I'm beginning to wonder how some people can label other people as 'Goth'...When it doesn't seem that anyone REALLY knows what the term means......

According to what I've seen...'Goth' could mean pretty much ANYTHING that isn't Tommy Hilfiger, Penny Loafers, Mini Vans, and Brittany Spears......Hmmm...

i think its pretty fair to say that there is a 'goth' style and a 'goth' person.(not neccessarily the same thing at all) and yes the style is fairly loose .. its not definable but there is a certain flavor...

its easy to get dragged into the whole 'labeling people because of how they look' but its pretty damn hard to deny that people do dress to make a statement -when they can.

You're damn right that there is a yuppie dresscode .. there is a certain shoe, a certain type of coat, a certain range of acceptable hairstyles..

'rockers' have a look, punks have a look, (using the obvious music examples)

Jocks, clubbers, shit - pretty much everyone wants to identify with something ...and they do it largely through dress.

it doesnt mean that they all fall neatly into some niche where they have to listen to this or that - but there is a very concious fashion decision based on how that person wants to project themselves- for just about everyone..

Goth is no different .. there are self proclaimed 'goth shops' (for the rich goths) there are goth bars ... (i've been to them, and not being dressed goth i stood out like a sore thumb)

I can totally agree that because you like a romantic retro fashion, or a lot of black leather and dark lipstick - it doesnt mean you sit in your basement listening to Nick Cave contemplating suicide all day ... but there is a 'goth look' as far as fashion goes ..

not saying its good or bad ..

but i still like to tease :D

call me dumb, but I see goth as more of a fetish than a fashion.

everything else is just a uniform

You should have said "Jesus.... you people are freaks" and walked out. It just strikes me as a funny thing to do. :D

So how long were you at this goth bar? a whole night or was it like an in-and-out type deal?

it was a dance bar .. all night - and i was there more than once (the Dance Cave - oddly enough)

it was several years back .. i used to like a lot of the music at the time ..plus they played other 'fringe' styles of music.

My friends were all in bands at the time so we all just hung at the same places ..

i should add that i am completely devoid of style from day to day ...
since i was old enough to ask for what i wanted i pretty much have been wearing jeans and black tshirts and high top converse .. i can show you pics of me as a little kid in the same thing i'm in now.

doesnt matter whats on the tshirt either .. it could be a cool band, an uncool band, a moving compan - i dont give a shit - i buy everything at a thrift store and the only criteria i have is that it fits.

i hate to think about clothes .. i just grab what ever is on the top of the pile.

Meh...I never needed to 'identify' with anyone or anything...I'm pretty happy just being me...all by myself......And so that's why I wear what I like, listen to whatever music makes me move (pretty much ANYTHING with wicked, kickass guitars)....And go wherever I feel like going....

So...Basically...

I do what I want........................HEY!!!...I'm not goth...I'm ERIC CARTMAN!!!! :D
