When I wake up, not GET UP, just WAKE up...I spend maybe 30 minutes to an hour lying in various positions - none of them really quite comfortable enough to get back to sleep, and when I finally decide I really need to take a piss, I get up and do so...I mean, after a walk to the bathroom.
I always wake up feeling pretty congested due do my slightly deviated septum, my mouth gets very dry and my nose is usually blocked on one side...I brush my teeth than I usually have a hot drink, tea or coffee which fixes the congestion up somewhat, and I sit in front of the pc, sometimes posting, sometimes playing runescape, sometimes playing emulated games while drinking my drink.
I'll usually play music on the pc or watch the news while doing this. Within a couple of hours, I'll yknow do whatever household shit needs doing, have a shower...at the moment I'm not working or studying til later in the year, so throughout the rest of the day, I might do some cooking (which I love), some sets of weights when I feel like it, take a long walk and a bike ride...trying to be a bit more active for my own good health..., watch some movies, play games, hang out, occasionally get stoned, water my plants, feed the animals, spend a little time with them here and there and just....do nothing.
Eat intermittantly, stay up late...that's about it.
I mean sure, I DO go out, and do shopping occasionally...
That's pretty much it.

Is there anything that you can do about your nose getting blocked of a night? Waking up each morning with a dry mouth because of a partially blocked nose would send me crazy.

A little while ago I was living with my mother and had a cold\flu and was going to use a nasal spray before bed to clear my nose. But I had ran out. The panic that overtook me was weird. I HAD to get nasal spray and spent the next 40 minutes driving from service station to service station trying to find some so I could sleep easy and sleep well.

Yes, there is something I can do...have a septoplasty. Vod will be able to explain that wonderful process to you, I believe he's had it done.
Nasal sprays are usually in three groups, the decongestant, the "kinda" steriod based ones, and the saline solution ones.

The decongestants (such as vicks) are usually over the counter ones, and should only be used very short term (eg: 3-4 days), for colds...etc, as prolonged use can lead to dependance, and eventually it loses it's effect allgtogether, I've had this happen, and it took about 2 months to correct itself.

The ones with steroid type ingredients take a while to start working, and can be used for slightly longer periods. They basically "shrink" the inside of your nasal canal, making the passage "clearer"...prolonged (4 weeks plus) use can lead to nosebleeds, and a feeling of soreness and tightness/pressure around the nose. Sure, you breathe clearly, but it's annoying. I prefer using this to the standard decongestant. Most are script only, but there is a good one that's quite mild available over the counter called ?rhinocort?...
All the same, it's annoying as you can only use it every so often, and not for a great period of time.

The saline solution ones are just that - saltwater, more or less...they work incredibly for some people, kind of like when you swim at the beach and all kindsa junk pours outta your nose? I think that's the idea. However, the seawater does it a lot better, in my case, these sprays do not work.

I find chemists own brands of cold and flu tablets work very well if taken regularly, but then tend to keep you awake, as most of them contain slightly larger amounts of ephedrine/pseudoephedrine (!ZING!) than the "off the shelf" stuff...I've actually found they help me concentrate, but that's because I have strange chemistry going on...so be warned, they DO keep you awake..,

I've had a friend who had a septoplasty that claims he's never had a breathing problem since...so, it looks like that will be the eventual outcome for me...

Gee, it seems that there are relatively few chemical options for such an anoying condition. I suppose your sinuses are quite a sensitive part of the body that can only be treated for so long with decongestants before the delicate balance tips and you nasal passages become too dry or congested again.

Well I hope you don't have to wait too long to get the septoplasty done.

Btw - gotta love that pseudoephedrine zing! lol.

i have the mornings of a drunk ... without the benifit of drinking ..
I wake up every day with a hangover .. so it seems.

A bad headache, aching joints ...

I dont get enough sleep which is probably the problem.

So .. i get up before the alarm .. go downstairs and have cereal while reading. Then i come here to take a fast peak at whatever madness ensued from the night before.
Then I shower, hang out with my kid, get him ready, drive him to daycare and get my ass to work.

this is my only ritualistic thing.. (the cereal/reading)

Reading a book on Paul Verhoeven right now - its pretty interesting.

Crap!!! A headache each morning?!? Do you drink enough water?? I have heard headaches are a sign of dehydration. Do you drink alot of caffeine? Is that why you can't sleep?

Can I ask more questions?

Anyway- I don't have a sleep patern at the moment (well, for the last year). I have to sleep when I can get sleep and that was alot this weekend. I just finished a 7am to 3pm shift on Friday and will be starting an 11pm to 7am shift tomorrow night. There seems to be no flow to our roster this cycle. I will do the 11-7am shift for a week, have the weekend to recover and then I will be on a different shift. It sucks!!

i probably dont drink enough water .. i try to but i forget ..
I dont take in any caffeine that i know of .. i dont drink coffee or tea and if we drink pop its caffeine free...
If i get it in any other way it'll be trace amounts ..

I just cant stay in bed for more than 6 hours .. my back starts to bug me ..

re. shiftwork .. i did it for about 10 years ...
some guys seem to adapt to it .. but its really hard on you ... our genetic code tells us to be up in the day - sleep at night .. this is what our eyes are made for.
shiftwork flies in the face of what we are and i think it takes years off of our lives.

i could never sleep worth a damn in the day .. i needed 100% darkness and no noise ... I would use a big floor fan to provide white noise... even in winter

for a long time i did what you did .. the swing shift .. days, then afternoons, then evenings.
It almost killed me
