Dweebadweeba -

Not exactly groundbreaking news indeed - more a reminder of how such flimsy, insignificant entertainment remains so popular with the masses.

To not grow out of wrestling is strange, as one would expect your forms of entertainment to mature with the rest of you.

Over it?

When you watch a movie everything is fake, a bunch of people acting as if their doing something they aren't. Acting like good guys, bad guys, military officers, singers, police officers, gangsters ect. ect. The point of watching a movie which again is completely fake is to see how the story comes out. Wrestling's no different, you're watching a bunch of people acting like good guys and bad guys as the story unfolds. Also just like movies it can be predictable and boring, original and suspenseful, funny ect. It's just a form of entertainment which in my opinion isn't all that different from watching a movie or any other tv show for that matter.

Another good point, Austin.

While it is easy to suspend disbelief in film though, watching a movie is a more obvious, accepted form of deception - and most of them do not pretend to be "authentic".

It is interesting how more actual, competitive wrestling in Ultimate Fighting and the like lies at the other end of the spectrum since it is considered "extreme".

Where is the middle ground?

Surely a hands-on, grab-and-throw skill like wrestling can be sold to the public as a straight sport, minus the need for patronising pre-determined pantomime acts or unrestrained extremities?

Punch and Judy, now I can just about cope with that.

I think wrestling is just as much of an accepted form of deception as film, they don't advertise it as being real which is more than I can say for alot of films who are quick to slap on a ''true story'' sticker. There's even a saying in wrestling, ''This aint ballet'' which is often used by the announcers which any frequent viewer can easily translate. As far as younger fans just like with movies it's the parent's job if they see fit to explain to the kid that it's not real and not to try anything they see. So as far as the deception you keep mentioning, like I've said already it's just like movies imo, if you're old/mature enough you'll realize it's fake, if you're a young fan it's up to the parents if they see fit to explain. So again I say it's just like movies or any other tv show.

I'm an old wrestling fan from way back (anyone remember tommy "wildfire" rich)? Or perhaps you can remember who the original satanist in wrestling was?

anyway, having met and chatted with several pro-wrestlers and seen the injuries and watched them walk and get up out of chairs believe me wrestlers are athletes who get hurt.

just because it's scripted doe not mean that it's "fake". I stopped watching wrestling when it stopped being about good versus evil, now it's degrees of popularity and who can be bad without being unpopular.

Remember when it was Ivan Koloff versus Ole Anderson or austin idol versus rick flair. Remember when buck "rock-n-roll" zumhoff was warring with bobby hennan? It was good versus bad; a titanic clear cut struggle. I was about the plot and story line; it was about booing for the bad guy and loving it when the good guy finally won -- it was melodrama object lessons.

Now, it's just like any other soap opera, only the sex happens in the ring and not in the bedroom.

Wrestlers are tough folks and extreme athletes(although I could never figure out how dusty rhodes never had a heart attack as huge as he was) and regardless of scripted or unscripted the good ones do deserve some respect.
