst possible affront to todays sensibilities :

not one big titted blond with a gang of horny teenage kids (each one representing a seperate major stereotype) trying to fuck her was onscreen at all in this film.
